Chapter 2

The sterile smell of the Lycan clinic took weeks to fade from my skin.

My body healed under Isolde’s careful hands, but my nerves stayed shredded. Every time an orderly moved too fast, or a warrior outside raised their voice in command, my stomach cramped with pure panic. My breath would hitch, and my hands would shake, instinctively searching my lap for phantom blood on cold stone.

Magnus saw every bit of it.

He was the Lycan Prince, a man whose presence alone could force a dozen Alphas to bare their throats. Yet around me, he vanished his aura completely. It must have taken excruciating control, but he pulled his terrifying power inward until he felt like ordinary warmth. He kept our emerging mind-link dialed down to a faint, soothing hum—just a trace of cedarwood and rain brushing against my consciousness, never crowding me, never demanding an answer.

One evening, through the cracked door of my recovery room, I heard him speaking to his Beta, Cressida Vane.

"No one uses a dominant tone in this wing," Magnus said. His voice was low, flat, and absolute. "Not an elder, not a trainer, not a guard. If anyone flexes an aura within fifty feet of her, Cressida, I will strip their rank on the spot."

Cressida didn't argue. In the history of the Western Lycan court, an order like that had never been issued. But it was obeyed without a single question.

Five years passed, quiet and steady.

I didn't just survive in the Western Territories; I rebuilt myself. I refused to be a decorative Luna sitting on a velvet chair. Instead, I went to work. I took the compound's chaotic clinic logs and drew up strict triage protocols that cut warrior recovery times in half. I redesigned the border patrol rotations, replacing exhausted double shifts with overlapping defensive lines that left no blind spots.

The Lycan warriors didn't respect me because Magnus commanded them to. They respected me because the strategies I gave them kept them coming home alive.

And then there was Aspyn.

At four years old, she had bright, curious eyes and an infectious laugh that could disarm the grumpiest guards in the yard. She called Magnus "Papa" without ceremony, running to meet his long strides in her tiny sneakers the second he returned from court. At night, Buster, our massive shaggy wolfhound, slept curled at the foot of her bed like a living boulder, never leaving her side.

I stood by the tall window of our private quarters, watching Aspyn toss a tennis ball across the lawn for Buster. Without thinking, my right hand lifted. My thumb pressed gently against the small scar at the base of my throat, where Magnus had marked me years ago. It was a grounding habit I had developed during the worst of the flashbacks, a silent reminder that I was safe.

A warm, calloused hand covered mine.

Magnus stepped up behind me, his chest a solid wall against my back. His scent wrapped around my senses—crushed cedarwood and the charged bite of an incoming thunderstorm.

"Thinking hard?" he murmured near my ear.

"Just watching them," I said softly, leaning an inch into his warmth. "She’s getting fast."

He smiled against my hair, but after a moment, the tension in his shoulders tightened. He didn't pull away, but he reached around me to set a heavy leather folder on the mahogany desk.

"The Silverfang Pack is hosting a territorial summit next week on neutral ground," Magnus said. His tone was gentle, but the weight behind it was unmistakable. "My father is attending. The Lycan King doesn't leave the capital unless high border treaties are on the table. That means every regional Alpha is required to be there. It's governance, Saoirse. We can't avoid it."

I looked down at the dossier. My fingers turned the first page, scanning the formal list of pack delegates and regional representatives.

Then my eyes caught the line halfway down the roster.

*Nightshade Pack. Alpha Aiden Evans.*

The name landed in the quiet room like a lead weight dropped into still water.

For five years, Aiden had been a ghost from a past life. A cold floor. Blood soaking through denim. A mate bond violently ripped apart. For a second, a phantom chill grazed the back of my neck, but beneath my ribs, something else stirred—a deep, low vibration from my dormant wolf that felt less like fear and more like a growl.

Magnus stayed still. He didn't offer empty platitudes, and he didn't push. He just stood there, his thumb resting over my knuckles, giving me room to breathe.

I closed the folder with a quiet snap. The tremor in my chest was gone.

"I'll go," I said, my voice steady and clear. "But I'll need to bring Aspyn. I won't leave her here without us."

Magnus didn't hesitate for a single second.

"She comes with us," he replied, his jaw hardening with absolute certainty. "A full royal guard detail on every flank. Buster stays with her at all times."

"Good," I whispered.

Magnus reached out, his fingers lightly brushing a strand of dark hair behind my ear. His silver eyes searched mine, fierce and endlessly patient.

I looked down at the dossier once more, completely calm. The man who had broken me would be in that hall, but I was no longer the bleeding girl who had crawled into the dark.
