Chapter 2

The live feed on my phone screen flickered, but the picture stayed sharp.

Cecelia hadn’t dropped the locket down the incinerator chute after all. Instead, she carried it upstairs by the chain, swinging it between two manicured fingers like a dead rodent.

She walked straight into the grand sitting room where the senior pack members were gathered for morning coffee. Cooper was there, along with two Delta guards and an elder.

"Look what our little wolfless stray left behind," Cecelia announced, her voice sweet and musical.

She held the vintage silver locket high, letting the morning sun hit the tarnished metal. It was my mother’s. The only thing I had left of the woman who raised me.

"Trash," Cooper chuckled, leaning back on the sofa. "Just throw it out, Cecelia."

"I was going to," Cecelia said with a pout. "But look how crusty it is. It probably has fleas."

She picked up a white ceramic mug from the console table. It was filled to the brim with scalding, freshly brewed espresso, dark and steaming. With a delicate tilt of her wrist, Cecelia poured the boiling black liquid directly over the locket.

The thermal shock was instant.

Through my phone’s speaker, I heard a sharp *crack*.

The antique silver buckled under the sudden heat. The delicate filigree warped, and the tiny internal hinge snapped clean in two. Black liquid hissed against the hot metal.

"Oops," Cecelia said, giggling behind her hand. "My hand slipped. Though I doubt anyone's coming back for that junk."

Cooper laughed out loud. The elder just looked away, sipping his tea. Cecelia tossed the dripping, ruined necklace into a stainless steel trash bin by the door with a dull clatter.

At the back of the room, near the hallway door, Mackenzie stood in her white healer’s scrubs. Her face was blank, but her knuckles were white against her clipboard.

Ten minutes later, once the room cleared, Mackenzie moved fast. On the camera screen, I watched her reach into the bin, wrap the wet locket in a clean cloth, and slip it into her pocket.

A second later, her voice hit my head through our private healer link, tight with anger.

*She broke it. You need to see this. I’m sending it with an off-pack courier now.*

Two hours later, a sharp knock rattled the thin door of my motel room.

I checked the peephole. A human delivery driver stood outside with a small padded envelope. I opened the door an inch, took the parcel, and tipped him with cash from my pocket.

Inside the envelope was the cloth-wrapped bundle.

I sat on the edge of the cheap mattress and peeled the fabric away.

The locket was ruined. The smooth silver oval was twisted out of shape, and a dark fracture ran straight across the backplate. The clasp was shattered. A faint, bitter smell drifted up from the crack—sharp like burned copper, but I barely registered it.

I traced the jagged seam with my thumb. For twenty years, this little piece of silver had rested against the hollow of my throat. I had worn it through my mother’s death, through three years of Killian’s cold bed, through every single insult. Whenever I took it off even for a minute, a strange, sickening dizziness would wash over me, so I had kept it on like second skin.

Now, the clasp was gone. There was no way to fasten the chain.

"Just a piece of metal," I whispered to the empty room.

I set the broken locket down on the laminate nightstand, next to my prenatal vitamins.

I lay back on the bed, pulled the scratchy blanket over my shoulders, and placed both hands over my flat belly. My pup was safe. Killian’s strong blood was already weaving into my flesh. That was the only thing that mattered.

I closed my eyes, intending to rest.

Around noon, the heat started.

It didn’t start on my skin. It started deep in the marrow of my bones.

A sharp, searing line of agony shot down my spine, so violent that my eyes snapped open and my breath hitched in my throat. I tried to sit up, but my arms gave out. I tumbled off the bed, hitting the rough carpet with a thud.

*What is happening?*

My blood felt like it had been replaced with boiling oil. Every joint in my body began to pop. The sound was loud, like dry twigs snapping in a fire.

My skeleton was expanding.

I clamped my jaw shut to keep from screaming, curling my body into a tight ball on the floor to shield my stomach. Even through the blinding pain, a cool, protective current wrapped around my lower abdomen, keeping my womb untouched and safe.

My fingernails split down the middle, replaced by long, razor-sharp black claws that shredded the carpet fibers. The muscles across my back tore and rewove themselves in seconds, swelling with an impossible, terrifying mass.

Werewolves didn't shift like this. Shifts were supposed to be fast, fluid, and natural. This felt like a wall of water bursting through a cracked dam after twenty years of pressure.

I convulsed on the floor, gasping for air that tasted like ozone and winter lightning.

Then, a sound tore through my skull.

It wasn't a thought. It was a roar—ancient, deafening, and absolute.

A voice detonated inside my chest, vibrating through every drop of my blood:

*"Hello, Delilah."*

The voice was pure thunder, feminine and sovereign, carrying an authority so immense it made my soul tremble.

*"My name is Seraphine. I am your wolf. I have been waiting for you for a very long time."*

A blinding flash of silver light exploded behind my eyes.

The pressure in the motel room spiked instantly. The air grew heavy, thick with wild lavender and pure, untamed power. The drywall groaned. Thin spiderweb cracks raced up the plaster walls, and the wooden floorboards beneath me buckled and splintered under a sudden, massive weight.

My wolf was twice the size of Killian’s.

Her fur was brilliant, blinding silver-white. And as she rose up within my flesh, shaking off twenty years of poison, her golden eyes looked through mine.
