Chapter 1

The mate bond snapped at 2:14 on a Saturday afternoon, right between the third and fourth words of Jace’s vow.

We stood on the raised dais of the Ironclad ceremonial grounds. Allied packs watched through the live mind-link broadcast. I wore the white dress I had spent three weeks sewing by hand in my damp Omega quarters.

Jace stopped speaking mid-sentence.

He didn't look at me. Without a word, Alpha Jace Black turned his back on the altar and walked down the stone steps toward the warrior ranks. He stopped in front of Gamma Angelina Gomez.

Before three hundred pack members, Jace pulled Angelina into his chest and buried his face in the crook of her neck. He inhaled deeply, drinking in her sharp scent of crushed cedar and heat.

"This," Jace’s voice boomed through the open broadcast link, rough and shameless. "Angelina smells like home. She smells like my true fate. Everlee’s scent means nothing to me."

A cold crack slammed through my chest, sharp as breaking glass. The thin, tentative bond we shared went completely dead. My skin turned to ice where his claiming mark was supposed to go.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I pressed my fingers flat against my sternum, right over the folded paper tucked inside my bodice. It was an ultrasound of our six-week-old pup. Jace didn't know about it. Now, he never would.

I held my head high and walked off the platform.

Ten minutes later, in the corridor behind the main hall, I caught the scent of cedar and musk. Jace was leaning against the wall, talking to his Beta, Marcus Webb. He hadn't bothered to close his mind-link channel. His voice echoed directly into my skull.

"She’s dead weight, Marcus," Jace said, laughing coldly. "No wolf. No rank. No value. Angelina is the mate I actually want. What happened out there wasn't a betrayal. It was a correction."

Marcus shifted uncomfortably. "She served you for four years, Jace."

"And that’s all she was good for," Jace snapped.

I didn't stay to hear more. I slipped down the back stairs and headed for the servants' wing.

That night, alone in my small room, I sat on my cot with my old Healer journal open on my knees. I had given up my placement at the Silverveil Academy years ago just to stay by Jace’s side. What a fool I had been.

I took the ultrasound from my dress and set it on the yellowed page. As my fingertips brushed the tiny white shape of my child, something inside me tore open.

It wasn't grief.

Deep under my ribs, beneath four years of forced Omega silence, a massive presence surged. It hit me like an electric shock. A raw, furious snarl echoed through my veins. It wasn't a whimpering pup. It was huge, heavy, and ancient, clawing violently against the walls of my mind.

My wolf.

She was finally waking up. And she was murderous.

I drew in a sharp breath, gripping the edge of the small wooden table as my eyes burned silver-hot for three seconds. The sensation passed, leaving my blood humming with dangerous heat. I picked up a pen. In the margins of my herb charts, I wrote down every Ironclad border patrol schedule I had memorized over the past two years.

The pack victory feast took place forty-eight hours later.

The Great Hall smelled of roasted meat and pine smoke. I stood near the heavy double doors, watching. Angelina sat beside Jace at the head table. At her hip, pinned to her leather belt so the fire caught the metal, was a custom-forged silver pendant. It was shaped like the Ironclad crest—a piece meant strictly for a Luna. Jace had commissioned it from the pack's royal metalsmith.

When Jace spotted me standing near the entrance, his jaw tightened. His eyes flashed red.

*"Sit down and shut your mouth, Everlee,"* his Alpha tone cracked across the hall like a whip.

The supernatural command hit me square in the chest, heavy as an iron beam meant to force me to my knees. The air left my lungs. Wolves at the nearby tables dropped their heads involuntarily.

Inside me, my awakened wolf roared. She slammed her strength against the command, snapping Jace's pressure like dry kindling.

I didn't kneel. I didn't even flinch.

Under the shocked stares of the entire pack, I reached behind my neck. I unclasped the silver mating pendant Jace had given me two years ago when he first claimed I would be his Luna.

I walked straight up to the high table, my boots clicking against the flagstones. Jace’s eyes widened slightly as I stopped in front of him.

Without breaking eye contact, I dropped the pendant directly onto his silver plate. It landed with a sharp *clink*.

"Keep it," I said quietly.

I turned and walked out of the hall before anyone could draw a breath.

At midnight, the Great Hall was dark and silent. I slipped back inside. The silver pendant still sat abandoned on the empty table where I had left it. I picked it up and shoved it into my coat pocket.

It wasn't a souvenir. It was leverage. A shattered pendant left beside a blood-soaked ultrasound would make everything crystal clear when the time came.

Next to the pendant, I tucked a folded slip of paper. On it, I had written the name of an extremely rare mountain root that only grew three territories to the east. It was an obscure remedy from my Healer training. If Jace thought I was dying of fever, he would have to drive out to get it himself.

I crept down to the narrow stone corridor outside the Healer's den. A shadow leaned against the brick wall near the rear exit.

Delta Soren Vale pushed off the wall as I approached, smelling of motor oil and cold night air.

"Soren," I whispered.

He looked down at me, his jaw tight. "Everlee. You shouldn't be wandering around."

"Will your truck run in twenty-four hours?" I asked.

Soren didn't ask questions. He reached into his heavy canvas jacket, pulled out a brass ignition key, and pressed it into my hand. His fingers closed over mine for just a second.

"Parked behind the old grain silo," Soren muttered, glancing toward the courtyard where Jace's guards were patrolling. "Fuel tank is full. Don't look back."
