My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance Novel Cover

My Alpha Rejected Me Before Stealing My Inheritance

At exactly 9:47 p.m., my entire world shattered. Standing in the third row at the Mate Ceremony, I watched the double doors swing open. Damian, my fated mate of six years, walked right past me as if I were a stranger. Clinging to his arm was Paris Hart, flaunting a rounded belly and a cloying scent that made my dormant wolf flinch. Amidst the dead silence of two hundred pack members, Damian chose her, leaving me rejected and facing a dark, uncertain future.

Chapter 2

Paris moved into the Luna quarters the way a storm moves into a valley — fast, total, and without apology.

By the second morning, every drawer that used to hold my sweaters held hers. My side of the closet was empty except for wire hangers swinging where dresses used to be. She'd taken the jewelry box too — the one Hugh gave me for my twenty-first birthday — and I found it later on her vanity, repurposed to hold her earrings, my grandmother's pearl studs pushed to the back like clutter.

She installed scent-diffusers in every room. Vanilla and something cheap underneath it, something I still couldn't name, thick enough to coat the back of my throat when I walked in to collect the laundry. My wolf — what was left of her — recoiled from it every time, a small flinch under my ribs that I'd learned to ignore.

I was folding towels in the hallway when Paris called my name, sweet as syrup. "Catherine. Come look at this."

She was holding the photograph from my old nightstand. Me and Damian, the night of our bonding ceremony, his mouth still against my throat, my hand fisted in his shirt like I never wanted to let go. I remembered exactly how that night felt. Warm. Certain. Stupid.

Paris turned the frame side to side, examining it with the bored expression of someone flipping through a magazine in a waiting room. "You look happy here," she said. "Sad, really." Then she dropped it, face-down, into the waste bin beside her feet. The glass cracked. She didn't even look at me when she did it.

"Take the rest of this to storage," she said, nodding at a box of my old things. "And don't dawdle. I'm tired."

I carried the box down two flights of stairs, and at the bottom, alone, I stopped and pulled the photograph out from under a broken picture hook and a pair of shoes I no longer owned. The glass had sliced a thin line across Damian's face. I didn't fix it. I wrapped the frame in a dish towel and tucked it deep inside Buster's dog bed, under the stuffing, the one place in that house Paris hadn't touched and never would.

That night at dinner, Paris stood and tapped her wine glass with a spoon.

"I have an announcement," she said, glowing, one hand pressed to the curve of her belly. "Damian and I are having a pup."

The hall erupted — congratulations, toasts, someone's chair scraping back to embrace her. Damian rose beside her, put his hand over hers on her stomach, and said something about the future of Blackthorn, about strength renewed, about a new era. I stood at the sideboard with a wine bottle in my hand and poured for wolves who used to call me Luna and now looked through me like I was part of the furniture.

I didn't spill a drop.

But that night, in the kennel wing, I pressed my face into Buster's fur and let myself say it — just once — the name Damian and I had picked out together, back when we still believed we'd get to use it. I said it into his fur where no one could hear. Then I buried it, the way I'd buried everything else, and I didn't say it again.

The days blurred into a rhythm after that. Scrub, serve, kneel, disappear. But underneath the rhythm, I was watching.

I learned which drawers Damian left unlocked and which ones he didn't bother locking at all, because who would dare go through an Alpha's things. I learned the exact bitter-clean scent of the vials — the same one my father used to put in my water glass every morning of my life — and confirmed, vial by vial, that they matched. Seven. Then eleven. Then fifteen, lined up under my cot in a torn sock, and I still didn't know what they meant. Only that my wolf, quiet as she was, seemed to lift her head every time I found another one, like something in her recognized the smell of her own cage.

Then Paris made her mistake.

"Clean the study," she told me, examining her nails. "Alpha's private one. I've already been through it — there's nothing left worth stealing. Consider it a lesson."

I went in expecting exactly that. Instead, behind the false panel I'd found years ago as Luna, hidden where Paris hadn't thought to look, I found a second set of ledgers. Territory-share valuations. My name at the top of every page. Absorption projections in Damian's own handwriting, and beneath them, a Council petition draft — dated three weeks before the Mate Ceremony.

Three weeks before he ever said the word reject.

My hands were steady when I took out my phone. I photographed every page. Then I put the ledgers back exactly where I'd found them, closed the panel, and walked out of that study without disturbing a single object — the same way I'd learned to walk out of every room in that house.

Like I'd never been there at all.
