Chapter 3

The Wagner Elders started their campaign three days after the Mating Moon Banquet.

I noticed it first at the pack dinner—a formal affair Drake's mother hosted twice monthly to maintain the illusion of pack unity. I arrived early, as I always did, and found my usual seat at the family table already occupied.

Ryleigh sat in my chair. She wore a dress the color of fresh cream, her hair swept up in a style I'd worn to the last Alpha summit. Drake's mother stood beside her, one hand resting on Ryleigh's shoulder in a gesture of casual ownership.

"Harper," Drake's mother said, her smile thin and precise. "We've made some adjustments to the seating. You understand."

I understood perfectly. I took the seat she indicated—three places down, wedged between a visiting Delta and the pack's elderly record-keeper. From this angle, I had a clear view of Ryleigh's profile. Of the way Drake's mother leaned in to murmur something that made Ryleigh laugh. Of Drake himself, arriving late, his hand finding Ryleigh's shoulder in a brief, familiar touch before he took his own seat.

The meal proceeded. Roasted venison. Root vegetables glazed with honey. Wine I did not drink.

Halfway through the main course, Drake's mother turned her attention to Ryleigh's wolf. "Such a beautiful coat," she said, her voice carrying across the table. "That silver-gray is quite rare. You must be very proud."

Ryleigh's smile was modest. Practiced. "Thank you, Luna Mother. My wolf has always been strong."

"As a wolf should be." Drake's mother's gaze slid toward me, brief and surgical. "A Luna who cannot shift can hardly be expected to understand what it means to lead a pack, of course. But I'm sure Harper does her best with what she has."

The table went quiet. Not shocked—this wasn't the first time my dormant wolf had been weaponized in public—but attentive. Waiting to see if I would react.

I set my fork down carefully. "The venison is excellent," I said to the record-keeper beside me. "Did the hunting party bring this in from the northern territory?"

The record-keeper, grateful for the redirect, launched into a detailed account of the hunt. I listened with apparent interest. I did not look at Drake's mother. I did not look at Ryleigh. I simply ate my meal and made polite conversation and let the moment pass like water over stone.

But inside my chest, my wolf pushed. Hard. Insistent. A pressure against my ribs that felt almost like claws.

I pressed back. Not to silence it. To tell it: *Not yet.*

---

The council meeting two days later was worse.

Drake's father opened with a proposal to "redistribute Luna Harper's diplomatic duties to wolves with functional instincts." He said it casually, as if suggesting a minor administrative adjustment. As if the alliances I had personally negotiated over three years—the treaties I had drafted, the territorial disputes I had mediated—were clerical tasks anyone could perform.

"The upcoming regional summit requires a Luna who can demonstrate pack strength," he continued, not looking at me. "We must consider whether Harper's... limitations... serve Ironveil's interests."

The Beta shifted in his seat. Uncomfortable but silent. The Gamma studied the table. No one spoke.

I sat perfectly still, my hands folded in my lap, my thumb pressing against the mate mark on my neck. The bond hummed faintly. Distant. Like something heard through water.

"I defer to the Alpha's judgment," I said quietly.

Drake's father smiled. "Of course you do."

The meeting continued. Border patrol schedules. Tribute allocations. A request from the eastern territory for additional healers. I contributed where appropriate. I took notes. I did not argue.

That evening, I sat at my desk and added both statements to my handwritten record. Dated. Verbatim. Drake's mother's remark about shifting. Drake's father's proposal to strip my duties. Every word preserved in ink.

My wolf surged again as I wrote, harder than it had at the dinner, pressing against the inside of my chest with an urgency that made my hand shake. I set the pen down and closed my eyes, breathing carefully.

*Not yet,* I told it again. *Soon. But not yet.*

It settled. Reluctant. Waiting.

---

The territorial boundary between Ironveil and Blackthorn Court land was a stretch of dense forest Drake had never bothered to patrol personally. Low-value, he'd called it once. Not worth an Alpha's time.

Which made it perfect.

I arrived at dawn, a sealed envelope tucked inside my healer's kit. The redirected tribute records. The names of three wolves I'd identified as Drake's paid silencers within the pack—wolves who'd been present at closed-door meetings, who'd carried messages I wasn't supposed to see, who'd looked away when Ryleigh wore Drake's scent like perfume.

Kieran stepped out of the tree line exactly on time. No guards. No ceremony. Just him, moving through the forest with the quiet efficiency of someone who didn't need to announce his rank.

His scent hit me first. White jasmine and winter steel. My wolf lurched toward it before I could stop the reaction, pressing so hard against my ribs I had to force myself to breathe evenly.

He noticed. His gaze dropped briefly to my chest, then returned to my face without comment.

I handed him the envelope. He opened it there, in the gray morning light, scanning the documents with the focus of someone who knew exactly what he was looking for.

"Three silencers," he said. "That's more than I expected."

"He's thorough," I replied.

Kieran folded the documents and produced a slim file from inside his jacket. "Alpha Graham," he said, handing it to me. "Drake's been negotiating a military alliance. Graham's reputation is documented. He treats she-wolves as disposable alliance currency. Blackthorn intelligence has testimony from two packs."

I took the file. My hands were steady. "How disposable?"

"Traded. Drugged. Handed over as payment for territorial concessions." Kieran's voice stayed level. Factual. "If Drake is building an alliance with him, you need to know what kind of wolf you're dealing with."

I opened the file. Read the first page. My stomach turned, but my expression didn't change. "Understood."

We stood there for a moment in the quiet forest. The boundary line between our territories was a narrow creek, water running cold and clear over smooth stones. Neither of us crossed it.

"Next exchange in two weeks," Kieran said. "Same location."

I nodded. He turned to leave, moving back toward the tree line with the same unhurried precision he'd arrived with.

My wolf surged toward his retreating scent. Not a gentle pull. A violent lurch, like something tethered too tightly suddenly straining against its bonds. I felt it in my throat, in my chest, in the hollow space behind my sternum where nothing had stirred for three years.

I stood at the boundary line after he'd gone, breathing carefully, waiting for the jasmine-and-steel scent to fade from my nose.

It took longer than it should have.

---

I found Ryleigh in my healing room that afternoon.

She stood at my workbench, reorganizing my wolfsbane antidote stores. The compounds I'd spent years perfecting. The treatments I knew with the precision of a healer who'd saved lives on border patrols, who'd treated poisoned warriors, who'd studied every variation of the toxin because it was the one thing I could control when everything else felt like it was slipping away.

Ryleigh looked up when I entered. Smiled pleasantly. "I thought I'd help," she said, holding up a vial of concentrated antidote. "You won't be needing these much longer, will you?"

I looked at her. At the vial in her hand. At the way she'd arranged my supplies—carelessly, without understanding the order I maintained, the system that let me find what I needed in an emergency without thinking.

At the way she stood in my space, wearing my authority like a borrowed coat.

I didn't answer. I simply walked to the workbench, took the vial from her hand, and returned it to its proper place.

Ryleigh watched me. Still smiling. "You're so particular about everything," she said softly. "It must be exhausting."

I met her gaze. Held it. "You can go now."

She left. I locked the door behind her and stood in my healing room, surrounded by the compounds I'd mixed with my own hands, and I thought about what she'd just told me.

She didn't know. She had no idea that by standing in this room, touching these stores, making that particular comment, she'd just confirmed something I'd only suspected.

That night, I added the interaction to my journal. Dated. Verbatim. And then I wrote a single note beneath it:

*She does not know what she just told me.*

My wolf stirred. Quiet. Patient. Waiting for the moment I would finally let it move.
