Chapter 1

The day I woke from twelve years of Moon Goddess sleep, a blizzard was tearing Silverthorn apart.

I didn't call for the priests. I didn't send word to the castle.

I only reached for the little wolf doll on the stone altar beside me. Gray felt, one ear sewn crooked, button eyes I'd stitched by candlelight the night before I went under.

It was for Elowen.

My daughter. My girl.

I tucked it inside my cloak and walked out into the snow, already picturing her face.

*Mama, you came back.*

Then I reached the gates of the Moonveil Tomb, and the smile froze on my lips.

A funeral line was coming up the mountain path. Six wolf guards, cloaks soaked dark, shoulders bent under a black wooden coffin. Their boots left red smears in the white.

Blood.

The lid hadn't been nailed down. The wind shoved it sideways as they passed, and I saw her.

Silver hair. My silver hair. Glued to a gray cheek with dried blood.

Her wrists were thin as kindling. Every finger was ringed with raw, crusted grooves.

Chain marks.

The doll slipped out of my cloak and landed in the snow.

*"Don't go, Mama."* Small arms locked around my neck. Hot tears on my collarbone. *"I'll wait at the window every day. Every single day. Promise you'll come home."*

I had promised.

I came home.

"Careful with the corner," one guard muttered. "Don't want her falling out."

The one behind him snorted. "Who'd care? The useless little princess is finally dead. Now Lady Vivienne's girl can be named heir properly."

"Shut your mouth."

"Why? It's true. She was always picking on Lady Vivienne. The Alpha didn't even show up when she was giving birth."

Giving birth.

My body moved before my mind caught up. I crossed the snow in three strides, hooked my fingers into the second guard's collar, and hauled him off his feet.

The coffin lurched. The others cried out and caught it.

"Say that again."

He clawed at my wrist. "Who the hell—"

Then his eyes found mine. Silver. Ringed in moonlight.

The color drained from his face so fast it looked like someone had wiped it off.

"L-Luna Seraphina?"

The other guards dropped to their knees in the snow. The coffin settled with a dull thud.

"What happened to my daughter?" My voice came out thin. Shaking. "Tell me. All of it."

"My Luna, please, I didn't mean—"

"*All of it.*"

He swallowed. His lips were blue. "After you went into the tomb... the Alpha brought Lady Vivienne into the main house."

Vivienne.

The orphan girl I found starving at the border. The one I fed, clothed, and called my own.

"Into the house," I repeated.

"Into his chambers, my Luna. They've lived as mates for years. Young Master Kieran..." He hesitated. "He calls her Mother."

Kieran. My son. My serious little boy who used to climb into my lap and fall asleep with his fist in my hair.

I laughed.

I didn't mean to. It just came out, short and strange. The guard flinched like I'd struck him.

"Go on."

"Lady Vivienne had a daughter with the Alpha. The council stripped Princess Elowen of her title. Said a girl whose mother abandoned the pack had no claim."

"I didn't abandon anyone. I went into that tomb to hold back the curse."

"I know, my Luna. I know. But no one said that out loud anymore."

My grip tightened. Fabric tore under my nails.

"The chains," I said. "Where did those come from?"

He shut his eyes. "Her first shift. She lost control. Lady Vivienne said she was dangerous. The Alpha had her locked in the lower cells."

"For how long?"

"...Most of a winter."

A winter. In the cells under Silverthorn. I knew those cells. Ice formed on the walls in October.

"And the birth?"

"My Luna—"

"She was *twelve.*"

"There was a Moon Goddess betrothal." His words started tumbling out. "The elders said if she bore a child under the Goddess's blessing, she might win back her place. She agreed. She wanted it so badly. She said—"

He stopped.

"Said what?"

"She said when her mother came home, she wanted to still be a princess. So you wouldn't be ashamed of her."

The snow went silent.

Or maybe I just stopped hearing it.

"The baby?"

"Gone too. The labor lasted two days. She kept asking for the Alpha." His voice cracked. "He was at Lady Vivienne's daughter's naming feast."

I let go of him. He fell into the snow and didn't get up.

I walked to the coffin and lifted my daughter out.

She weighed nothing. Less than the doll.

Her skin burned with cold against my neck. I tucked her face into my shoulder like I used to when she was small and scared of thunder.

"I'm here, baby," I whispered. "Mama's here. I'm sorry I'm late."

*"I swear on my life, Sera."* Damon on his knees before the tomb, his forehead pressed to my hands. *"I'll protect our children. Nothing will touch them. Nothing."*

He hadn't even come to see her one last time.

"My Luna."

The tomb priest stumbled out through the gates, gray robes whipping in the wind. Old Aldric Thornfeld. He'd sealed me in himself.

He saw who I was holding and sank to his knees.

"My Luna, I'm so sorry. Truly. But you must go back inside. Now. Tonight."

I smoothed a strand of blood-stiff hair off Elowen's forehead. "Why?"

"Your wolf spirit is the only thing holding the curse down. Every hour you're outside these walls, the seal weakens."

"So my daughter is dead," I said softly, "and you want me to keep protecting the people who killed her."

"It isn't like that—"

"Then what is it like, Aldric?"

He had no answer. Just his breath clouding white between us.

"If you leave," he said finally, "the Moon Goddess pact over Silverthorn will collapse. All of it."

I looked down at Elowen's ruined little fingers.

Something cold settled behind my eyes. Something I had never felt in all my years as Luna. Not in childbirth. Not in war. Not when I lay down in that tomb and let the dark close over me.

I smiled.

"Then let it collapse."

Aldric's face went white. "What?"

I shifted Elowen to one arm, stepped to the nearest guard, and pulled the silver blade from his belt. He didn't dare stop me.

"My Luna, no—"

I dragged the edge across my palm.

Silver burned. Blood welled hot and dark.

I walked to the tomb's sealing stone, the great carved moon above the gate, and pressed my bleeding hand flat against it.

For one heartbeat, nothing.

Then the mountain roared.

The ground pitched under us. Snow sheared off the cliffs in white sheets. The guards screamed and scrambled back. Cracks split the moon carving down the middle, glowing red, then black.

Far below, from the towers of Silverthorn Castle, the howling started. Not one wolf. Hundreds. Wild and terrified, like the whole pack had woken from the same nightmare at once.

Aldric crawled toward me through the snow, grabbing at the hem of my cloak.

"My Luna, please! The Alpha will die!"

I bent down, picked the little felt wolf out of the snow, and tucked it gently into Elowen's arms.

Then I turned my back on the tomb.

"Then he should have thought of that," I said, "before he let our daughter die."

I walked into the storm and didn't look back.

Three steps past the broken gate, something moved inside me.

Not my wolf. I knew my wolf.

This was older. Heavier. A presence uncoiling deep beneath my ribs, vast and slow, like something that had been buried under a mountain for a very long time.

And it opened its eyes.

*At last,* a voice breathed inside my skull, ancient and amused. *You finally broke the chain, little moon.*
