My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna Novel Cover

My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna

At 8:47 on New Year's Eve, Damian binds the Luna Mantle around Lilith Sorrell's throat, naming her Luna-elect of Ironveil—while I stand in the crowd in a dress I mended myself, waiting for my name. The mate bond in my chest goes cold, then hollow. My wolf screams where no one can hear. Silver light flickers beneath my skin, bright enough to make Elder Voss's granddaughters step back. I hide it. Across the hall, Lilith's practiced shock can't mask the cold satisfaction in her eyes. The Alpha chose wrong—and I will make him feel it.

Chapter 4

The sound came first—engines cutting through the wind, low and powerful, a rhythm that didn't belong in the empty white.

I didn't open my eyes. I couldn't. My body had stopped listening to me somewhere in the last hour, gone heavy and distant, like I was sinking into the frozen ground one slow breath at a time. The fireworks had stopped. The cold had stopped hurting. Even my wolf—silent for so long I'd almost forgotten what her voice felt like—had stopped whimpering.

Then headlights cut through my closed eyelids, twin beams so bright they turned the darkness red.

The engines stopped. A door opened. Footsteps on ice, careful, deliberate. More than one person. Voices I didn't recognize, low and clipped, the kind of controlled urgency that meant someone was giving orders without raising their voice.

I tried to move. My fingers twitched. That was all.

Then the wind shifted.

I felt it before I understood it—something in the air changing, a scent I didn't have a name for, sharp and clean and impossibly warm. And underneath it, something else. Something that made the cold in my chest flicker, just once, like embers someone had breathed on after they'd gone dark.

A man's voice, very close, very quiet: 'Bring the medic. Now.'

Footsteps again, faster this time. Hands on my shoulders, my wrist, checking for a pulse I wasn't sure I still had. Someone said something about hypothermia. Someone else said something about wolfsbane. The words blurred together, meaningless, just sound.

Then the pain started.

It wasn't cold this time. It was heat—sudden, brutal, rising from somewhere so deep inside me I didn't know I had a place that deep. It clawed up through my ribs, through my spine, through every nerve that had gone numb in the last three hours, and it burned.

I gasped. The first real breath I'd taken in I didn't know how long.

The hands on my shoulders pulled back. Someone swore. The medic—I think it was the medic—said something sharp and fast in a language I didn't recognize, and then the heat wasn't just inside me anymore.

It was everywhere.

My skin split.

Not tore—split, like fabric pulled too tight, like something underneath had been waiting too long and finally couldn't wait anymore. Light poured out of me, silver-white and blinding, bright enough that I saw it through my closed eyelids, bright enough that the voices around me went silent all at once.

My wolf surged.

Not the small, pale creature I'd known for five years. Not the quiet, whimpering thing that had gone silent under the wolfsbane. This was something else. Something enormous. Something that had been crushed down so small and so long that when it finally tore free, it didn't emerge—it detonated.

The aura hit first. I felt it leave me in a wave, felt the snow flatten in a perfect circle around my body, felt every person standing near me stagger back like they'd been shoved. Then the shift took me—not gentle, not gradual, but all at once, my bones rearranging themselves with a series of cracks that should have hurt but didn't, my body stretching and expanding and becoming something I'd never been before.

I opened my eyes.

I was standing. On four legs. In a wolf form that towered over the humans crouched around me—no, not humans. Lycans. I could smell it now, the difference between them and the wolves I'd known my whole life, something older and stronger and infinitely more patient.

One of them—a man in tactical gear with a silver insignia on his chest—was on one knee, head bowed, neck bared. Submitting. To me.

Steam rose from my coat. I looked down and saw fur—silver-white, luminous, catching the distant glow of the city lights like it had been woven from moonstone. My paws were massive, claws sunk deep into the ice. My breath came out in clouds.

I turned my head.

A man stood a few feet away, taller than the others, dark hair dusted with snow, eyes locked on mine. He wasn't kneeling. He wasn't bowing. He was just standing there, completely still, like he was afraid that if he moved I'd vanish.

'Easy,' he said. His voice was quiet. Careful. Nothing like the Alpha-tone I'd spent five years flinching from. 'You're safe. I've got you.'

I stared at him. My wolf—this enormous, blazing creature I didn't recognize—stared at him. And something in his scent, in the way he held himself, in the way his wolf was howling beneath his skin in a language I somehow understood, made the last thread of tension in my body snap.

I collapsed.

The shift reversed in a shudder that moved through my entire body, bones compressing, fur dissolving, until I was human again—naked, freezing, my skin still faintly glowing with residual aura. I hit the ice.

He caught me.

His coat was around me before I registered he'd moved. Warm. Heavy. Smelling like cedar and something else, something I didn't have a name for. He lifted me—actually lifted me, like I weighed nothing—and I felt his arms lock around me, steady and absolute.

'Get the convoy moving,' he said. Not loud. He didn't need to be. 'Now.'

I tried to speak. My lips moved. Nothing came out.

He looked down at me, and his expression did something I didn't understand—softened, maybe, or broke, just slightly, like he'd been holding something in for a very long time and didn't know how to let it go.

He reached into his jacket with his free hand and pulled out a photograph. Faded. Creased. A nursery. A crib. A small silver blanket.

He looked at the photograph. Then at me. Then back at the photograph.

'I found you,' he said quietly. 'I finally found you.'

The SUV door opened. Warmth poured out. He carried me inside, set me down on the seat with a gentleness that felt impossible from someone his size, and wrapped another blanket around my shoulders.

The convoy started moving. The overpass disappeared behind us, swallowed by the storm.

I closed my eyes. The bond in my chest—Damian's bond, the one I'd been trying to sever for two days—pulsed once, faint and cold and distant.

Then it went quiet.

Completely quiet.

Like it had never been there at all.
