My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna Novel Cover

My Alpha Poisoned Me for His New Luna

At 8:47 on New Year's Eve, Damian binds the Luna Mantle around Lilith Sorrell's throat, naming her Luna-elect of Ironveil—while I stand in the crowd in a dress I mended myself, waiting for my name. The mate bond in my chest goes cold, then hollow. My wolf screams where no one can hear. Silver light flickers beneath my skin, bright enough to make Elder Voss's granddaughters step back. I hide it. Across the hall, Lilith's practiced shock can't mask the cold satisfaction in her eyes. The Alpha chose wrong—and I will make him feel it.

Chapter 2

By nine the next morning, Lilith had already moved into the Alpha's study.

I found her there when Damian summoned me — curled in his reading chair in a silk robe that wasn't hers, a robe I recognized because I'd folded it myself a hundred times, back when it still smelled like me instead of her. She had a mug of tea between her hands, steam curling up past her face, and she looked, for all the world, like she'd lived there for years instead of one night.

"Claire." She said my name like she was tasting it, testing whether it still had any weight. "Good, you're up."

I didn't sit. I stood just inside the doorway with my hands folded in front of me, the posture I'd perfected over five years of being spoken to and not with.

"There's a bakery," Lilith said, glancing at Damian instead of me, always at Damian, "on Route 9. Human place. They do this brioche with the burnt-honey glaze — I used to dream about it when I was away." She gave a small, apologetic laugh, the kind she'd perfected for an audience. "I know it's terribly far. And only in the mornings, before they sell out. I'd hate to ask, but—"

"But you're asking," I said quietly.

Her eyes flicked to me then, cool under the lashes. "I suppose I am."

Damian hadn't looked at me since I walked in. He was standing by the window with his arms crossed, jaw tight, and I watched him roll his shoulders once — that small, private tell I'd memorized without meaning to, the one that always came right before a command.

"Claire." His voice dropped, and the Alpha-tone slid underneath it like a blade under silk. "Go get the pastries. On foot."

The bond seized before I could even process the words. It closed around my spine like a fist, cold and absolute, and my wolf — already raw, already grieving — threw herself against the inside of my ribs with a snarl that had nowhere to go. *No.* I felt her scrabble for purchase, felt her claws rake uselessly against a wall neither of us controlled. Alpha-tone doesn't ask. It doesn't negotiate. It reaches into the base of you, the animal part, and turns you toward the door like a compass finding north.

My feet were already moving before my mind caught up.

"Damian," I said, and even compelled, even mid-turn, I kept my voice level. "It's negative twenty out there. There's a storm warning until midnight."

He didn't answer. He didn't have to. The command didn't need justification — that was the entire point of it.

Lilith sipped her tea and said nothing at all.

I walked out of the study with my body no longer entirely my own.

—

Ethan Cole was waiting in the corridor, a canteen held out in both hands like an offering. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

"For the walk," he said. "Hydration."

I took it because my hand reached for it before I'd decided to. I raised it to my lips.

The taste hit before the swallow did — that faint, metallic bitterness under the water, sharp and familiar in a way that turned my stomach. Wolfsbane. Diluted, careful, measured by someone who knew exactly what dose would suppress a shift without killing outright. I would know. I'd spent six months learning that exact math, kneeling beside Damian's bed with my own kit open on the floor, counting drops out of his blood one careful day at a time.

I looked at Ethan. Just looked, the way I'd looked at Damian the night before.

He stared at the floor. His throat worked once, like he might say something. He didn't.

I swallowed the rest of it anyway. There was no version of this where refusing changed anything — the command was already inside me, steering my hands, my feet, the whole animal architecture of my body toward the front door. I set the empty canteen down on the hallway table, gently, the way you set down something you don't want to break.

Damian was waiting by the door.

He reached out without a word and slid my coat off my shoulders. I felt the warmth leave with it. Then he took my phone from my back pocket, thumb brushing my hip like it meant nothing, like five years of my hands on his skin had never happened.

I stood there in a thin gray sweater and jeans. My wolf whimpered somewhere far beneath my skin, small and pale and furious, clawing at bars that wouldn't give.

Outside the window, the storm wasn't weather anymore. It was a wall — white, roaring, absolute, the kind of cold that didn't announce itself so much as promise something.

The bond pulsed once through my chest, patient, final, an order with no more patience left to give.

I stepped outside.
