Chapter 5

The message left my hands on a Tuesday morning.

I watched Maren disappear down the corridor with the laundry basket, the folded linen square hidden beneath a pile of towels. My scarred hand pressed flat against the stone wall. The cold helped.

Two weeks, I'd written. Maybe less.

I went back to scrubbing floors.

---

Princeton stood at the window of his study when the message arrived.

I didn't see it happen. I couldn't. But I knew him well enough to picture it: the way he'd go entirely still, the way his court had learned to recognize as thought rather than inattention. The message would have been decoded by then, translated from the patrol cipher into words.

My location. My condition. My deadline.

He would read it once. Burn it. Not deliberate.

I knew this because ten years ago, when I'd taken the silver-tipped arrow meant for him, he hadn't hesitated then either. He'd carried me to the healer himself, stayed until my breathing steadied, and left without asking for thanks.

Princeton didn't deliberate. He decided.

Somewhere in the Ironveil Court, he was deciding now.

I pressed my hand against my abdomen. Felt the faint curve that wasn't visible yet.

Two weeks.

---

Damian couldn't sleep.

I heard it through the pack house walls — the restless pacing in the Alpha suite, the creak of floorboards at odd hours. He'd taken to walking the corridors at night, his footsteps heavy and uneven.

The third night, he summoned Analia to his study.

I was cleaning the hallway outside when her voice drifted through the half-open door. Light. Careful.

"You're worrying too much," she said. "The pregnancy is fine. I'm fine."

"Not that." Damian's voice was flat. "The rogue attack. The one where I lost my memory."

Silence.

"Tell me again," he said. "Where you were. What you saw."

I stopped scrubbing. My hand went still on the brush.

"I've told you," Analia said. Her tone was patient. "I pulled you out from under the beam. You were unconscious. I dragged you to safety."

"Which beam."

"The — the one that collapsed. From the old structure."

"Which side."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"I don't remember every detail," Analia said. "It was chaos. There were rogues everywhere."

"You said you remembered pulling me out."

"I did. I do. I just —" Her voice wavered. "Why are you asking me this?"

Damian didn't answer.

I heard him move toward the window. The floor creaked under his weight.

"Get Roland," he said finally. "Tell him I need the incident report. The original one. From the night of the ambush."

My heart stopped.

Analia's voice went very small. "Why?"

"Just get him."

I picked up my brush and moved down the hallway before she could open the door.

Behind me, I heard her footsteps — quick, unsteady — heading toward the Beta's quarters.

---

Roland brought the file two days later.

I was in the kitchens when he walked past, a sealed envelope tucked under his arm. His expression was carefully neutral, but I saw the tension in his shoulders. The way his jaw was set.

He'd read it.

Whatever was in that file, Roland had read it, and it had changed something.

I turned back to the cutting board and kept chopping. My hands were steady. My breathing was even.

But inside, my wolf stirred.

Not a howl. Not yet.

A low, waiting hum.

---

Roland didn't go to Damian's study right away.

I know because I tracked him through the pack house that afternoon — not obviously, not closely, just the way you track movement when you've spent eight years learning every sound and rhythm of a place. He went to the archives first. Pulled the medical records from Damian's recovery. Cross-referenced them with something else I couldn't see.

Then he went to the barracks and spoke quietly with two Deltas who'd been on patrol the night of the ambush.

Their faces, when they answered, were grim.

Roland returned to his quarters. Sat there for one full night.

I cleaned the corridor outside his door twice during that time. Heard nothing. No movement. No sound.

Just silence.

The next morning, Roland walked into Damian's study and set the envelope on the desk.

He didn't say a word.

Damian looked at it. Then at Roland.

"What is this."

"The incident report," Roland said. His voice was flat. "And the medical records. And the testimony from the two Deltas who carried you out."

Damian's hand hovered over the envelope.

"You asked for evidence," Roland said quietly. "It's all there."

He turned and left.

I was in the corridor when he passed. Our eyes met for half a second.

He said nothing.

But I saw it in his face: he knew.

He knew what the file said. He knew what it meant.

And he'd given it to Damian anyway.

---

I didn't see Damian open the envelope.

But I felt it.

The pack house went quiet that afternoon in a way that had nothing to do with sound. It was a stillness that pressed against the walls, against the air. The kind of quiet that comes before something breaks.

I was folding linens in the Omega quarters when I felt the remnant bond flare — not with pain this time, but with something rawer. Shock. Disbelief.

My hand went to the hollow at my neck.

The mark was dead. Cold. But the ghost of it still connected us, thin and fraying, and through it I felt the exact moment Damian understood.

The wolf who shielded him bore wounds on the left shoulder and forepaw.

Wounds that matched Theodora's scars exactly.

Analia was positioned on the perimeter.

She did not reach him until after the beam had already fallen.

I pressed my scarred hand flat against the table and closed my eyes.

Somewhere above me, in the Alpha suite, Damian was holding a piece of paper that dismantled everything he'd built his rejection on.

And I was two weeks — maybe less — from gone.

---

That night, Damian summoned Analia again.

I wasn't there. But the entire pack house heard it.

His voice, rough and rising. Her voice, high and breaking.

Then silence.

Then the sound of a door slamming.

I stayed in the Omega quarters and waited.

My wolf was awake now. Fully. For the first time since the rejection, I felt her — not dying, not silent, but coiled and watchful.

She wasn't howling.

She was counting down.

Two weeks.

Maybe less.

And somewhere in the Ironveil Court, Princeton's Lycan Beta was already moving.

The vehicle was ready. The route was mapped. The extraction team was assembled.

All I had to do was survive long enough to reach the drainage tunnels.

I pressed my hand against my abdomen.

The pup inside me was silent. Safe.

For now.

Above me, Damian's footsteps paced the Alpha suite.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

The sound of a man who'd just opened an envelope and found the truth waiting inside.
