Chapter 2

The ceremonial chamber was all dark wood and shadows. Two Ironmaw guards had walked me here through corridors that smelled like old stone and something sharper—authority, maybe, or just the concentrated scent of too many dominant wolves living too close together. They left me at the door without a word.

I stood in the center of the room in a white gown someone had laid out for me. It wasn't mine. The fabric was too fine, the fit too deliberate. Someone had planned this moment down to what I'd be wearing when the crippled Alpha claimed me.

My arms still ached under the bandages. The burns from the fire were healing, but slowly. I'd caught my reflection in a window on the way here—I looked exactly like what I was. Damaged goods. A substitute bride delivered to settle someone else's debt.

I waited. My wolf sent nothing through the silence. She'd been quiet since the rejection, that absolute cold stillness that felt less like absence and more like something holding its breath.

The door opened.

I braced. Lifted my chin. Whatever was coming, I'd survive it the way I'd survived the fire—by moving forward even when every instinct screamed to run.

But the man who stepped through wasn't old. Wasn't crippled. Wasn't anything I'd prepared for.

He was young—maybe a year or two older than me—and the aura that rolled off him hit like a temperature drop. Not the crushing dominance of an Alpha trying to intimidate. Something deeper. Something that made my wolf stir for the first time in days, a slow unfurling that felt less like waking and more like recognition.

He stopped just inside the doorway. Tall. Dark hair. A scar cutting along his left shoulder, visible where his shirt collar didn't quite cover it. His eyes locked on mine, and he went completely still.

Then he crossed the room in three strides, stopped exactly three feet away, and inhaled.

The way his expression changed—I'd never seen anything like it. Not surprise. Something rawer. Like he'd been searching for something in the dark and just found it lit up in front of him.

"You," he said. His voice was low, controlled, but there was an edge underneath. "You pulled me from the water."

I blinked. "What?"

"Three years ago. Pacific storm. Silver poisoning." He didn't move closer, but his gaze tracked over my face like he was cataloging every detail. "You gave me the antidote. Mouth to mouth. I never saw your face, but I never forgot your scent."

The memory surfaced—blurry, half-drowned itself. A night dive gone wrong. A sinking vessel. A man tangled in silver-laced wreckage, his lips already blue. I'd administered the wolfsbane antidote because leaving him there wasn't an option, and then I'd surfaced and never looked back because that's what you did when you were already late getting home to your mate.

Your mate who would abandon you in a fire three years later.

"You've been looking for me," I said slowly.

His jaw tightened. "Every resource I had. For three years."

I stared at him. At this stranger who wasn't supposed to be here, who was supposed to be a crippled tyrant but instead was standing in front of me radiating Lycan-level power and telling me he'd spent three years searching for a woman whose face he'd never seen.

"Where's Alpha Stephen?" I asked.

Something shifted in his expression. "Gone. I overthrew him three weeks ago. Ironmaw is mine now."

The room felt smaller suddenly. "You overthrew your own father."

"He was a tyrant." Flat. No emotion. "The pack is better without him. And you—" He stopped. Started again. "You were never going to be delivered to him. I made sure of that."

My mind was racing, trying to fit the pieces together. The substitute arrangement. The timing. The fact that the man standing in front of me had Lycan aura and was looking at me like I was something that mattered.

"Why?" I asked.

He reached up, fingers brushing the scar on his shoulder. "Because I owe you my life. Because my wolf recognized your scent three years ago and never stopped looking. Because—" He met my eyes. "Because the Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes."

The mark on my neck—Apollo's mark, cold and dead since the rejection—pulsed once. Not warmth. Just an echo of what used to be there, a ghost of a bond that no longer existed.

I took a breath. Let it out. Three years with Apollo had taught me one thing: nothing was free.

"What do you want from me in return?" I asked.

The question landed between us. I watched him process it, saw the flicker of something that might've been pain cross his face before his expression smoothed.

"Nothing that isn't freely given," he said quietly.

I waited for the condition. The catch. The part where he explained what freely given actually meant and how much it would cost me.

He didn't add anything. Just held my gaze, steady and certain, like the answer was exactly what he'd said and nothing more.

Finally, he stepped back. "You need rest. I'll show you to your quarters."

He led me down another corridor to a suite that was three times the size of anything I'd had in Driftwood. Private. Quiet. A window that looked out over dark forests stretching toward distant mountains.

"No one will disturb you," he said from the doorway. "If you need anything, there's a call button by the bed. Someone will come."

I turned to face him. He was already halfway into the hall.

"What's your name?" I asked.

He paused. Looked back.

"Ronin," he said. "Ronin Bennett."

Then he left, closing the door behind him with a soft click.

I stood there in the silence, my wolf finally stirring—not with grief this time, but with something I didn't have a name for yet.

I crossed to the window and looked out at the unfamiliar territory spreading below.

Nothing that isn't freely given.

I wanted to believe him.

I didn't know if I could.
