My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress Novel Cover

My Alpha Scarred Me to Protect His Mistress

For eight years, I played the perfect Luna: straightening Dorian's tie, smoothing his lapel, smiling while the pack watched their Alpha. Then a folded note slipped from his jacket at 8:47 on a Saturday night, and I caught it before it hit the floor. I kept smiling. I called him handsome. He kissed my forehead and walked toward her. Every scar he carved into my skin was never protection — it was a shield for his mistress. Now the bond is bleeding, and the Luna who wore his mark must decide what she becomes when the lie finally ends.

Chapter 4

I waited until two in the morning.

Dorian slept the way he always slept after a long day of ceremony planning—flat on his back, one arm flung across my pillow, his breathing slow and unbothered. I slid out from under his arm one inch at a time. Cooper lifted his head at the foot of the bed. I touched his muzzle. He put his head back down.

The duplicate key was taped inside the spine of a healer's manual on the second shelf of the hallway bookcase. I'd made it four weeks ago at a hardware store two towns over, paid in cash, thrown the receipt into a gas station bin. My hands were steady when I lifted it out.

The study door opened without a sound. I'd oiled the hinges myself.

I didn't turn on the overhead light. I used the small desk lamp, angled toward the wall, and I worked from the outside of the desk in. Top drawer first—correspondence, receipts, the boring performance of an Alpha's paperwork. Second drawer—training schedules, alliance minutes. Third drawer, locked. The key was in the pen cup, exactly where he always left it, because Dorian had never once in eight years imagined that anyone in his own house would look.

The drawer slid open.

The maps were on top.

I unfolded the first one against the blotter and my breath went out of me in a single quiet push. Not a sliver of the eastern territory. Not a corner. The whole eastern range—every hunting ground from the ridge line to the river, the summer denning grounds, the elk migration corridor the pack had held for six generations—outlined in fresh red ink and re-labeled *Thornfield Cooperative Zone.* Signed at the bottom in Dorian's hand. Countersigned by Alpha Rivera. Dated four months before the banquet.

Four months. He'd already given her half my pack before she ever wrote the note.

I photographed it. Four angles, close-ups of both signatures, the date, the seal. My phone's shutter was silent. I'd turned it off weeks ago.

Underneath the maps: the agreements. Half a dozen, each labeled with the same careful euphemism—*alliance maintenance,* *cooperative resource sharing,* *inter-pack goodwill provisions.* Underneath those: the financial records. Quarterly transfers out of the pack treasury, coded as capital improvements. I followed the coding to the ledger tucked at the back—hand-written, not digital, because he wasn't stupid about everything—and there it was. Twelve installments. Materials, labor, permits. A den. On the Thornfield border. Built with the money the pack had raised for the new healer's wing.

I photographed all of it. I put every page back in the order I'd found it. I closed the drawer. I locked it. I put the key back in the pen cup at the exact angle it had been.

When I slid back into bed, Dorian rolled toward me in his sleep and murmured something and threw his arm across my waist. His scent was warm. My mark was warm.

I slept. I actually slept. My wolf and I had already done the hard part months ago.

---

He brought me tea at seven.

"Sit up, love." He set the cup on the nightstand and eased himself onto the edge of the mattress, careful of my scarred side the way he was always careful of it now, as though gentleness after the fact was a currency that spent. "I want to tell you about the altar."

"Mm." I pushed myself up against the pillows. Reached for the tea. "Tell me."

His voice went soft, that plaintive register he had learned to use with me and mistook for tenderness. He described the wood he had chosen—cedar, of course, our scent—and the white flowers, and the silver thread on the runner, and the words he had been drafting for the vow renewal, which he wanted to be honest, he said, which he wanted to be worthy of me.

I let my face do gentle gratitude. I let my eyes soften at the corners.

My left hand rested flat on my knee. My thumb pressed hard against the inside of my right wrist, and it pressed there for the entire fourteen minutes he spoke, and he did not notice, because he had never noticed.

"It's going to fix everything, Serena."

"I know it is."

He kissed my forehead and left for the training field.

I drank half the tea. Then I opened my messages and typed three words to Callum Reid.

*Take everything.*

His reply came inside the hour. *Judgment drafted. Courier on standby. Signal from you on the night, delivery within the ceremony window. Confirm.*

*Confirmed.*

I closed my eyes for a moment. Opened them. Got out of bed and went downstairs to make the pack their breakfast.

---

That week Dorian resumed his eastern drives. Less often. Still.

I didn't know Marcus followed him one of those nights until later, when I saw him at Friday's briefing and his eyes couldn't hold mine for more than a second. He looked like a man who had eaten something bad and was still deciding whether to admit it.

He didn't come to me. He didn't confront Dorian.

I watched him over the coffee urn and I understood exactly what he was doing—cataloguing, the way Betas catalogue, walking the pack house at odd hours, running his hand over the wall in the great room where the Luna's charter hung, standing too long in the doorway of the treasury office. He was preparing for a collapse he could not name.

He would name it, in three weeks, when the courier walked through the front door.

I poured him a fresh cup. Slid it across the counter. He took it without looking up.

"Thank you, Luna," he said.

"You're welcome, Marcus."

He held the cup with both hands, the way a man holds something to keep his hands from doing anything else, and I went back to slicing the bread.
