9.4 / 10.0
She crawled out of the dark with a shattered knee and a scar that never stopped burning, yet nothing broke her like the sight waiting at Ironveil's gates. Her mate stood with another—her own sister, draped in the Luna cloak meant for her. The rejection struck at 4:17 PM, sealing the mark on her neck. With her pack, her love, and her identity stolen, she faces a brutal choice: vanish into the shadows forever, or forge herself anew from the ruins of a broken bond.

My Alpha Rejected Me for My Returned Sister Chapter 1

The rejection landed at 4:17 on a Sunday afternoon, and I felt the mark on my neck go white-cold before I understood the word he had used.

I had walked through the Ironveil gates ten minutes earlier, dragging one leg because the rogues had broken something in my knee three weeks ago and it had healed wrong in the dark. My shirt was crusted to the burn on my ribs. My hair smelled like the warehouse — mold and old blood and the iron chain they had used to hold my throat to the floor. Ninety-nine mind-link pleas. I had counted them on my fingers, one per day, until the fingers didn't work anymore.

The great hall was full. White banners. Candles. A Luna cloak draped over a woman I had never seen, who wore my sister's name like a stolen coat. Griffin stood on the dais with his hand at the small of her back.

His eyes found me.

There was no relief in them. No surprise. Just the flat, decided quiet of a man who had already chosen his sentence and was only waiting for the room to sit down.

"I, Griffin Ashford, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack," he said, in the full weight of his Alpha tone, "reject you, Willow Hart, as my fated mate."

Something inside me made a sound like a door closing in an empty house.

The mark site on my neck went cold first — a small circle of frost, then a spreading numbness that ate down my collarbone. My wolf, who had held on through the warehouse, through the chain, through every day I whispered *he will come* — my wolf let out one tearing howl inside my skull, and then went silent.

Not dead. Silent.

There is a difference. I would learn the difference later. In that moment I only knew that the thing which had been alive at the back of my ribs since I was thirteen years old had folded down like a bird under a hand and stopped.

My aura cracked. I felt it go — a hairline fracture running down the middle of me. Two wolves near the front row flinched and looked at the floor.

The imposter smiled.

I did not scream. I did not fall. I stood in the doorway with my scarred arms at my sides and I did not open my mouth. I watched Griffin's face. For one heartbeat something moved behind his eyes — his wolf, maybe, trying to say a thing his mouth had already refused. Then her hand slid up his forearm, and the moment shut.

A Delta touched my elbow. I let him lead me to a back room off the kitchen corridor. He did not meet my eyes. No healer came.

---

The cot smelled of dust. I sat on the edge of it and pressed two fingers to the cold place on my neck.

It was a scar. Not a tether. A scar.

I said this to myself twice.

Then the channel opened.

I had heard rejected wolves describe the phantom bond — a scar-tissue passage the Moon Goddess leaves behind, thin as paper, still transmitting. What no one had told me was that it worked both ways whether you wanted it or not. Griffin's contentment washed through me in a slow warm current. His relief. Somewhere in the hall, he was laughing. She had said something, and he was laughing.

I counted to ten.

Inside me, my wolf gave one weak pulse — not a howl, just a heartbeat pressed against a wall. *I am here.* Buried, but here.

"Wait," I whispered to her. "Wait for me."

Then I stood up and went looking for the archive room.

---

The pack library was cold and unattended by morning. I found the pack-law compendium on the third shelf, bound in dark leather, spine crackling from disuse. Three generations since anyone had cracked it. I sat on the floor because standing hurt, and I opened it across my knees.

*The Luna Accord.* Article by article. Precedent by precedent. Invocation protocol.

I read the way I used to eat during captivity — slowly, so my body wouldn't reject it.

"Sister."

She stood in the doorway in a pale cashmere sweater that had been ordered for me last winter. Her scent hit the air a half-second late — florals layered over something faintly medicinal underneath. Wolfsbane, if I had known then what to name.

"Do you need anything?" she said. "Tea? A blanket? I'm so glad you made it home."

I closed the compendium against my chest. I looked at her.

"No."

She held the smile a moment too long. Her eyes moved over the book, the shelves, my face. Then she left.

I opened the book again. I read until the windows went black.

---

The healer came at Griffin's grudging permission that evening. Young, nervous, avoiding my eyes. She unwrapped the burn on my ribs and sucked in a breath she tried to hide.

"Alpha's orders," she murmured to my collarbone. "You're to stay in the back quarters. Not the common rooms."

I nodded once.

"Where are the elders' formal session records kept?"

She blinked up at me. "East wing. Third door. Why —"

"Thank you."

I already knew. I had needed to hear a second mouth confirm the room number.

---

I slept in pieces. Around two in the morning the phantom channel surged open without warning — a hot flood of *his* desire, unmistakable, immediate. Her mouth on his neck. His hands. The sound he made.

My wolf came off the floor of my mind like an animal thrown at a fence. She thrashed. She raked her claws down the inside of my skull, howling without sound, and I sat up gasping with both hands flat on my knees.

"Stop," I whispered. "Stop. Stop."

I began, brick by brick, to build a wall.

*Sovereign interiority.* Article Nine, subsection three. The Accord's own words. A rejected, unmarked Luna has the right to close the phantom channel by disciplined mental partition. It takes two hours of unbroken concentration and it holds imperfectly.

I built for two hours.

At the far end of the pack house, someone laughed — his laugh, muffled through a wall — and I laid the last brick over the sound.

My wolf went still.

Not defeated. Waiting.

Below my window, in the frost-bitten garden, a shape moved between the hedges. A woman in a pale cashmere sweater, walking quickly with a small sealed vial cupped in one hand, glancing once over her shoulder toward the lit window of Griffin's room.
