Chapter 2

I walked home in the dark.

The temple was only a quarter mile from the house we shared, a path I'd taken a hundred times. Tonight it felt like walking through water. My feet moved. My lungs pulled in air. My face, when I caught my reflection in the darkened shop window on the corner, looked perfectly composed.

I didn't recognize the woman looking back at me.

Ryker was already in the kitchen when I came through the door, standing at the stove with a dish towel over his shoulder, stirring something that smelled like the herbed broth he always made after the rites. He said it helped my body absorb the ceremony. I'd thought that was tenderness.

He turned when he heard me, and his face did the thing it always did—that slow, warm opening, like watching a door ease wide.

"How do you feel?" He crossed to me and pressed the back of his hand to my cheek. Checking my temperature. Caring. "The elder said you left a little early."

"I felt fine," I said. "I just wanted to come home."

The lie came out smooth and easy, and I hated how simple it was. How many lies had I told myself in three years that had given me this practice?

"Sit." He guided me to the kitchen chair with a hand at my lower back. "You need to eat."

I sat. I ate. I smiled when he asked if the broth was too hot.

The whole time, I was somewhere else entirely, standing behind that curtain, watching the light die in a tiny ultrasound image that was supposed to be my child.

---

After dinner, he gave me the necklace.

He pulled it from his jacket pocket like it was an afterthought, a small velvet box that he set beside my empty bowl with a quiet smile. "I saw it and thought of you."

Inside was a gold chain with a teardrop pendant, a pale blue stone set in a simple claw setting. Delicate. Pretty. The kind of thing I would have pressed to my chest two weeks ago and told myself meant something.

I recognized it immediately.

Not the exact piece—but the design. The pale blue stone. The same jeweler's mark stamped inside the box lid. I'd seen it before, in Victoria's bedroom, on the night I'd made the mistake of stopping by to drop off a birthday gift. She'd been out. I'd left it on her dresser and noticed the necklace coiled in a dish near her mirror, catching the light.

I'd thought it was pretty then.

"Thank you," I said. I fastened it around my neck myself, because I didn't want his hands there. "It's beautiful."

His smile deepened. "It suits you."

I excused myself to bed early, claiming fatigue from the rite. He kissed my forehead and told me to rest. The door clicked shut behind him, and I lay in the dark with my hand flat against my stomach and the necklace cold against my throat, and I did not cry.

There was nothing left in me that wanted to cry.

---

I heard his voice just past midnight.

Low, careful, the way he always spoke on calls he didn't want me to hear—not quite a whisper, but pitched below the range that would carry through walls. He'd forgotten, or stopped caring, that I'd always been a light sleeper.

I eased out of bed without making a sound and moved to the door, pressing my ear to the crack I'd left open.

"Two months," he was saying. "Once the child is born, I'll tell her it didn't survive. She'll be devastated—she'll need time. That's normal. Expected."

A pause. Someone speaking on the other end.

"Then we bring Victoria home." His voice was steady. Certain. Like he was reading from a plan he'd already memorized. "The child will be raised as my heir. No one outside the inner circle needs to know the details."

Another pause, longer this time.

"Ivy?" A short breath, almost a laugh. "She'll grieve. I'll be here for her. That's the least I can do—she gave us everything we needed, even if she didn't know it. I owe her that much. She'll spend the rest of her life thinking she had a husband who loved her through the worst thing imaginable."

I pressed my back against the wall beside the door and stared at the ceiling.

The least he could do.

I owe her that much.

Three years. Every careful kindness. Every patient word. Even his proposal—stepping forward at my ruined wedding, taking my hand in front of the whole pack, looking at me like I was worth something. All of it, every single piece of it, had been architecture. A structure built to keep me standing in place long enough to be useful.

I thought about Marcus. My supposed fated mate, the man I'd been ready to bind my life to, caught with Victoria on what should have been the happiest morning of my life. I'd spent years quietly grateful that Ryker had been there to catch me when that fell apart.

Now I understood.

Ryker had known. He'd known because he'd arranged it. Marcus had been a tool, a crowbar to pry me loose from whatever future I might have built on my own, to leave me exactly vulnerable enough to accept what Ryker was offering. And Victoria—Victoria with her weak wolf blood, her beautiful face, her inability to carry a strong Alpha heir—had needed something only I could provide.

Me. My blood. Whatever was in me that I still didn't fully understand.

I waited until his voice stopped. Until I heard the soft click of his study door.

Then I went back to bed, picked up my phone, and opened the message thread I'd started three hours ago.

The woman from the temple. The one with the silver crescent moon on her cloak and twenty-five years of something desperate in her eyes. She'd pressed a card into my hand before I'd left, her fingers gripping mine for just a moment too long.

I typed four words.

*Tomorrow. Tell me where.*

The reply came in under a minute, like she'd been waiting with the phone in her hand.

A coffee shop address. Ten in the morning. *Come alone.*

I set the phone face-down on the nightstand and closed my eyes.

I was not going to lie here and wait to become a footnote in Ryker's story. I was not going to grieve a child they'd already decided to take from me, perform the grief he'd planned for, and spend the rest of my life being the woman he'd been so generous to stay with.

I didn't know yet what I was. But I knew what I wasn't.

I wasn't done.

---

The coffee shop was small and warm, tucked between a dry cleaner and a bookstore on a street I'd never had reason to visit. She was already there when I arrived, sitting in the back corner with two cups on the table and a manila envelope in front of her that she kept her hand flat on, like she was afraid it might try to leave.

I sat down across from her.

She slid the envelope toward me without preamble.

Inside was a DNA report—technical, dense, stamped with a lab seal I didn't recognize—and beneath it, a photograph. Old. The edges slightly soft, the colors faded the way photographs from twenty-five years ago go faded.

A couple. Standing in front of a stone manor house, the Silver Moon Pack crest carved above the door behind them. The man was tall, broad-shouldered, with the kind of face that looked like it had been built for authority. The woman beside him was laughing at something just off-camera, her head tilted back, her dark hair loose around her shoulders.

Her eyes.

I knew those eyes. I'd seen them every morning in the mirror for twenty-eight years.

"The Silver Moon Alpha pair," the woman said quietly. "Killed in an ambush twenty-five years ago. Their child was never found." She looked at me across the table, and her voice didn't waver, but her hand was shaking where it rested on the envelope. "Until now."

I set the photograph down.

"I'm an Omega," I said. The words felt strange in my mouth. Hollow. Like a costume I'd been wearing so long I'd forgotten it wasn't my skin.

"No." She shook her head slowly. "You're not. You never were." She tapped the DNA report. "The bloodwork doesn't lie. And the mark on your neck—" Her jaw tightened. "That's a suppression seal. Old magic. The kind that takes significant power to place on an infant and significant motivation to do it."

The candle on the table between us guttered in a draft from the door.

"Blackmoor Pack," she said. "They sealed you. They hid you. And then, when the seal had done its work long enough—" She stopped. Pressed her lips together. "They found you again and put you exactly where they needed you."

"You're not an Omega," she said. "You're a pure-blood Alpha. The last of your line."

The photograph stared up at me from the table.

My mother's eyes. Laughing. Alive.

I picked up the coffee cup and wrapped both hands around it, just to have something solid to hold.

"Tell me everything," I said.
