Chapter 3

Two days after they ground my mother's headstone to rubble, Skyla collapsed at dinner.

I was three seats down from Carter at the long table, picking at roasted venison I couldn't taste. The senior warriors and their mates filled the rest of the chairs. Conversation hummed around platters of food—pack politics, border patrols, the usual rhythm of an Ironveil evening meal.

Skyla sat beside Carter. She'd been laughing at something he said, her hand resting on his forearm, when her face went white.

She clutched her throat. Her chair scraped backward. A sound came out of her mouth—half gasp, half sob—theatrical and sharp enough to cut through every conversation at once.

"Wolfsbane," she choked out. Her eyes were wide, wet, fixed on Carter's face. "I can smell it. In the food. Someone—"

She looked directly at me.

Every head at the table turned.

Carter stood. His chair hit the floor. The bond flared—not with pain this time but with fury, white-hot and immediate, flooding into my chest before I could brace for it.

"Esme," he said. His voice dropped into Alpha tone. The command wrapped around my spine like a fist. "Stand."

I stood. My legs obeyed before my mind caught up.

Carter moved around the table. His hand closed around my wrist—not gently, not checking, just taking. He dragged me toward the door. My feet barely touched the ground. I heard chairs scraping. Voices rising. Skyla's soft weeping behind us.

No one followed.

He pulled me across the estate grounds. The grass was cold under my stumbling feet. The pack house lights fell away behind us. Ahead, the ornamental ice pond gleamed under the half-moon—a relic of the previous Alpha's paranoia, its floor lined with silver mesh to keep rogues from using the water as cover.

Carter stopped at the edge. His grip on my wrist tightened.

"You poisoned her," he said.

I didn't answer. There was no answer that would matter.

He hurled me forward.

I hit the water chest-first. The cold punched the air from my lungs. My hands went down, instinct trying to catch me, and touched the silver mesh. Pain exploded across my palms—immediate, searing, the kind of burn that doesn't stop when you pull away. I jerked back. My arms hit the mesh. My legs. The silver was everywhere, lining the bottom, and the water pressed me down into it.

I clawed at the stone rim. My fingers found purchase. I dragged myself toward the edge, my skin screaming, the freezing water pulling heat from my chest in brutal, sucking waves. My teeth chattered so hard I bit my tongue.

I looked up.

Carter stood on the bank, watching. His face was unreadable. The bond pulsed with his anger, steady and certain, like a heartbeat that had nothing to do with mine.

Footsteps crunched on the frost behind him. Skyla appeared at his shoulder, her face still pale but her breathing steady now. She touched his arm. Leaned close. Whispered something I couldn't hear.

Carter turned. He walked back toward the pack house with her.

He didn't look back.

I hauled myself over the rim. My arms gave out halfway. I collapsed on the frozen bank, shaking so hard my vision blurred. Silver burns striped my forearms in angry welts. The mate-mark on my neck blazed like someone had relit the brand.

I lay there until I could make my hands stop shaking. Until I could stand. Until I could walk.

No one came to check.

---

The next morning I forced myself to the training yard.

My arms were bandaged under my sleeves. The silver burns throbbed with every movement. I didn't care. I moved through the drills alone—forms, footwork, the basic sequences every pack member learned before their first shift. My wolf slammed against my ribs twice. I ignored her.

The warriors watched. I felt their eyes tracking me across the yard. None of them spoke. None of them approached.

When I finished, I walked to the equipment shed at the edge of the yard. It smelled like leather and oil and old sweat. First-aid kits lined the back shelf—standard pack stock, the kind that included basic healer reagents for field injuries.

I pulled one down. My hands were steady.

I took the two capsules from my coat pocket. Pale yellow. Slightly larger than standard iron supplements. I crushed one under the flat of a knife and mixed the powder into the reagent solution.

The liquid turned deep purple.

Wolfsbane concentrate.

I stared at the vial. The color didn't change. The chemistry didn't lie.

Three years. Three years of those capsules, filed under my name, dispensed by Carter's private healer. Three years of my wolf caged inside my ribs, silent and dormant, while the pack whispered that I was defective.

I sealed the sample in the document case with the rest of my evidence. I replaced the kit exactly where I'd found it. I walked back to the pack house.

My face gave nothing away.

---

Skyla's next move was elegant.

She began circulating word through the visiting pack delegates—carefully, privately, in the kind of conversations that happened over wine in the pack house sitting rooms. Esme Perry, the wolfless Luna, might not be what she seemed. There were questions about her background. Concerns about her loyalty. Hadn't anyone wondered why she never shifted? Why she had no wolf? What if she wasn't Ashford-born at all? What if she was a rogue plant, placed inside Ironveil to compromise its alliances from within?

The accusation was perfect. It weaponized every doubt the pack already had. It reframed Carter's cruelty as justified vigilance.

By the third day, the whispers had spread enough that Carter called a senior pack meeting.

I wasn't invited. I heard about it from an omega who cleaned the hall afterward.

Carter had forbidden his Beta Marcus from speaking in my defense. "Ongoing security concerns," he'd said. The phrase carried weight. It meant the accusation was being treated as credible. It meant I had no advocate left inside the pack's command structure.

Marcus had met my eyes once during the meeting, the omega told me. Then he'd looked away.

I stood in the empty records room and absorbed that information. No allies. Not one.

The bond pulsed—Carter's certainty, distant and cold.

I pressed my thumb against the mark on my neck. It didn't burn anymore. It just ached.

I pulled the document case from its hiding place behind the old ledgers. I added the purple-stained reagent vial to the stack. Signed dissolution petition. Witness statements. Supplement analysis. My mother's destroyed grave, documented in careful handwriting.

I was building something. I didn't know yet what it would be used for.

But I knew I would need it.
