Chapter 4

The great hall of the Silverfang Pack was carved from dark mountain stone, lit by iron chandeliers that threw long, flickering shadows against the walls. Hundreds of wolves from across the continent filled the space, their voices rising in a low, continuous rumble of pack politics and old rivalries.

I took a breath, letting the cool mountain air settle in my lungs, and smoothed the front of my gown.

It was tailored silk, cut clean and elegant in the deep forest green of the Western Lycan house. No laces, no frills. Five years ago, I had worn faded jeans and an apron stained with flour and wolf blood, scrubbing floors I had built defenses for. Tonight, the heavy Lycan crest was pinned over my heart in silver and obsidian.

Magnus stepped up beside me.

His hand brushed the small of my back, his touch warm and steady through the silk. Then, as we cleared the arched entryway and stepped onto the polished stone, he took half a step back.

He positioned himself slightly behind my left shoulder.

It was his signature stance in public. To the Lycan court, the message was unmistakable: *She leads, he guards.* The Lycan delegates along the perimeter bowed their heads the moment our boots hit the floor, their eyes dropping in silent deference.

The regional Alpha delegates, however, stared in stunned disbelief. In their world, an Alpha never walked behind his Luna. To them, an Alpha took the floor and his mate followed in his shadow. Watching the most lethal Lycan Prince in America trail a woman like an unyielding shield made their jaws slacken.

I kept my chin up, my eyes fixed ahead.

At the far end of the hall, seated on a raised dais beneath the grand treaty banners, was the Lycan King.

He sat completely alone on the sovereign seat. He looked like carved granite, his broad shoulders squared, silver threaded through his dark hair. The moment I crossed the center line of the hall, his eyes locked onto mine.

He didn't speak. He didn't nod. But his nostrils flared slightly, testing the air, and his heavy gaze tracked my every step with an intensity that sent a strange, electric shiver racing down my spine.

Beside me, my dormant wolf gave a faint, restless twitch, as if answering an echo she hadn't heard in a lifetime.

A sudden stir at the eastern entrance broke the quiet.

The heavy double doors swung open, and the herald called out, "Alpha Aiden Evans and Lady Elora of the Nightshade Pack."

A ripple of hushed murmurs spread through the crowd.

Aiden walked in with his chest puffed out, a dark tailored suit clinging to his frame. Beside him walked Elora. She was draped in pale lavender, moving with exaggerated, delicate care. One of her hands rested conspicuously over her rounded belly, drawing every eye in the room to her supposed pregnancy.

She looked the part of a pampered Luna, but the whispers circling the hall weren't about her.

They were about Aiden.

Earlier that morning, the summit had held an informal boundary run through the forest—a tradition meant to let the visiting leaders blow off steam. Wolves had seen Aiden shift.

And they had seen what had become of him.

Once a massive, terrifying Alpha wolf with pitch-black fur and crushing shoulders, Aiden’s shifted form had withered. The Moon Goddess's punishment for brutally severing a fated mate bond was stamped into his very biology. His wolf was now barely larger than a common Delta. Diminished. Thinning.

Aiden knew the wolves were whispering, and it made him brittle.

"Step aside," Aiden barked at a Silverfang steward who moved to take his coat. His human voice slammed against the stone with a loud, aggressive Alpha tone—harsh, grating, and far louder than the formal setting required. "Clear the aisle."

He was overcompensating. He threw his command around like a club because the raw aura of his beast could no longer back it up.

I stood motionless beside Magnus, my fingers relaxed at my sides.

Then, the draft from the high stained-glass windows shifted.

The scent of wild honeysuckle and winter pine—amplified by the quiet power humming in my blood—drifted across the open space between the delegations.

Aiden froze mid-step.

His head snapped in my direction. His nostrils flared violently, his chest heaving as if he had just taken a punch to the gut. For five years, the phantom scent of our broken bond had haunted his empty rooms and rotted his wolf from the inside out. He had chased the ghost of it in his sleep.

Now, he was looking right at the source.

His eyes dilated, turning pitch-black at the edges. His face twisted into a look of absolute, ravenous obsession. He didn't acknowledge the Silverfang hosts. He didn't look at Elora, who reached for his elbow with a practiced, sweet smile only to have him wrench his arm out of her grip.

Aiden broke all protocol. He bypassed the heralds, ignoring the formal greeting line entirely, and marched straight across the center of the hall toward the Lycan banner.

The chatter in the room died. Glasses clinked onto trays and went still.

Aiden stopped six feet from where I stood. He barely even glanced at Magnus, whose presence hovered over me like a dark storm cloud waiting to break. Aiden’s eyes were locked on my face, drinking me in with a sickening, possessive hunger.

He adjusted his cuffs, his lips pulling into an arrogant, patronizing smirk.

"Saoirse," he said, pitching his voice so it carried clearly across the quiet floor. He smiled as if he were bestowing a royal favor upon a beggar. "I have to admit, you did well for yourself hiding out in the West. But the games are over now."

I didn't blink. I didn't breathe.

Aiden took a half-step forward, his voice dripping with magnanimous condescension.

"I know why you left, and I know how hard it must have been for you out there," he declared, spreading his hands before the entire assembly of Alphas. "So let me say it publicly: I forgive you. I forgive you for running away, Saoirse. Nightshade is ready for you, and I am prepared to generously accept you back as my Luna."

The hall dropped into absolute, suffocating silence.
