Chapter 1

Mara pressed the flat of her palm against my abdomen at 2:47 on a Thursday afternoon, and I felt the heartbeat before she said the word.

"There." Her voice cracked on the single syllable. "Lucille. There it is."

I kept my eyes on the ceiling of the healer's wing because if I looked at her I would break, and I had not broken in three years and I was not going to start in a room with a door that did not lock. The heartbeat was a small, fast thing under her hand. Mine. Ours. I pressed my thumb against the mate mark on my neck and it did not feel cold for the first time since spring.

"Don't tell anyone," I said.

"Not a soul."

I walked back to my rooms rehearsing sentences. *Zander, I need to speak with you tonight.* *Zander, there is something.* *Zander—* I tried each one in the mirror. My face looked like a stranger's face wearing hope badly.

I didn't get to say any of them.

At six that evening, Laila collapsed in the great hall.

I heard the gasp before I saw her — a theatrical little intake of breath that pulled every wolf in the room toward her like a rope. She was on the flagstones by the time I reached the archway, one hand fluttering at her throat, the other clutching Zander's sleeve. His face had already gone tight with the look I knew. The look that meant nothing else in the room existed.

"Blood illness," the bribed healer said, appearing at exactly the right moment. "Advanced. She needs a draw from a bonded she-wolf, Alpha. Immediately. Or we lose her."

Zander's head turned. His eyes found me across the hall.

I took one step forward. My hand moved to my abdomen without asking permission from the rest of me. "Zander," I said, and my voice was steady, because I had rehearsed steady all afternoon. "I need to tell you something first. Just — one minute. Please. It's—"

His hand closed around my arm.

"You will submit to the blood draw, Luna."

The Alpha tone hit the mate bond like a hammer hitting a bell. I felt it in my teeth first, then my spine, then somewhere deeper — a wrongness poured down the inside of my ribcage, overriding the shape of my own body. My knees turned. My mouth opened around a word that would not come. My hand fell away from my stomach because he had told it to.

I could not fight it. Biology is not a thing you argue with. I walked to the healer's cot on legs that were not mine and I held out my arm on an order that had bypassed my consent, and somewhere inside my chest my wolf — the wolf who had never spoken clearly to me in twenty-four years — made a sound I did not know she could make.

A needle went into the vein.

Across the room, Laila's eyes met mine over Zander's shoulder. She was already looking better.

They walked her out on his arm.

I don't remember getting from the cot to the floor. I remember the smell of iron, and Mara's shoes running down the corridor, and the small fast heartbeat under my hand stuttering once, like a foot missing a stair, and then — nothing. A stillness where a rhythm had been.

Mara found me curled around the empty place. She pressed a cloth between my legs with hands that shook so badly the cloth kept slipping. She did not speak. There were no words for it and she was too honest a woman to reach for the wrong ones.

In the corridor between my room and Laila's, the Beta stood still as furniture. I saw his shadow through the crack under the door. He heard everything. He did not move.

Down the hall, through two walls, I could feel Zander through the bond — calm, focused, tender. Stroking someone's hair.

My wolf made the sound again. Not a howl. Not a scream. Something in between that had no name in any language wolves used. Then she went quiet, and the quiet was worse.

---

I stood up eight hours later because I had decided to.

I walked to his study in a clean dress. I knocked. He opened the door with the expression of a man interrupted mid-sentence.

"There was a pup," I said.

His mouth flattened. "Lucille."

"I was carrying. The blood draw—"

"I don't have the patience for your manipulations tonight. Laila is still recovering. Get out of my study."

The door closed in my face.

I stood there for three seconds. I counted them. One. Two. Three.

Then I turned and walked down two flights of stairs to the records room, and I sat at the security desk, and I opened the current rogue patrol reports, and I began to memorize.

Border coordinates. Patrol rotations. Names of contacts in three neighboring territories. Fund transfers from the pack administrative account that did not match any authorized expenditure — small ones, routed through a supply line I had never bothered to trace. I traced it now. It ended at an offshore forwarding address I did not recognize.

I wrote nothing down. I put every line of it into the part of me that had just gone very cold and very organized. I worked through the night.

---

Three days later, Laila found me in the lower corridor.

She was radiant. Recovered. The performance was so seamless I almost admired it. She stopped in front of me and let the performance slip — just a hair, just enough — so I could see the thing underneath looking out.

"The pack has noticed," she said softly, "how unstable you've become, Luna. Perhaps it would be kinder to everyone if you stopped trying so hard."

She smiled. It was almost sympathetic.

I held her eyes. I did not speak. Inside my chest, my wolf stirred — not the small stunned sound from the healer's wing, but something else. Something with a shape beginning to sharpen at the edges.

I walked past her.

Behind me, I heard her exhale — the quiet sound of a woman who thought she had just won something.

She had not. She had just told me exactly where to aim.
