Chapter 2

He came at nine in the morning.

I heard his knock before I heard him — two firm raps, the Alpha's knock, the one that expected the door to open. Luna lifted her head from the rug. Her ears went flat.

I opened the door.

Alex looked exactly like himself. That was the thing that hit me first. He was showered, composed, his ceremonial whites traded for a clean grey shirt, his jaw freshly shaved. He looked like a man who had slept well. Like a man who had nothing to apologize for — or who had already decided that whatever apology he offered would be sufficient, and so had stopped worrying about it.

"Anna." He stepped inside without being invited. He always did that. "I'm sorry about last night."

I said nothing. I moved back to let him pass and stood with my hands loose at my sides.

"Carolina's injury — it couldn't wait." His voice was even. Measured. The kind of measured that meant he had practiced this on the walk over. "A training graze, but with her sensitivity, you know how fast it can turn. I couldn't leave her."

"Of course," I said.

He looked at me. Something in my tone almost caught his attention — I watched it flicker across his face, like a stone skipped over water — and then it was gone. He decided I was fine. He always decided I was fine.

"We'll reschedule. Dorian is flexible. The hall can be rebooked inside a month." He reached out and touched the silver pendant at my throat, his thumb brushing the moon charm with the casual familiarity of a man touching something he owned. "You looked beautiful last night, by the way. Your mother's work."

I watched his eyes while he said it. He was not lying — not exactly. He had looked at me last night, before everything fell apart. He had looked and found me adequate. I could see it in the way he said it now: an item checked off a list.

"Thank you," I said.

His hand dropped. "I'll have my Beta reach out to coordinate the new date."

"That's fine."

He left eight minutes after he arrived.

I stood at the closed door for a long moment. Luna came and pressed her nose against my ankle. I looked down at her.

"I know," I said quietly.

She already knew. She had known before I did.

---

The photos started three days later.

The first one was almost forgivable. Carolina in a grey morning, wearing what was clearly Alex's training jacket — the one with the Crimson Hollow crest on the left shoulder — her chin tucked against the collar, her hair loose. The caption read: *chilly patrol mornings call for borrowed warmth :)* A small sun emoji. A leaf. Three pack members had liked it before I even saw it.

The second one was worse because it was domestic. A pot of venison stew, steam rising from the surface, delivered to the Alpha's office. The frame caught the edge of Alex's desk, the familiar clutter of his reports and the ceramic mug I'd given him two winters ago. *made his favorite today — nothing like feeding your people :)* Her people. Like she belonged to Crimson Hollow. Like she had built something here.

The third one I should not have looked at for as long as I did. Carolina at the edge of the evening run trail, a water flask extended toward the camera — toward whoever was running, who was not in the frame but who I knew because I knew the trail and I knew the time of evening and I knew the only person who ran it at that hour. Her hair was down. She was smiling the smile she used when she wanted something. The caption was blank. No words. Just the image. The silence of it was louder than anything she could have written.

I put my phone face-down on my drafting table and went back to work.

But I noticed the pause. That was the thing I could not unfeel. When I passed two Delta women in the pack corridor the next afternoon, there was a half-second beat before one of them said my name — *Annabelle* — the way you might hesitate before saying a word you are suddenly not sure how to pronounce. She smiled warmly after. It was a real smile. But the pause had been there.

It had not been there before.

---

I did not confront Alex.

I am not sure I could explain exactly why — except that I had spent fifteen years choosing his comfort over my own certainty, and that old reflex ran very deep, and I was not ready. Not yet. And also, more honestly: I needed to think. I needed to be very sure of what I was doing before I did anything, because I had the sudden clear feeling that whatever came next would not be reversible.

So instead, I started to look at things carefully.

I pulled up my design client files and went through them, one by one, over three evenings. Most were clean — commissions I had sourced myself, brands I'd approached cold, small businesses who'd found me through my portfolio. But there were seven accounts, substantial ones, that had come through channels I had accepted without examining. A referral from a contact I couldn't quite place. An introduction through an intermediary I had assumed was pack-adjacent. Seven commissions that represented nearly a third of my annual income, and I realized I did not actually know who had sent them to me.

I copied everything to a private drive. My own. Password I had never shared with anyone.

Then I went to the wardrobe.

I told myself I was just organizing. But I pulled the things that were unambiguously mine — my books, my sketchbooks, two boxes of design supplies — and I moved them to the trunk I kept under the bed. I folded them in carefully. I did not pack quickly. I did not pack urgently. I packed the way you pack for a trip you have already decided to take but have not yet admitted to yourself.

The trunk slid back under the dust ruffle without a sound.

Luna watched from the foot of the bed, her chin on her paws.

I smoothed the dust ruffle flat and sat back on my heels and looked at it.

I did not ask myself why I was doing this.

That felt important — not asking. Because the moment I asked, I would have to answer, and the answer was already there, waiting, patient and cold and very certain. And I was not ready to say it out loud yet.

Not yet.

But the trunk was packed. And the drive was in my bag. And somewhere at the edge of my memory, a white rose was pressing itself flat between two blank pages, and my wolf — quiet for fifteen years — was awake.
