Chapter 1

The perimeter sirens screamed at 2:14 in the morning, and the mate mark on my neck went dead cold.

It didn’t burn. It hollowed out, like an iron door slamming shut in an empty room.

I vaulted out of bed onto the cold hardwood floor. The air inside the pack house reeked of unfamiliar wolves—acrid sweat, wet fur, and sour rogue bile.

*Alessia.*

I threw my consciousness into the mate channel, reaching for our three-year-old daughter’s room down the corridor. Nothing answered. Only static and a thick, suffocating emptiness that I had felt for three years and stupidly blamed on my own dormant wolf.

*Jack!* I screamed through the pack mind-link, my pulse hammering in my ears. *The nursery! Jack!*

Silence. Not even an echo.

I burst into the hallway on bare feet. Two Delta warriors tore past me toward the south stairwell, their claws out, eyes dilated with battle frenzy. I didn't stop. I shoved through the smoke-filled corridor, my lungs burning, my nightgown tangling between my knees.

The nursery door was hanging off one hinge.

I skidded across the splintered floorboards. The window had been blown inward, glass glittering across the carpet like ice. The small wooden crib was overturned, smashed to kindling against the far wall. The rogue scent here was so thick it coated my tongue with copper and ash.

"Alessia?"

Then I saw her.

She was curled behind the broken crib in the shadowed corner. Still in her yellow flannel pajamas. Too small to shift. Too quiet.

My knees hit the floor. The pain hit my chest like a physical blade, tearing through muscle and bone until I couldn't draw breath. For two seconds, the room spun black.

Then the cold took over.

I pulled her small, limp body into my lap. Her skin was already losing its warmth. My throat opened, but what came out was not a sob. It was a raw, low vibration—a sound so heavy and deep it shook the floor joists. A hairline crack spider-webbed across the nursery wall, splitting the floral wallpaper from baseboard to ceiling. Deep beneath my ribs, something massive and silver stirred in the dark, snapping open eyes of pure frost before sinking back under.

Heavy boots slammed down the hall.

Jack threw himself through the ruined doorway. "Anya!"

He fell to his knees in front of us, wrapping his broad arms around my shoulders. His dark hair was wild. His Alpha wolf was wide open and buzzing with adrenaline. He buried his face in my neck, shaking.

I didn't lean into him. My whole body locked.

There was no blood on his hands. No rogue scent on his skin.

Instead, thick waves of Harper’s perfume rolled off the collar of his jacket. Sweet jasmine and warm clover, layered fresh over his sweat. It was the scent of a man who had just pulled someone against his chest in the dark.

My Alpha had tracked another woman across a burning battlefield while our daughter died on the floor.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his chest heaving against mine. "I couldn't reach you in time."

I looked down at Alessia’s pale face, my fingers digging into her cold flannel. The hollow silence in my chest suddenly had a name.

We buried her forty-eight hours later beneath the pines on the western ridge.

The pack house was silent when I walked into Jack’s private office that evening. He was standing behind his heavy oak desk, staring out the window into the gathering dusk. A bottle of whiskey sat uncorked near his laptop.

"Where were you when the link fired, Jack?"

He turned around slowly. His face looked worn, but his posture was straight, his shirt freshly pressed.

"I already answered that, Anya," he said, keeping his voice smooth and patient. "I was commanding the counter-assault on the eastern wall."

"The Gamma's log says the rogues breached the south," I said, taking two steps toward the desk. "The eastern perimeter never saw a single wolf. But Harper’s cottage sits on the eastern ridge."

Jack’s jaw ticked. The grief in his brown eyes vanished, replaced by an edge of irritation.

"Drop it, Anya," he commanded.

He pitched his voice down into that low, vibrating frequency. *Alpha tone.* The authoritative weight rolled over me like a wave of lead, designed to drop any pack member to their knees, to silence an insolent mate with biological dominance.

For five years, that tone had made me bend my neck.

Tonight, the silver heat beneath my ribs flared.

The pressure slammed into my skull, but my knees didn't buckle. My spine stayed rigid. I held his gaze, unblinking, until the Alpha rumble in his throat hitched and died.

A flash of sharp confusion flickered across his face. He blinked, looking at me as if I were a stranger.

"You're in shock," he muttered, reaching for his keys on the corner of the desk. "You're seeing shadows because you're hurting. I'm going down to the armory."

He grabbed his key ring, turned on his heel, and walked out the door, leaving his heavy leather jacket draped across the arm of his leather chair.

I didn't answer. I didn't yell.

I pressed my thumb hard into the soft skin on the inside of my wrist until the pressure turned white, then dark purple. It anchored me.

Moving silently, I stepped around the desk to his jacket.

My hand slipped into the deep inner pocket. My fingers brushed past a stray receipt and closed around a heavy, notched brass key. The master key to his sealed private quarters on the third floor—the private suite he kept locked behind deadbolts, where no Luna had ever been permitted to set foot.

I slid the cold metal into my sleeve.

Below the open office window, gravel crunched in the courtyard.

I looked down through the blinds. Reid, Jack’s Beta, was standing beside a black unmarked SUV, speaking into a radio in a clipped murmur.

"Alpha Graves's convoy is at the north gate," Reid said, checking his watch. "Alpha Jack gave the order. Disable the security cameras and wave them straight through."
