Chapter 2

Regina found me in the kitchen at six in the morning.

She didn't knock. She never knocked. She just appeared in the doorway with her clipboard and her even, administrative voice, and she told me what she always told me on assembly days.

"Post-training meal. Full spread. You stay in the kitchen until it's served and cleared." She paused, adjusting the angle of a salt shaker on the counter without looking at it. "Don't appear on the field."

"Understood," I said.

She left. Her footsteps were the same as always—measured, unhurried, precise.

I stood at the counter for a moment after she was gone. The kitchen smelled like woodsmoke and dried herbs and the faint, sweet rot of the wolfsbane bouquet someone had hung near the window for pest control. I moved away from it without thinking. My hands were steady.

I started the prep work. Dough, stock, the long mechanical rhythm of kitchen labor that I'd learned to do without using any part of my mind I cared about. Barnaby was under the worktable, his enormous head resting on my feet, his warm weight an anchor I hadn't asked for and couldn't imagine losing.

I worked for two hours.

Then I took off my apron, folded it, and set it on the counter.

Barnaby lifted his head.

"Stay," I told him.

He didn't. He followed me to the door, pressed his nose once against my hip, and then sat down in the doorway and watched me go. I didn't look back.

---

The training field was full.

I could hear them before I saw them—the low roar of the assembled pack, the crack of sparring, the Gamma calling formations. Shadowvale at full muster was maybe three hundred wolves, give or take, spread across the wide flat ground behind the pack house. The morning was grey and cold. The grass was still wet.

I walked out of the pack house in my plain work clothes—grey shirt, dark pants, boots that had seen three years of stone floors—and I crossed the grounds toward the field.

A few people near the edge noticed me first. I watched the confusion move through them like a ripple. An Omega, walking toward the assembly field. Wrong direction. Wrong clothes. Wrong everything.

One of the Gamma's warriors stepped into my path. Broad shoulders, a smirk he wasn't trying to hide.

"Kitchen's the other way," he said.

I walked around him.

The pack parted. Not for me—they parted the way people part around something they don't have a category for, stepping back with confusion on their faces, some of them laughing, a few going quiet in a way that felt different from the rest. I kept my eyes on the center of the field.

August and Regina were standing there. August in his training gear, Regina at his shoulder in the position she always occupied—close enough to be read as his Luna by anyone who didn't know the specific, careful lie being maintained. They were talking to the Gamma. August had his back half-turned.

Regina saw me first.

I watched her expression do something I'd never seen it do before. Just for a second—before she locked it back down—it cracked. Pure, cold calculation, interrupted by something that looked almost like fear.

August turned.

The color left his face.

Not gradually. All at once, the way a candle goes out—there one moment, gone the next. His eyes found mine across the field and every careful, three-year architecture of his secret collapsed in the space between us, visible to every wolf on that field who was paying attention. And they were all paying attention now. The sparring had stopped. The Gamma had gone silent. Three hundred wolves, standing in the wet morning grass, watching an Omega walk to the center of their Alpha's field.

I stopped in front of him. Close enough that I could smell the winter-cold scent of the incomplete bond between us—the thing he'd kept half-formed for three years, a leash with no collar on his end.

The silence was total.

I pressed my thumb once into the center of my palm. Then I let my hand fall open at my side.

"I, Kora," I said, into the silence, "reject you, August Black, Alpha of Shadowvale Pack, as my mate—"

The pack erupted.

August moved. One step forward, his Alpha tone building in his throat—I could feel it gathering through the bond, that resonant compulsion that had locked my legs and stolen my voice and kept me on my knees on a stone floor while my mother died across the pack house—

And then something inside me detonated.

The pain was enormous and immediate and I did not care. My bones cracked—I heard them, felt them, the sound like green wood splitting—and silver light tore through my skin from the inside, sudden and violent and ancient, and my shadow on the wet grass swelled and swelled and swelled until it was twice August's height and still growing.

His Alpha tone died in his mouth.

I heard him make a sound. I had never heard August Black make a sound like that.

The silver light kept coming.
