My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress Novel Cover

My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

At 10:14 on a Thursday, before two hundred witnesses, the mate bond snapped. I felt it tear before Colton spoke—a frozen wire in my chest cut clean. The unfinished mark on my neck went ice-cold, then hollow as an abandoned room. Ten minutes earlier, I'd drifted through the Ironridge banquet hall with Buster at my heels, unseen by the pack elite who stepped around me like furniture. Tomorrow was meant to be our Mate Ceremony. Three years late, but finally happening. Instead, the Alpha I waited for chose his mistress—leaving me marked, rejected, and alone in a room full of wolves.

Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Thursday night, in front of two hundred witnesses.

I felt it snap before I heard the words. A frozen wire inside my chest, pulled tight for three years, suddenly severed. The incomplete mark on my neck—the one Colton had never finished—went ice-cold first, then empty, like a door closing on a room that had already been abandoned.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Ten minutes earlier, I'd been moving through the Ironridge banquet hall with Buster pressed close to my heels. The pack elite ignored me the way they always did—stepping around me like I was furniture, their conversations flowing over my head as if I couldn't hear them. The banquet was supposed to be a celebration. Tomorrow was the Mate Ceremony. Three years late, but finally happening.

Except Colton wasn't at the head table.

I told myself it didn't mean anything. He was Alpha. He had responsibilities. But my feet carried me toward the back hallway anyway, Buster's claws clicking softly on the stone floor behind me.

That's when I heard the laughter.

I stopped outside a private alcove. The door was cracked open just enough. Inside, Colton sat on a leather sofa, April draped against his side like she'd been there for hours. Her hand rested on his thigh. His arm curved around her waist.

"—dead wolf," Colton was saying, and the easy intimacy in his voice made something crack inside me that had nothing to do with bonds. "Three years and not even a flicker. The ceremony tomorrow is just optics at this point."

April laughed—a bright, sharp sound. "A wolfless she-wolf standing beside an Alpha as Luna. Can you imagine? The other packs would never stop mocking you."

"I know." Colton's voice dropped lower, softer. The voice he used to use with me, back when I still believed he meant it. "You're the one who should be up there tomorrow. You sacrificed everything for this pack. For me."

Buster whimpered at the threshold.

April's head turned. She saw the dog before she saw me. Her smile didn't break. She just lifted her foot—casually, like swatting a fly—and kicked him in the ribs.

Buster yelped and scrambled back.

Colton laughed.

I stepped into the light.

The laughter died. April straightened slowly, her hand still on Colton's thigh. Colton's face went carefully blank—the expression he used when he was deciding how much truth to admit to.

"How long?" My voice came out quieter than I'd intended. Not weak. Just precise.

Colton stood. "Lila—"

"How long have you been with her?" I looked at April. Her dress was red. The same red as the lipstick smudged faintly on Colton's collar. "And don't insult me by pretending this just started."

April's smile returned, thin and satisfied. "Does it matter?"

"Yes."

"Two years," Colton said. His jaw tightened. "Maybe longer. I stopped counting."

Two years. The number sat in my chest like a stone. Two years of half-answers and delayed ceremonies and nights he said he was too busy to see me. Two years of the pack whispering that I wasn't good enough, while he stood beside the woman who actually wasn't good enough and told her she was everything.

"You never intended to mark me," I said.

"No." He didn't even hesitate. "I thought I could. When I first scented you at that gathering, something pulled me toward you. But you never awakened your wolf. A Luna needs to project strength, and you—" He gestured vaguely at me, like I was a problem he'd tried to solve and failed. "You don't."

Behind me, I heard footsteps. Voices. The banquet hall's side door was just beyond the alcove, and the allied Alphas inside were starting to notice the disturbance.

Colton heard them too. I saw the decision form on his face—the same look he got when he was about to deploy Alpha tone to end an argument he didn't want to have.

He stepped past me, into the hallway. Into the light where the Alphas could see him.

"I, Colton, Alpha of Ironridge," he said, his voice carrying through the sudden silence, "reject you, Lila, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

It felt like a wire breaking inside my chest—sharp, cold, final. The incomplete mark on my neck turned to ice, then to nothing. And deep inside me, in the place where my wolf had been silent my entire life, something screamed.

Not words. Just sound. Raw and furious and so loud I couldn't understand how no one else heard it.

My knees buckled. I caught myself on the doorframe, fingernails scraping stone.

Colton stood in the center of the hallway, two hundred pairs of eyes on him. He looked relieved.

I felt it through the phantom bond—the last transmission before the connection burned away entirely. Relief. Like he'd finally put down something heavy.

I straightened slowly. My legs shook, but they held.

The banquet hall had gone completely silent. Every Alpha, every Luna, every ranked wolf in Ironridge territory was watching.

I met Colton's eyes across the distance.

"You will regret this," I said quietly, "before every Alpha who heard you speak."

Then I turned, collected Buster, and walked out.

Behind me, the whispers started—a wave of sound rising like static. I didn't look back. I didn't run.

I just walked.

And inside me, in the dark, my wolf howled.

For the first time in my life, I answered it.

*Not yet,* I told her. *But soon.*
