My Alpha Rejected Me for His Pregnant Omega
My Alpha Rejected Me for His Pregnant Omega Chapter 1
Fourteen hours before my Mate Ceremony, I smelled her on him.
I was standing outside Grant's Alpha suite with a leather portfolio in my hands. Three years of my handwriting. Every border treaty, every alliance, every seating chart for tomorrow night. The door was open a crack. I heard nothing.
But I smelled it. Grant's cedar scent, and laid over it like a second skin, something sweet and cheap. Peach. Piper Smith, the Omega we had pulled out of rogue land last spring.
I pushed the door open.
Grant sat up in bed. Piper's dark hair spilled across his bare chest. The sheet had slipped, and the lamplight caught the round swell of her belly.
I didn't move. I didn't drop the portfolio.
Grant looked at me, and there was no guilt in his face. Only relief. Like I was a meeting he had been waiting to get over with.
"Good," he said. "Saves me a conversation."
"Does it." My voice came out flat.
"You knew this was coming, Sloane. Your wolf barely exists. You're one step above Omega, and everyone sees it. You embarrass the Alpha line." He put his hand on Piper's stomach. "She's carrying my heir. Something your broken blood could never give me."
Piper watched me from the pillow. She smiled, small and pleased, and rubbed her belly in slow circles.
My chest went cold first, then hollow, like a door closing on an empty room. My nails sank into my palms until I felt wet heat. Deep inside me, something I had never felt before lifted its head and growled.
"Say something," Grant snapped. Then his voice dropped, heavy with Alpha tone. "*Answer me.*"
The weight hit my shoulders. My knees wanted to bend.
They didn't.
I bent down instead, slow and on my own terms, and set the portfolio on the floor outside his door. Then I straightened, turned my back on my Alpha, and walked away.
I heard him curse behind me. I didn't stop.
---
Calliope Anderson, our Beta female and the only real friend I had, opened her door before I knocked twice. She looked at my white face and my bleeding hands. She didn't say a word. She pulled me inside and locked the door.
I told her everything in the same voice I used for patrol reports.
Her jaw went tight. Then her eyes went sharp.
"Sit," she said. "I need to show you something I should have shown you weeks ago."
She pulled a box from under her bed. Border-scout reports. Dozens of them.
"Grant's been slipping out past the north line at night," she said. "Meeting wolves nobody can name. Every scout who filed one of these got moved to remote patrol within three days."
"And you kept quiet."
"I kept *copies*." She dropped them on the floor. "Get mad at me later. Read now."
We spread them across her rug and worked through the night. Meeting points. Times. Paw prints with a thorn-shaped scar on the left forepad. A scrap of a map with Grant's own handwriting on it.
By three a.m., I saw it.
"Bloodthorn," I said quietly. "He's giving their Alpha half the north. Three warrior settlements. The supply corridor." I tapped Grant's note. "For an army and the title of regional paramount."
Calliope swore.
I stared at the map. The hollow place in my chest filled with something cold and still. Not grief.
Purpose.
---
I made three copies of everything.
One went behind the ledger in my quarters, the one I had kept for three years. One went into Calliope's hands, with my petition to the Lycan Council asking for an emergency tribunal under the Luna Accord. I wrote every word myself.
The third I sealed and sent to Caleb Hayes, our senior border scout. My note was short: *Look at your own reports. Those prints are Bloodthorn.*
"Now what?" Calliope asked.
"Now I go to the ceremony."
She stared at me. "He's going to reject you. In front of everyone."
"I know."
"Sloane, that isn't strategy. That's punishment dressed up as strategy."
"It's both." I capped my pen. "The pack needs to see who he is before the Council comes for what he's done." I paused. "And Cal? Make sure Theron is in the hall."
Something flickered across her face. She looked away too fast.
"He'll be there," she said.
---
At first light, I dressed. The pale silver gown I had picked weeks ago. Pins in my hair, one at a time.
Last, I picked up my pendant. The one I was found with as a baby. I turned it in the light and studied the strange mark on its face, a crescent cut through by a thorn of frost. I had always called it nothing.
Today I held it longer.
I fastened it at my throat. Something deep inside me shifted, slow and old, like a beast rolling over in its sleep.
I breathed through my teeth and counted my pulse until it was steady.
Then the pack mind-link crackled open, loud enough for every wolf in Ironcrest to hear.
Grant's voice. Warm. Proud.
*"Tonight, Ironcrest finally gets a real Luna. Wear white, Piper."*
