Chapter 2

The joint training exercise was Jenna's idea.

She announced it at the pack council meeting two weeks after the banquet, her voice warm and inclusive, her hand resting lightly on Carter's arm. A show of alliance strength, she called it. A preview of the unity the mating ceremony would bring. The Silvercrest and Ironveil warriors would train together in the mountains east of Seattle — field medicine, tactical formations, emergency triage under pressure.

Carter agreed without hesitation. Elina nodded her approval from across the table. I stood in the corner with the other Omegas, refilling water glasses, and watched Jenna's smile never touch her eyes.

I knew.

I did not know what, exactly. But I knew the way a rabbit knows when the wind changes direction. Something was coming.

---

The training camp was set up in a clearing ringed by Douglas firs, the ground still soft from recent rain. Tents in neat rows. Supply stations marked with flags. The Silvercrest warriors arrived in two vans, their uniforms pressed, their auras carefully neutral. Jenna stepped out first, white jacket, hair pulled back, every inch the future Luna overseeing her people.

I was assigned to the medical supply tent. Not as a healer — I had no rank to practice — but as labor. Hauling crates. Organizing bandages. Restocking the field kits under the supervision of a Silvercrest healer who did not speak to me directly but issued instructions to the air six inches to my left.

I worked fast. I kept my head down. I counted the wolfsbane vials twice — once when I unpacked them, once when I locked them in the secured cabinet. Fourteen vials. I wrote it in the log. I initialed it. I checked the lock.

Jenna came through the tent at noon, inspecting stations with a clipboard and a practiced smile. She paused at my table.

"Everything in order, Leia?"

"Yes."

She glanced at the cabinet. At the log. At me.

"Good," she said softly. "We wouldn't want any accidents."

She walked out. I stood there with my hands on the table and felt the wolf inside me go absolutely still.

---

The poisoning happened during the afternoon field triage drill.

A Silvercrest warrior — young, maybe twenty-two, named Evan — collapsed mid-run with convulsions. His squad carried him to the medical tent. The supervising healer cut open his field dressing and the scent hit us all at once: wolfsbane, acrid and unmistakable, soaked into the gauze that had been pressed against a simulated wound on his thigh.

The healer's hands moved fast. Charcoal suspension. Neutralizing agent. Evan's wolf was strong; he would survive. But the tent filled with people — warriors, officials, Carter and Jenna arriving together from the command post.

Jenna's voice cut through the noise.

"Check the supplies."

The Silvercrest healer opened the secured cabinet. Counted the vials. Thirteen.

Jenna turned to me.

"You restocked the field kits this morning."

It was not a question.

"Yes," I said.

"Alone?"

"Yes."

She reached into her jacket pocket. She pulled out a small glass capsule, half-empty, sealed with a rubber stopper. She held it up.

"I found this," she said, "in the bottom of your healer's kit during my inspection. Wolfsbane concentrate. The same chemical signature as what poisoned Evan."

The tent went silent.

I looked at the capsule. I looked at Jenna. I did not look at Carter.

"That is not mine," I said.

Jenna's expression was perfect — shock, reluctance, the face of someone who does not want to believe what the evidence is showing her.

"Leia," she said gently. "You were the only person with access to both the wolfsbane cabinet and the field kits. The log shows a missing vial. This capsule was in your personal kit."

"It was not in my kit this morning."

"Are you calling me a liar?"

I met her eyes.

"I am saying that capsule was not in my kit."

Carter stepped forward. His aura filled the tent, and I felt the bond pull at the base of my spine, a reflex I could not stop.

"Leia," he said. His voice was measured. Reasonable. "If this is a mistake — if you took the vial for some other purpose and forgot to log it — now is the time to say so."

I looked at him then. At the man who had marked me in secret. Who had reopened that mark dozens of times. Who had stood beside Jenna at the banquet and called her his intended Luna while the bond burned in my chest.

He was giving me an exit. A small lie. A confession that would make this go away.

I did not take it.

"I did not take the vial," I said. "I did not poison anyone. That capsule was planted."

Jenna's face went cold.

"Planted," she repeated. "By whom?"

I did not answer. I could not prove it. We both knew that.

Carter looked at me for a long moment. The bond ached, a dull pressure behind my ribs. Then he turned to the assembled warriors — Ironveil and Silvercrest both.

"Leia Cooper is stripped of healer rank, effective immediately," he said. "Her kit will be confiscated and examined. She is reassigned to manual Omega labor for the remainder of the training exercise."

A Silvercrest warrior stepped forward and took my kit from the table. The leather bag I had carried for six years. The instruments I had cleaned and sharpened and used to heal people who would not look at me now.

Jenna watched. Her hand rested lightly on Carter's back.

I stood in the center of the tent in my grey shift and received the demotion without a word. My hands stayed loose at my sides. My breathing stayed even.

And inside my chest, my wolf did not shrink.

It went very, very still.

The way a predator goes still when it has just identified the throat.
