Chapter 4

The third evening, I was slicing onions when Kayla came into the kitchen.

I heard her before I saw her — the deliberate click of heels on stone, a sound no one wore in a working kitchen unless they were making a point. Three pack members were at the long counter behind me: Marta at the bread, Jenna washing greens, old Bram sorting the meat for tomorrow's stew. I felt them all go quiet at the same moment.

Kayla stopped just inside the doorway. She was wearing pale grey silk that caught the lamplight, and her hand rested on the flat of her stomach in a way that made the gesture the entire sentence before she spoke.

"Violette." Warm. Almost friendly. "I wanted you to know first."

I kept slicing. The knife moved. My hand knew what to do without me.

"I felt him this afternoon," she said. "He's already strong. The healer says it's early to feel movement, but she thinks it's the bloodline — Donovan's bloodline runs hot." A small laugh, private, meant to be overheard. "I've chosen a name. Rowan. Donovan approved it this morning."

Inside my ribs, my wolf slammed against the bone. Once. Hard enough that my breath caught halfway out of me.

I set the knife down. I set the bowl down beside it. I did both of those things with the care of a woman handling something that could shatter, because if I moved any faster I did not trust what would come out of my hands.

I turned. I looked at her.

Her eyes were already on my face, waiting. That was what told me — the precise, calibrated attention of a woman checking whether the wound was still open. She wanted to see it move. She had come to the kitchen with three witnesses to watch me flinch.

I did not flinch. I said nothing.

A silence stretched between us, and in it I could hear Marta stop kneading the bread, Jenna's hands still under the running water, Bram breathe in and hold it. Kayla's mouth tightened, just a fraction, at the corner.

"Well." She smoothed her hand once more over her stomach. "I thought you should know. Rowan will need a nursemaid he trusts."

She left. Her heels clicked back down the corridor.

I turned back to the counter. My left hand, hidden from the other three by the line of my body, pressed flat against the wood, and I watched the color leave my knuckles from the inside — white, then whiter, until my fingers ached. I picked up the knife again. The onions were waiting.

Bram cleared his throat, softly. He did not say anything. He just moved a little closer along the counter, so that his shoulder was almost in line with mine, and he stayed there until I finished the board.

---

I waited until the pack house had gone quiet.

My room was cold. I locked the door — a small useless lock, but a lock — and pulled both sets of records from the lining of my bag. Elara's small leather ledger. The older healer's file I had kept for three years. I laid them side by side on the stripped mattress under the low lamp.

Week three. Elara's ledger: *Trace wolfsbane detected in serum.* The official log for the same week, in a different hand: *Standard prenatal formula administered. Patient tolerating well.*

Week four. Elara: *Concentration increased.* Official: *Standard formula. Patient reports mild fatigue — attributed to first trimester.*

Week five. Elara: *Sufficient to compromise fetal viability. Alpha instructs: continue.* Official: *Standard formula. Patient reports cramping. Recommended rest.*

Every line matched. Every date. Every falsified entry sat exactly where Elara's private record showed the poison going in. It was not sloppy. It was not desperate. It was a man who had sat down with a healer and told her which lies to write in which weeks.

I took out my phone — the small cheap one Donovan had never bothered to take, because he did not think of me as someone who would need to record anything — and I photographed each page. Elara's first. Then the official log, held beside it, so the dates lined up in the frame. I did every week. I did the margins. I did the signatures.

I opened the cloud account I had made two years ago and never used, and I sent the images up into a place he did not know existed.

Then I sealed the pages back into the lining and pressed the seam flat with my palm, twice, three times, until the fabric lay smooth.

My wolf did not move. She was there — a silver weight behind my sternum, patient, unhurried — but she did not press against the bone tonight. She was watching me work. I understood that, the way I was beginning to understand things about her without words. She was waiting for me to be ready.

---

The fourth night, the summons was not spoken.

I was standing at the edge of the evening assembly, near the back where the labor wolves stood, when I felt it hit. A cold pressure at the base of my skull. My legs answered it before my mind understood what had come through the bond.

*Come.*

My body turned. My feet carried me forward through the assembled pack, one row, then the next, and my mind clawed at the compulsion from the inside like a hand scraping the inside of a door. Nothing gave. My knees kept walking.

The pack parted. Two hundred faces, and not one of them met mine. Marcus turned his head. Jenna looked at the floor. Bram closed his eyes.

Donovan stood at the far end of the hall, waiting. He did not speak when I reached him. He simply turned and walked, and my body followed, out through the wide doors and into the cold air, down the path that led past the training yard and past the kennels, toward the low stone wall at the edge of the pack grounds.

Toward the cemetery.

Behind us, in a long silent line under the moon, the pack followed.
