Chapter 2

Rosalind's cabin smelled like dried yarrow and woodsmoke. I didn't knock. I never had. The door swung open under my palm, and Waffles hit me before I'd fully stepped inside—his big head shoving against my thigh, then his whole weight leaning into my legs like he was trying to hold me upright by force.

I put my hand on his skull and breathed.

It was the first honest welcome I'd had in months.

Rosalind looked up from her kettle. She was maybe seventy. Her hair was gray and short and she wore two rings on her left hand from a mate who had been dead longer than I'd been alive. She did not smile. She never did.

"Sit down," she said.

I sat.

She crossed the room and put her hands on my shoulders. Her palms were dry and cool. She closed her eyes. For a long time she didn't move, and I didn't move either, and Waffles pressed harder against my shin like he could feel what she was reading.

When she opened her eyes, she chose her words like she was picking herbs. One at a time.

"Madeleine. The bond you're carrying shows the signature of sustained coercive transmission."

"What does that mean."

"It means the scent on him isn't accidental. It's been layered on with consistency. Deliberately. Long enough and often enough to constitute a breach of the bond's sanctity."

I didn't say anything.

"I'm telling you because you asked me for the truth," she said. "I don't have any other tools."

I nodded once. My throat was doing something strange, but my eyes were dry. That was the arrangement I'd made with my face when I was ten.

She kept one hand on my shoulder. Her other hand had drifted, without her seeming to notice, to a place just below my collarbone. She stayed there. Her brow furrowed. She murmured something to herself that I didn't catch, and then she took her hands away and turned back to the kettle like nothing had happened.

But something had. I saw it in the set of her back.

"Rosalind?"

"Later," she said. "Drink this first."

She put a mug in front of me. Bitter, warm. Nettle and something else.

Then she began to teach me.

She called it a healer session, but it wasn't the kind of session I'd expected. She didn't ask me how I felt. She told me things. She told me that a mate bond can be a covenant or a chain and that the biology doesn't distinguish. She told me that Alpha-tone conditioning, applied repeatedly to a body without an awakened wolf to buffer it, trains the nervous system to confuse obedience with safety. She told me the pull I felt toward Oliver when he was cruel was not love. It was the bond's artificial gravity, dragging me back toward the shape I'd been carved into.

I listened. I listened the way you listen to a language you needed twenty years ago and were never taught.

I didn't have the strength to do anything with what she was telling me. Not yet. But I started to name it. And naming was the first crack.

---

The next morning, I woke at three with Kinsley's scent in my mouth.

Not on my pillow. On him. Through the bond. Cedar and amber, warm from her skin, pressed somewhere against his shoulder while he slept. I could feel the exact place her cheek had been. The mark on my neck throbbed like a second heart.

I got up. I went to the window. I breathed through my teeth until the nausea passed.

She was doing it on purpose. I hadn't been sure before. I was sure now.

By the end of the week I had a pattern. She touched his collar before pack runs. She brushed against his shoulder at every ceremony. She let her hand rest on his forearm long enough for the scent to sink into fabric. The bond delivered it all to me on a live wire. She was writing on him and I was reading it in my sleep.

I pulled down the dried bundles from the shelf above my bed—yarrow, angelica, mugwort, the compounds I'd known by smell since I was six. I started grinding. Scent-suppression. For the nausea, I told myself. Just to sleep.

But my hands were faster than my honesty. I was building something to hide inside.

I didn't say that out loud. Not even to Waffles.

---

The pack run came on a cold Saturday morning. The whole hierarchy assembled at the treeline, wolves in human form stretching in the frost. Oliver stood at the front. His breath fogged white.

Kinsley walked up beside him.

She took the Alpha-side position. Right shoulder to his left. The spot reserved for the Luna, or for a Beta if the pack had no Luna. She stepped into it the way she wore the sash—like the space had been waiting for her.

Oliver did not correct her.

Conrad glanced at me once, then away. The Gamma didn't glance at all. The pack drew the obvious conclusion in the space of one breath, and the conclusion settled into the air like weather.

I took my place at the back. Omega rear. Where I'd always been.

When we started to move, something inside me moved faster than my legs.

It wasn't a voice. It was pressure. A shoulder against a door that had been closed my whole life. Not knocking anymore. Pushing. Sustained. The frame creaked. My ribs felt too small for what was inside them.

I ran in silence with the low-ranks. My breath came steady. My face was blank.

Something in me was running ahead of the pack, and no one could see it yet.
