My Alpha Murdered Our Pup Novel Cover

My Alpha Murdered Our Pup

On the Winter Solstice, at 9:47 PM, my five-year mate bond to Alpha Hudson flickered and died while I ran. Then the pack link exploded with one careless image: Hudson lounging in a stranger's golden-lit room, holding our newborn son, while the woman beside him wore the cashmere sweater I'd donated months ago. Every Ironveil wolf saw the betrayal. Now I must unravel what happened to my pup and confront the murderous mystery behind my Alpha's choice.

Chapter 4

The waystation meeting room felt smaller this time. Or maybe I was just more aware of the walls. Caelan sat across from me, his expression locked in that neutral investigator mode I'd come to recognize. I slid the folder across the table.

"Hudson's medical records," I said. "Sealed twelve years ago."

He opened it. Read the first page. Then went completely still.

It wasn't emotion. It was the absence of it—a specific controlled stillness that told me more than any reaction would have. He read the page again. Set it down carefully. His fingers stayed on the edge of the paper.

"He's barren," Caelan said quietly. Not a question.

"Congenital. Permanent. Untreatable." I kept my voice level. "The baby can't be his."

Caelan looked up at me. Something moved behind his eyes—shock, maybe, or a recalibration so fundamental I could see the gears turning. He was quiet for longer than his usual precision required. Ten seconds. Fifteen.

Then: "I need a scent sample from the child. Can you get one?"

I'd expected the question. I'd already worked through the answer three times in my head before I came here.

"I have a plan," I said. "I'll make a Luna visit to the safe house. Bring gifts for the baby. It's consistent with everything I've been performing—gracious, forgiving, devoted. They won't question it."

Caelan's jaw tightened. Just slightly. "You don't have to go back there."

I met his eyes. Held them.

"I know," I said.

The silence stretched. His gaze didn't waver. Neither did mine.

Finally, he nodded once. "I'll have the forensics team ready. Bring anything the child has been in direct contact with—blanket, clothing, anything with prolonged scent saturation."

"Understood."

He closed the folder. Slid it back to me. His hand paused halfway across the table, then continued. "Tessa—"

I waited.

He seemed to reconsider whatever he'd been about to say. "Be careful."

"Always am," I said.

I left before he could say anything else.

---

I called ahead. Told Hudson I wanted to visit Maren and the baby—bring some gifts, extend the Luna's blessing, show that I was committed to moving forward with grace. He was surprised. Pleased. Told me that was exactly the kind of strength the pack needed to see.

I smiled into the phone and said I was glad he thought so.

The drive to the coast took two hours. I brought a wicker basket I'd filled myself: soft blankets in pale blue, a carved wooden rattle one of the pack craftsmen had made, a few small things a devoted Luna might choose. Everything looked warm. Thoughtful. Genuine.

The blanket at the bottom of the basket was identical to the others. That one would be coming back with me.

Maren answered the door. She was wearing a cream-colored sweater I'd bought her eighteen months ago. I noticed. Filed it. Smiled.

"Tessa," she said. Her voice was careful. Uncertain.

"Hi, Maren." I lifted the basket slightly. "I brought some things for the baby. May I come in?"

She hesitated. Glanced over her shoulder. Then stepped aside.

The safe house was smaller than I remembered. Or maybe I was just seeing it differently now. The living room had toys scattered across the floor. A bottle on the coffee table. The baby was in a bassinet near the window, sleeping.

Hudson wasn't there. I'd timed it that way—called when I knew he'd be handling pack business back at Ironveil.

I set the basket on the couch. Walked to the bassinet. Looked down at the baby.

He was small. Dark hair. Peaceful in sleep.

I reached down and lifted him carefully. He stirred but didn't wake. I held him against my chest, one hand supporting his head, and spoke softly.

"Hello, sweetheart," I murmured. "You're so beautiful."

Maren stood near the doorway. Watching. Her hands were clasped in front of her.

"He's healthy," she said quietly. "Growing well."

"I can see that." I shifted the baby slightly, adjusting the blanket he was wrapped in. My thumb brushed the fabric. Soft. Saturated with his scent. "You're taking good care of him."

"I'm trying."

I looked at her. She looked away.

I held the baby for several more minutes. Rocked him gently. Let his scent settle into the blanket I'd brought. When I finally set him back in the bassinet, I tucked the new blanket around him and took the original one, folding it carefully.

"For washing," I said, holding it up. "I'll bring it back next time."

Maren nodded. She didn't ask why I'd take it instead of just using their laundry. She didn't ask anything.

I left the basket. Said goodbye. Drove away with the blanket sealed in a plastic bag in my trunk.

My hands didn't shake until I was ten miles down the highway.

---

The scent analysis took three days.

Caelan's message came through at 6:42 AM: *Results confirmed. Beta Isaac Voss. Paternal match conclusive.*

I read it twice. Set the phone down. Stared at the wall.

Rory's mate. Her own mate. Margaret had arranged for Isaac to father the child—her son-in-law impregnating her son's mistress to produce an heir that could pass as Hudson's.

The full architecture was visible now. Every piece. Every lie.

I opened my cipher journal to a blank page and wrote one line:

*Everything I need. Time to build the stage.*

---

Hudson came home two days later with flowers.

Roses. Two dozen. Red. He set them on the kitchen counter while I was preparing dinner and kissed my temple.

"I want to talk," he said.

I looked up at him. Let my expression soften. "Of course."

He arranged a private dinner. Just the two of us. Candles on the table. Wine he'd chosen himself. He was trying. It was almost convincing.

He talked about mistakes. About the pack needing its Alpha and Luna united. About the bond between us being what mattered above all else. He reached across the table and took my hand.

"I need you, Tessa," he said. His voice was steady. Warm. "Ironveil needs you. I know I hurt you. I know I have to earn your trust back. But I want to try."

I let my eyes fill. Let a tear slip down my cheek. Squeezed his hand.

"I forgive you," I whispered. "I just want us to be whole again."

He exhaled. Relief. Satisfaction. He stood, came around the table, pulled me into his arms. I buried my face against his chest and let him hold me.

"Thank you," he murmured into my hair. "Thank you."

That night, he fell asleep with his arm around me. Satisfied. Reassured. Certain he'd managed me again.

I lay in the dark beside him with my thumb pressed against the inside of my wrist. My wolf was quiet. Coiled. Waiting.

In my mind, I reviewed the Tribunal guest list. Every name. Every witness.

Soon.
