Chapter 4

The news came from Marcus.

I didn't expect to see Shadowvale's Beta standing in Nighthollow's council room, but there he was—shoulders squared, jaw tight, looking like a man who'd made a choice he couldn't unmake. Franklin stood across from him, arms crossed, listening.

"Alexander's hired rogue trackers," Marcus said. His voice was clipped, efficient. "They found her location three days ago. He's organizing a contingent. He'll be at your border by tomorrow."

My stomach dropped. I pressed my palm flat against my belly without thinking. The pup shifted under my hand—awake, restless.

Franklin's expression didn't change. "How many warriors?"

"Eight. Maybe ten." Marcus glanced at me briefly, then back to Franklin. "He's not thinking clearly. His wolf's deteriorating faster now. The pack sees it. His aura cracks during training. His Alpha tone—" He stopped. "It's failing."

I thought about Alexander's voice the night he rejected me. The absolute certainty in it. The way every wolf had flinched when he spoke the vow.

Now his voice was failing.

Something in my chest twisted. Not sympathy. Something colder.

"He'll demand her return," Marcus continued. "He'll use what's left of his Alpha tone. He thinks—" He looked at me directly this time. "He thinks you'll come back if he commands it."

Franklin's jaw tightened slightly. "He's wrong."

"I know," Marcus said quietly. "But he doesn't."

Franklin turned to me. His grey eyes were steady, unreadable. "You don't have to be there. I can handle this."

My wolf stirred. She didn't like the idea of hiding. Neither did I.

"No," I said. My voice came out stronger than I felt. "I'll be there."

Franklin studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded once. "All right."

The next afternoon, I stood at Nighthollow's southern border with Franklin beside me and a line of his patrol wolves spread out behind us. The air was cold and still. Snow stretched in every direction, unmarked except for the scent markers that divided Shadowvale territory from Nighthollow.

I smelled them before I saw them. Shadowvale wolves. The scent hit me like a memory I didn't want—familiar and wrong all at once.

Then they appeared through the trees. Alexander at the front, still in human form, flanked by eight warriors. His black coat hung loose on his shoulders. His face was harder than I remembered, leaner. His eyes found me immediately.

Something in his expression cracked open. Relief. Desperation. I didn't know which.

He stopped ten feet from the border. His warriors stopped with him.

"Alina." His voice was rough. "You need to come home."

I didn't answer. My wolf was very still inside me, watching.

Alexander took a step closer. "I know you're angry. I know I—" He stopped. Started again. "My wolf is dying without you. The bond—"

"There is no bond," I said quietly.

His jaw clenched. "You're my mate. You're carrying my pup. You belong in Shadowvale."

"I belonged in Shadowvale," I said. "You told me I didn't. In front of everyone."

His hands fisted at his sides. "I made a mistake."

"You made a choice."

Something desperate flickered across his face. He straightened. His shoulders squared. I saw it coming before he spoke—the shift in his posture, the breath he took.

Alpha tone.

"Alina Morrison," he said, and his voice carried that old command, that weight that used to press against my chest and make my wolf drop instinctively. "I am your Alpha. I am ordering you to return to Shadowvale. Now."

The command washed over me like water over stone.

I felt nothing.

No pull. No compulsion. No instinct to obey. My wolf didn't even stir. She just watched him with something that might have been pity.

I held his gaze. I didn't speak. I didn't need to.

The silence stretched. Alexander's expression shifted—confusion first, then disbelief, then something that looked like fear.

"Alina—" he started.

Franklin stepped forward.

He didn't shift. He didn't raise his voice. He just moved—one step, two—and the air itself changed.

His Lycan aura expanded outward like a wave of pressure so immense it bent the space around him. I felt it even standing beside him—not oppressive, but vast. Ancient. Absolute.

Alexander's warriors staggered. One of them dropped to his knees. Another shifted involuntarily, his wolf bursting free in a panic response.

Alexander himself went rigid. His knees buckled. He fought it—I saw him fight it, saw every muscle in his body lock against the instinct—but his body didn't care what he wanted.

He dropped.

Knees in the snow. Head bowed. Submission.

Not because Franklin forced him. Because his wolf recognized what Alexander's pride refused to: he was outmatched in every way that mattered.

Franklin's voice, when he spoke, was quiet and unhurried. "Alina is under Nighthollow's protection. She is not your mate. She is not your Luna. She owes you nothing."

Alexander's hands were shaking. He kept his head down.

"If you cross this border again without invitation," Franklin continued, "I will consider it an act of war. Do you understand?"

A long, terrible silence.

Then Alexander nodded. Once. Barely.

Franklin stepped back. His aura retracted, and the pressure lifted. Alexander's warriors scrambled to pull him to his feet. He swayed slightly, his face pale, his eyes fixed on the ground.

He didn't look at me again.

Franklin's patrol captain moved forward. "We'll escort you back to the border marker," he said. Not a suggestion.

Alexander turned. His warriors followed. They disappeared into the trees the way they'd come, and the forest swallowed them whole.

I stood there in the snow, my hand pressed flat against my belly, and I felt the pup shift under my palm—alive, safe, mine.

Franklin turned to me. His grey eyes were steady. "Are you all right?"

I nodded. I didn't trust my voice yet.

He waited. Didn't push.

Finally I said, very quietly, "His voice didn't work."

"No," Franklin agreed. "It didn't."

"Why?"

"Because you're not his anymore," Franklin said simply. "Your wolf knows it. His wolf knows it. The bond is gone, Alina. He can't command what he doesn't hold."

I looked at the place where Alexander had knelt. The snow was disturbed there, trampled. Evidence.

"He'll go back to Shadowvale," I said.

"Yes."

"And his pack will know."

Franklin nodded. "They'll know their Alpha knelt at a foreign border and couldn't bring his Luna home. They'll know his aura is cracking and his voice is failing." He paused. "They'll know he's not strong enough to hold the title."

I closed my eyes. I should have felt something—triumph, maybe, or vindication. I felt tired.

"Come on," Franklin said quietly. "Let's go back."

We walked back through the snow, side by side, and behind us the border stood silent and undisturbed.
