Chapter 2

The pack house doors closed behind me with a sound like a period at the end of a sentence I hadn't finished writing.

I walked through the main hall. My boots left wet prints on the polished wood—evidence of the overnight kneeling Grayson had ordered, the freezing rain that had soaked through my clothes while Paige watched from a warm window. No one spoke to me. The few wolves in the hall at this early hour looked away as I passed, their discomfort palpable in the air.

I climbed the stairs to my room. Each step sent a fresh jolt through my cracked ribs. I counted them anyway. Thirty-two steps. I'd walked them thousands of times.

I would walk them four more days.

My room was small, tucked in the east wing where unmated warriors lived. I closed the door. Locked it. Stripped off my soaked clothes with mechanical efficiency and let them fall in a heap on the floor.

The mirror showed me what I already knew: new bruises blooming across my ribs in shades of purple and yellow, the silver burns on my wrists still raw and weeping, and older scars layered beneath—a topographic map of five years spent as Grayson's shadow.

I cataloged the damage with clinical detachment. Ribs: cracked but not broken through. Wrists: second-degree burns, healing slowly without proper treatment. Hypothermia: mild, manageable. I pressed my fingers to my pulse point. Steady. My wolf stirred inside me, awake and furious, pushing warmth through our shared body with deliberate force.

*Four more days,* I whispered.

She didn't argue.

I pulled on dry clothes from the drawer—plain, functional, the kind of outfit that didn't draw attention. As I bent to retrieve my discarded boots, I saw it: a folded piece of fabric tucked under my door, and beside it, a small sealed packet.

I opened the door. The hallway was empty.

The fabric was a clean undershirt, soft and worn. The packet contained dried herbs—feverfew, willow bark, something else I didn't recognize but could smell the healing properties of. No note. No name.

But I knew.

Daya. An Omega who worked in the pack house kitchens, a she-wolf with kind eyes who had watched me survive five years of this and never once looked away. She had no power to stop what happened to me. But she had this.

I pressed the shirt to my face and breathed in the scent of laundry soap and quiet defiance.

I would remember her. When I was outside these walls, when I had rebuilt myself into something that could help rather than just endure, I would find Daya. I would make sure she knew that small acts of kindness in cruel places were not wasted.

I tucked the herbs into my pocket and pulled on the clean shirt.

The day passed in a blur of avoidance. I stayed in my room. I drank water. I did not go to the healer—Vance would report my injuries to Grayson, and Grayson would ask questions I had no intention of answering. My wolf pushed heat through my limbs, forcing my body to fight off the cold that wanted to settle in my bones.

I slept in short bursts, never more than an hour at a time, my hand pressed to my abdomen.

Two months. I counted backward again, checking my math. Two months since the last time Grayson had touched me—a night that had meant nothing to him and everything to the life now growing inside me.

I hadn't known then. I knew now.

The pup changed nothing about my plan. It accelerated everything.

Three days left.

The knock came at dusk.

I opened the door to find Marcus, the Delta who had pulled me from the cellar. His face was grim.

"Alpha wants to see you," he said quietly. "In his office."

I followed him downstairs. My ribs protested every step. I ignored them.

Grayson's office door was open. He stood behind his desk, his posture rigid. Paige sat in the chair across from him, her face streaked with fresh tears. In her lap lay a small, limp form wrapped in a blanket.

Muffin.

I stopped in the doorway.

Paige looked up at me, and for one brief second, I saw it: the calculation in her eyes, the performance already in motion.

"You killed her," Paige whispered, her voice breaking. "You killed Muffin."

Grayson's gaze snapped to me. "Aviana."

I looked at the fox kit. At the unnatural angle of its neck. At the fibers from my patrol coat—the one I'd left hanging in the laundry room yesterday—carefully arranged near the body.

I said nothing.

"Security footage shows you in the laundry room this morning," Grayson said. His voice was cold, controlled. "Paige found Muffin an hour ago. Do you have anything to say?"

I could have explained that I'd been in the laundry room to retrieve my soaked clothes from the overnight kneeling. I could have pointed out that the coat fibers were too perfectly placed, that Paige's tears were too practiced.

I could have defended myself.

Instead, I met Grayson's eyes and felt the bond between us—that hollow, fraying thread—pull taut one last time.

"No," I said.

His jaw tightened. "You're confined to the cold-storage cellar until the pack council convenes for a formal hearing. Three days."

Three days.

The number landed in my chest like a gift.

I turned. Marcus took my arm—gently, apologetically—and led me down the stairs, through the kitchens, to the heavy steel door that opened onto the industrial cellar. The kind of space used for storing meat. For holding rogues awaiting exile.

The door sealed behind me with a sound like a vault closing.

I stood in the freezing dark and let my eyes adjust. Concrete walls. No windows. A single drain in the center of the floor. The temperature was just above freezing—cold enough to punish, not cold enough to kill quickly.

I wrapped my arms around myself and sank down against the least-cold wall.

A wave of nausea rolled through me, sharp and insistent. I pressed my palm flat against my abdomen and went very still.

Two months.

I counted backward one more time, checking, confirming. The timeline was tight but manageable. The pup was barely there yet, a cluster of cells that didn't know it was growing inside a woman who was about to disappear.

I closed my eyes and spoke silently to the life inside me—not prayers, not promises I couldn't keep. Just my voice, steady and low, the same voice I used when I talked wounded packmates through pain.

*I'm getting us out,* I told the pup. *Three days. You hold on, and I'll hold on, and we'll walk out of here together.*

My wolf stirred, pushing warmth through my core, wrapping around the fragile spark of life like a shield.

I shifted position, pressing my spine against the wall, generating heat through micro-movements. I would not sit still. I would not let the cold settle. I would move, constantly, the way prey animals move to survive winter.

Thirty-six hours until the door opened again.

I could do thirty-six hours.

I had done worse.
