Chapter 1

The bond broke on a Tuesday evening, at the edge of a pine forest in the Cascades, when I heard my mate's voice say my grief was meaningless.

I had come to the mountain lodge to bury my third child. Not literally—there was nothing to bury. Just the absence of a heartbeat where one had briefly, stubbornly tried to exist. Camille had stopped the hemorrhaging herself, her hands steady and practiced, her face arranged into professional sorrow. I had thanked her. I had actually thanked her.

I was walking the forest on my second evening because the lodge walls were too small for what I was carrying. The pines were dark and close, the air wet with coming rain. And then I caught it—cedar and iron, Killian's scent, moving upwind through the trees. Familiar enough to make my chest ache on reflex. But layered underneath it, something floral and foreign that my wolf stirred at, confused.

I followed without deciding to.

They were on a private trail thirty yards into the pines. Killian walked slowly, his hand resting on the small of Camille's back—low, steady, the kind of touch that comes from habit. She was very pregnant. Her laugh carried through the cold air before his words did.

'Every pregnancy terminated before it could threaten the plan.' His voice was quiet, almost gentle. 'The wolfsbane worked perfectly. Camille's pup will be my sole heir. Undisputed.'

Camille made a small, satisfied sound. 'And Adelynn?'

'She mourns what was never meant to survive.'

I pressed my back against a pine trunk and did not breathe.

Inside me, my wolf went absolutely still. Not dormant—not yet. But she curled inward, like something folding itself away from a wound too large to process. I felt her go quiet in a way she had never gone quiet before, and I understood, with the cold clarity of a person whose body has already accepted what the mind is still refusing, that she was beginning to die.

I walked back to the lodge on legs I could not feel. I sat on the edge of the bed and called Elsie. When she answered, I heard my own voice from a very great distance: 'Come now. Don't ask me anything until you get here.'

She arrived in four hours. I could see the fury in her the moment she stepped through the door—contained, barely, in the set of her shoulders and the way her jaw was working. I told her everything in two sentences. She was back out the door before I finished the second.

I should have stopped her. I didn't move fast enough.

By the time I reached the private cabin, it was already done. Two of Camille's enforcers had Elsie pinned against the far wall, one of them with a knee across her spine. She had shifted to defend herself—her wolf was small and fast and furious—and she had gotten one of them across the face before Killian's voice dropped into the Alpha tone.

'Elsie. Stop resisting.'

The command hit her like a physical blow. I watched her muscles lock. I watched her wolf go rigid against her will, every instinct screaming to fight and her body simply unable to obey it. She took the rest of the beating without moving. When they finally stepped back, she was on the floor, one shoulder at a wrong angle, blood on her temple.

Killian stood by the window and watched with his arms crossed.

The last thread of something I had been holding for eighteen years snapped so cleanly I almost heard it.

My wolf did not go quietly. She released one low, mournful sound inside my chest—not a howl anyone else could hear, just a vibration behind my sternum, the sound of something ending. I pressed both hands flat against my chest and held it in. Then I looked around the room and I started memorizing.

Two enforcers. Names I didn't know yet, but faces I would not forget. A shelf on the far window with four glass vials, pale green, stoppered with cork. Wolfsbane—I knew the color. Camille's handwriting on a small label I couldn't read from the doorway. The date already burning itself into my memory: November fourteenth.

Killian looked at me and understood that I had heard everything.

What followed was efficient. Camille produced scratches on her own forearm and a torn piece of my clothing she had clearly kept for exactly this purpose. She told Killian I had tried to harm her pup. He accepted it without a single question. He did not look at me when he gave the enforcers the order to escort me back to Ironveil.

The great hall was full when we arrived. The entire pack, assembled on Killian's command, two hundred wolves watching from the stone floor and the gallery above. I stood in the center of it and felt the bond-mark on the side of my neck—never formally placed, but always present, a warmth I had lived inside for seven years—begin to go cold.

Killian stood on the Alpha's dais. He did not hesitate.

'I, Killian Cruz, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Adelynn Gardner, as my mate.'

The cold became a void. My wolf went completely silent. My knees hit the stone floor and I did not feel the impact.

The hall was absolutely still.

I was still conscious. That surprised me. My vision had grayed at the edges and my hands were shaking and the place where the mark had been felt like a door standing open in an empty room—but I was still there. Still thinking.

The wolfsbane vials. The dates. The supply chain. The names.

I looked up at Killian from the floor. I made my voice flat and very clear.

'I heard everything at the cabin. I have the dates. I have the names. And I will survive this.'

His jaw tightened.

He gave the order to take me to the cell.

I stood up on my own. My legs held. I walked ahead of the enforcers, already counting the paces to the door, already cataloguing every exit in the room.
