Chapter 4

The first message arrived on my third morning at Moonveil.

I was sitting on the porch with tea, watching Phoebe teach Buster to fetch, when my phone buzzed. An unknown number. A photograph.

Lilia, glowing in the main pack house sitting room—my sitting room—one hand resting on her belly, the other holding an ultrasound image toward the camera. The caption read: *Your Alpha's son. Strong. Perfect. Everything you couldn't give him.*

I stared at the screen for a long moment. Then I forwarded it to a folder I'd labeled "Evidence" and set the phone face-down on the table.

My grandmother appeared in the doorway behind me. She didn't ask. She'd taught me long ago that silence was often the sharpest question.

"She's moved into the pack house," I said quietly. "Grant's letting her play Luna."

"Of course he is." My grandmother settled into the chair beside me. "Weak men always choose the easiest path. And right now, you're not there to do the work for him."

I picked up my tea. The cup was warm against my palms. "She's sending messages. Taunting me."

"Good," my grandmother said plainly. "Let her talk. Arrogant wolves always tell you exactly how to destroy them."

Another message arrived that afternoon. This one was a photograph of the completed lakeside estate, sunlight glinting off those floor-to-ceiling windows. The caption: *Our home. Built with pack resources your bloodline was too weak to protect.*

I saved it. Catalogued it. Felt my wolf stir with something cold and patient.

By the end of the week, there were six messages. Each one more brazen than the last. Lilia standing beside Grant at a pack function, his hand on her waist. Lilia being addressed as "Future Luna" by visiting wolves who didn't know better. Lilia describing, in vivid detail, the marking ceremony planned for the Blood Moon Banquet.

She thought I was broken. Hiding. Too devastated to fight back.

She had no idea I was building a case that would bury her.

---

On the fourth night, my grandmother found me in the library.

I was surrounded by documents—the Beta's intelligence reports, the demoted warrior's financial records, Cedric Hale's legal brief on the Founder's Blood Right. My laptop screen glowed in the dim light, open to a timeline I'd been refining for days.

She stood in the doorway for a long moment, just watching. Then she crossed the room and closed my laptop with one firm hand.

"Enough," she said.

I looked up. "I'm not done—"

"You're avoiding." Her voice was not unkind, but it was unyielding. "You've built your case. You've gathered your evidence. You know what you need to do at that banquet. But you're still carrying the bond like a chain, and until you face what it's done to you, you'll walk into that hall diminished."

I opened my mouth to argue. Nothing came out.

She pulled a chair close and sat, her grey eyes—my eyes—locked on mine. "The mate bond is sacred. But sacred does not mean harmless. Every time Grant diminished you, every time he made you smaller, every time he poured his indifference and his contempt into that bond, your wolf absorbed it. You believed sacrifice was love. It was not love, Athena. It was a cage you built yourself."

The words landed like a blade between my ribs.

"I gave him everything," I whispered. "I thought—if I just gave enough—"

"He would see you." My grandmother's voice was soft now, but no less sharp. "I know. But he never wanted to see you. He wanted to use you. And the bond made it easy."

I pressed my fingertips together, but my hands were shaking. "I can still feel him. Even here. Even with the link sealed. I can still—"

"I know." She reached over and gripped my wrist, her touch firm and grounding. "That's why we're going to fix it."

---

She led me to the perimeter at midnight.

The full moon hung low and heavy, turning the forest silver. Phoebe was asleep back at the house, Buster curled at the foot of her bed. The Moonveil sentries had been told to give us space.

My grandmother stopped at the tree line and turned to face me. "Your wolf has been silent for years. Suppressed. Starved. When she wakes, it will not be gentle."

I nodded. My heart was pounding.

"Strip the bond's hold," she said quietly. "Let her out."

I closed my eyes. Reached inward. Found the place where my wolf had been sleeping—curled tight, barely breathing, buried under seven years of exhaustion and invisible sacrifice.

I whispered to her. *Wake up.*

Nothing.

I tried again, louder this time, my voice breaking. *Wake up.*

Still nothing. Just that terrible, suffocating silence.

Then my grandmother's voice cut through the dark, sharp and commanding. "You are the last daughter of the founding bloodline. You are not his. You were never his. Now wake up and take back what's yours."

Something inside me snapped.

My wolf didn't stir. She erupted.

The shift tore through me like a dam breaking—bones cracking, muscles stretching, skin splitting to make way for fur. I hit the ground on four legs, gasping, and the world exploded into scent and sound and moonlight so bright it burned.

I was massive. Larger than I'd ever been. My fur was silver-white, glowing in the moonlight like something out of legend. My paws sank deep into the earth, and I could feel the territory beneath me—every tree, every stone, every wolf within half a mile.

They all stopped moving. I felt it. Heads lifting. Wolves freezing mid-step. The perimeter sentries dropping into instinctive submission.

My wolf threw her head back and howled.

It wasn't grief. It wasn't rage. It was a declaration.

I felt the bond with Grant stretch thin, then thinner, until it was nothing but a thread I could sever with a single thought. Not yet. Not here. But soon.

My grandmother stood at the tree line, her expression calm. Not surprised. Just... recognition.

"There she is," she said softly.

I ran.

Not from anything. Just ran. Through the forest, my paws hitting earth that remembered my bloodline, my wolf's voice rising and falling in a song I'd forgotten I knew. The trees blurred past. The moon tracked my path. And for the first time in seven years, I felt like myself.

When I finally shifted back, my grandmother was waiting with a blanket. I wrapped it around my shoulders, my breath coming hard, my body trembling.

"How do you feel?" she asked.

I looked at her. Then at my hands. Then at the forest around us, still humming with the echo of my wolf's howl.

"Ready," I said.

She smiled. "Good. The banquet is in one week."
