Chapter 3

Marcus traveled through the night. I knew because I could smell the exhaustion on him when he found me—sweat, pine resin, the metallic tang of adrenaline long burned through.

I was sitting on the boundary stone, legs folded, watching the tree line where Lycan territory started. The air was different there. Heavier. Not threatening, just dense with authority.

He came out of the trees with his ceremonial coat torn at the shoulder and that leather ledger under his arm like it weighed more than it should.

He didn't speak right away. Just climbed the last few feet of loose shale, breathing hard, and set the ledger down on the flat stone beside me.

"You kept records," he said finally. His voice was hoarse. "So did I. I should have spoken sooner."

I looked at the ledger. Plain brown leather. Worn at the corners.

I opened it.

The first page was dated three years ago. October. Two weeks after Cassian had found me at the caravan wreck and brought me to Shadowvale. Marcus had written in neat, careful script: *Ward activation, north gate. Duration: 4 hrs. Visible fatigue. Subject declined medical.*

I turned the page.

*Ward reinforcement, eastern ridge. Duration: 6 hrs. Nosebleed at hour five. Subject completed task before reporting to healer.*

Another page.

*Emergency ward repair, river bend. Duration: 9 hrs overnight. Subject administered IV fluids by healer post-collapse. Alpha did not visit.*

Three years. Every single hour I had poured into those wards, cataloged in Marcus's clinical Beta shorthand like evidence in a trial that had never happened.

My thumb traced a line down the margin. Not a warding sigil this time. Just the ghost of one.

"Will you testify?" I asked.

Marcus didn't hesitate. "Yes."

I closed the ledger.

"Then I'm not running," I said. "I'm building a case."

---

Shadowvale burned while we walked.

I didn't see it. I felt it—a faint wrongness at the base of my skull, the phantom pressure of a border I'd held for three years unraveling faster than it should. Marcus felt it too. He kept looking east over his shoulder, jaw tight.

"Three nights," he said on the second day. "Grael hit the eastern grain stores the first night. Took out a supply cache the second. Last night he got close enough to wound twelve warriors."

"Grael," I repeated. The name meant nothing to me.

"Rogue King. Operates out of the northern wastes with a pack of about forty. Smart. Organized. He's been testing borders for years, waiting for one to fall." Marcus's mouth twisted. "Ours fell."

I thought about Ashlynn standing on that dais in her ceremonial furs, blood bright on her collarbone, smiling.

"Can she hold a ward?" I asked.

Marcus laughed. It was a bitter sound. "She can't hold a dinner conversation past the second course."

"And Cassian?"

"Cracking." Marcus said it flat. "His aura. You can see it when he shifts now—fur going dull at the edges, like tarnish on silver. He's been smelling things that aren't there. Sounds that don't exist. The wolf's rejecting what he did, and it's taking him down with it."

Good, I thought. I didn't say it out loud.

We reached the outer gates of Lycan territory by dusk on the third day.

They were not gates in the usual sense. No walls, no posted guards. Just two carved stones flanking a deer path, runes older than any pack I knew etched into the granite, and a stillness in the air that said very clearly: *you are seen.*

I shifted into human form, pulled my coat closed, and walked between the stones.

Marcus stayed in wolf form behind me, head low, submissive.

The guard came out of the trees without sound. Lycan, not wolf—I could tell by the size of him, the way he moved like gravity bent differently around his body. He looked at me, then at Marcus, then back at me.

"State your business."

"I'm a ward-weaver," I said. "I'm petitioning for formal audience under Pack Law statute forty-seven, governing Lycan jurisdiction over Alpha misconduct. I'm offering my gift to Lycan lands. In exchange, I require sanctuary and a tribunal."

The guard's expression didn't change. He pulled a small mirror from his belt—some kind of communication device, Lycan-made—and spoke into it softly.

Ten minutes later, a second Lycan arrived. Older. Sharper-dressed. He looked me over with the kind of skepticism I'd gotten used to.

"I'm Roderick Vane, Beta to Prince Darius," he said. "You're claiming sanctuary as a petitioner?"

"Yes."

"And you're accusing an Alpha of misconduct sufficient to warrant Lycan tribunal?"

"Public rejection of a fated mate. Theft of magical labor. Breach of the Luna Accord." I held his gaze. "I have documentation."

Roderick's eyes flicked to Marcus, still in wolf form, ledger strapped across his back in a leather harness.

"Follow me," Roderick said.

---

The great hall was not what I expected.

I'd imagined thrones, banners, the kind of ceremonial grandeur Cassian had always chased. This was different. Stone and firelight and a ceiling so high the shadows never quite reached it. Functional. Old. Built to last centuries, not impress visitors.

Darius Vane was mid-sentence when I walked in.

He stood at the center of a half-circle of advisors, gesturing at a map spread across a low table, his voice carrying easily across the space. He was tall—taller than Cassian, broader through the shoulders—and he moved with the kind of certainty that didn't need to announce itself.

And then my scent hit him.

He went completely still.

His head turned. Slowly. His nostrils flared. And something behind his eyes surged forward—something enormous and black and barely leashed.

Mate.

I felt it too. The pull. Instant. Undeniable. A recognition so deep it bypassed thought entirely and went straight to the wolf under my ribs, who lifted her head and said, yes, *him*, with a certainty I had never felt in three years with Cassian.

But I did not move.

I waited until his eyes met mine, and then I spoke.

"I'm Kaia Stone. I'm a ward-weaver. I'm offering my gift to Lycan lands in exchange for sanctuary and a formal tribunal against Alpha Cassian Black of Shadowvale." I paused. Let the next words land clean. "Tribunal first. Bond second. I will not be claimed while I am still owed justice."

The hall went silent.

Every advisor, every attendant, every wolf in that room went motionless.

Darius stared at me. His jaw worked once. Twice. His hands, I noticed, were curled into fists at his sides, knuckles white.

And then, very slowly, he inclined his head.

It was the smallest bow I had ever seen. Restrained to the point of pain.

"Granted," he said. His voice was rough. "All terms. Granted."

Somewhere in the back of the hall, I heard Roderick exhale.
