Chapter 5

The announcement came through the pack notice board like everything else Carter wanted the entire pack to see.

**MATE CEREMONY — FORMAL LUNA INSTALLATION**

**Date: Three weeks hence**

**Location: Ironveil Great Hall**

**Attendance: Mandatory for all pack members. Invitations extended to all Alphas and elders of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.**

I read it twice. The words didn't change.

Around me, the pack house hummed with anticipatory energy. Warriors clapped Carter on the back in the hallways. Omegas whispered about decorations and seating arrangements. Skyla floated through the rooms with one hand resting on her belly, accepting congratulations like a queen already crowned.

I folded the notice and put it in my pocket.

Then I went to the healers' ward.

---

The supply room was empty at midday. I moved quickly—past the shelves of bandages and antiseptic, past the locked cabinet of controlled substances, to the loose stone in the back corner that no one but me knew was loose.

I pulled out the document case. It was heavier now than when I'd started. Signed dissolution petition. Witness statements. Supplement analysis with the purple-stained reagent vial. Photographs of my mother's destroyed grave. Nora's confession, recorded and transcribed.

I opened my notebook to a blank page and began drafting.

**Invocation of the Luna Blood Rite**

The rite was ancient—older than the current pack structures, older than most of the Alphas who would be sitting in that hall. It granted a marked Luna the legal right to demand public scent-verification of any pup claimed under her mate's bloodline. The language had to be precise. Unimpeachable. The kind of formal invocation that couldn't be dismissed or delayed once spoken aloud before witnesses.

I wrote for an hour. I crossed out lines. I rewrote. I checked the phrasing against the old pack law texts I'd been studying for three years.

When I finished, I read it through three times.

It would work.

I slipped the draft into the document case and replaced the stone exactly as I'd found it.

Three weeks. I had three weeks to memorize every word.

---

The days that followed were strange.

I moved through the pack house like a ghost—present, performing, invisible. I attended every Luna duty with meticulous correctness. I sat in on alliance meetings and took notes in my careful handwriting. I updated the healers' ward records. I organized the schedule for the kitchen omegas preparing for the ceremony.

I gave Carter and Skyla no grounds to restrict my access. No grounds to remove me from the guest list.

The mate-mark on my neck had stopped burning. The signed dissolution petition—still unprocessed, still sitting in Carter's desk drawer—had weakened the bond enough that his emotions arrived now as background noise rather than a flood. His elation over Skyla was there, distant and cold, like hearing music through a closed door.

I used the quiet to prepare.

Every night I sat at my desk with the Luna Blood Rite invocation in front of me. I memorized it line by line. I practiced the cadence, the pauses, the places where my voice would need to carry across a silent hall. Barnaby slept at my feet, his warmth a steady anchor.

I didn't sleep much. I didn't need to.

---

Five days before the ceremony, Nora came to my quarters after dark.

She knocked softly. I opened the door and found her standing in the hallway with a bottle of supplements in her hand—the weekly delivery she'd been making for three years.

I stepped aside. She came in.

I didn't say anything. I just walked to my desk and turned the healers' reagent test results toward her. The purple-stained vial sat beside the paper. The chemical analysis was clear. Unmistakable.

Nora looked at the results. Her face went pale.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

She sat down in the chair across from me. Her hands twisted in her lap.

"Three years," she whispered. "From the first month after the ceremony. Carter's orders. He said your wolf needed to stay dormant. That only Skyla could bear an heir with an awakened pup. He said it was for the pack's future."

I pulled out the small recording device I'd used to photograph the documents. I set it on the desk between us.

"Tell me everything," I said. "Start from the beginning."

She did.

When she finished, I turned off the recorder. I transcribed her confession in my notebook while she watched. When I was done, I looked up.

"When the time comes," I said, "your testimony will be required before the Lycan Council. Cooperation is the only protection I can offer you."

Nora nodded. Her eyes were red. "I'll testify. I should have—I should have said something years ago."

"Yes," I said. "You should have."

She left the supplements on my desk and walked out.

I threw the bottle in the trash.

---

The night before the ceremony, Skyla came to visit.

She wore white already—a long dress with lace at the sleeves, her hair loose and shining, one hand resting on her belly. She stood in my doorway and smiled.

"I wanted to see you before tomorrow," she said. Her voice was soft, almost kind. "I know this has been hard for you. But tomorrow everything will be official. The pack will finally have a real Luna. Someone who can actually give Carter an heir."

I sat in my chair with the document case on my lap. Barnaby pressed against my shins, a warm weight.

Skyla stepped inside. She looked around the Luna quarters—at the bare walls, the packed bags I hadn't bothered to hide, the emptiness I'd been living in for three years.

"You should be grateful," she continued. "Carter kept you this long out of pity. He could have rejected you completely years ago. But he's kind. He wanted to make sure you had somewhere to go."

I listened to the entire performance. I didn't interrupt. I didn't react.

When she finished, I looked up at her.

"I'll see you at the ceremony," I said.

Skyla's smile faltered. She'd expected something—begging, rage, tears. She got none of it.

She turned and left, her white dress trailing behind her.

I closed the door. I locked it.

Through the weakened bond, I felt a flicker of Carter's anticipation for tomorrow. The triumph he was already tasting. The certainty that everything he'd wanted was finally falling into place.

I felt nothing in response.

That absence wasn't grief. It was freedom, arriving early.

I opened the document case one last time. I pulled out the Luna Blood Rite invocation and read it through.

Every word was perfect.

I went to bed with Barnaby curled at my feet and the invocation memorized so deeply I could recite it in my sleep.

Tomorrow, the Ironveil great hall would be full. Every Alpha and elder in the Pacific Northwest. Witnesses everywhere.

Tomorrow, I would stand on that dais and speak the words that would detonate everything.

I closed my eyes.

I was ready.
