My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance Novel Cover

My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance

At exactly 9:47 p.m., my entire world shattered. Standing in the third row at the Mate Ceremony, I watched the double doors swing open. Damian, my fated mate of six years, walked right past me as if I were a stranger. Clinging to his arm was Paris Hart, flaunting a rounded belly and a cloying scent that made my dormant wolf flinch. Amidst the dead silence of two hundred pack members, Damian chose her, leaving me rejected and facing a dark, uncertain future.

Chapter 5

The creek was where they almost had me.

I'd memorized the eastern border years ago, back when Damian still let me sit in on territory briefings, back when he still called me Luna instead of nothing at all. I knew the gap in patrol coverage where two rogue lines overlapped badly, a stretch of frozen ground the Gammas always meant to fix and never did. I ran for it now, lungs burning, Buster's paws a steady drumbeat beside me in the snow.

A shape broke from the treeline ahead of me, cutting the angle, already shifted — eight feet of wolf where a man had been a breath before. He landed in the creek bed, blocking the only crossing shallow enough to take at a run.

I didn't slow down enough. I couldn't afford to.

Buster hit him first.

I don't know what came over that dog. I don't know what let sixty pounds of golden retriever launch himself at a rogue wolf twice his size and sink his teeth into the tendon behind its knee, but he did it, and the wolf went down snarling, and I was already past them, boots cracking through the ice at the creek's edge, water soaking through to my ankles, not stopping, not once, not even when I heard Buster yelp behind me.

"Buster!" My voice tore out of me before I could stop it.

He was up. He was running. Blood on his muzzle that wasn't his own.

We hit the boundary line together — an old iron marker half-buried in frost, older than Damian, older than his father — and the moment my foot crossed it, the two rogues still standing simply stopped. They stood at the edge of Blackthorn land, chests heaving, and did not follow.

No Council authorization. No jurisdiction past the line. Damian's reach ended exactly where the marker did.

I didn't stop to be grateful. I ran until the trees swallowed the sound of them entirely.

The cabin sat in a clearing two miles past the border, a hunter's shack with a padlock I broke with a rock and hands that wouldn't stop shaking. Inside: a cot, a dead stove, dust thick enough to taste. I bolted the door behind us and slid down against it, Buster pressed to my side, both of us breathing like we'd swum a mile underwater.

Then I took out the vial.

STOP TAKING THESE, in my father's careful, slanted hand. I held it up to the grimy window light and studied it — clear liquid, faint bitter smell — and then I dug through my coat pocket for the one I'd palmed from under Damian's table weeks ago, the one I'd stored with fourteen others in a torn sock like it might mean something someday.

I held them side by side.

Same glass. Same seal. Same smell, sharp and clean and wrong, the smell I'd breathed in from a water glass every single morning of my life without once asking why.

Not medicine. Never medicine.

A leash.

Damian's drawer wasn't full of sedatives for pack business, the way I'd assumed. It was full of the exact compound my father had been feeding me since I was old enough to hold a cup. Chandler supplied it. Damian used it. And I had swallowed it every day for twenty-three years, believing I was simply ordinary, simply human-scented, simply *less* — when someone, somewhere, had built an entire architecture just to keep me that way.

I set the vial marked STOP TAKING THESE on the floorboards and brought my heel down on it.

The glass gave with a small, brittle crunch.

And something in my chest answered it.

Not pain. Not the cold hollow I'd carried since the mark went dead. Warmth — sudden, gold, blooming behind my ribs like a match catching in a dark room, a pressure I had no name for because I had never, not once in my life, felt it before.

*I am here.*

The voice wasn't mine. It moved through me anyway, low and certain, curling around the empty places Damian had drained hollow one aura-feeding at a time.

*I have always been here.*

I pressed both hands flat against my sternum and did not breathe for a long moment. Buster whined and pushed his head into my lap, and I realized my whole body was trembling, not from cold, not from the run — from something waking up that had slept my entire life.

I didn't have time to sit with it.

I found the address again, the border-town intermediary my father's contact had named — a she-wolf who ran a supply post and owed Hugh Cooper a debt older than me. I sent the message through her network with hands that had finally, finally stopped shaking.

*Hugh Cooper's daughter. Pocket watch. I have stopped taking them.*

Then I waited.

Six hours. The light through the grimy window shifted from gray to graying dark, and I sat with Buster's head on my knee and the golden warmth pulsing steady under my ribs, and I did not let myself hope, because hope was a thing Damian had taught me not to survive.

At the sixth hour, headlights swept once across the trees outside — and cut.
