Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it go cold first—the mark on my neck where Philip had bitten me six years ago, sealing the mate bond the Moon Goddess herself had woven between us. It went ice-cold, like someone had pressed a frozen coin against my skin. Then the cold turned hollow. Empty. A door closing in an empty room.

I stood in the center of the Pack Alliance Ceremony hall, surrounded by three hundred Ironvale wolves and the Shadowmere delegation watching from the gallery above. Philip stood ten feet away on the raised Alpha platform. He was looking at me, but his eyes were already somewhere else.

"I, Philip Ashford, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack, reject you, Madeline Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

His voice carried through the hall. Formal. Precise. He didn't stumble over a single word.

The mark went silent.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my skull, howling. The sound was so loud inside my head I thought everyone must hear it, but no one moved. The pack stood in perfect stillness, their faces carefully blank. They had known this was coming. I was the only one who hadn't.

Philip turned toward the gallery. "I claim Camille Thorne, daughter of Alpha Gerald of the Shadowmere Pack, as my chosen Luna."

Camille descended the gallery stairs in a dress the color of fresh blood. She moved like she'd rehearsed this. She probably had. When she reached Philip's side, she placed her hand on his arm and smiled at the assembled pack. Her scent—roses and something sharper, like crushed herbs—rolled through the hall.

I pressed my fingers to the mark on my neck. It felt like scar tissue under my touch. Dead.

"Madeline Ashford." Marilyn's voice cut through the silence. Philip's mother stepped forward from her place at the edge of the platform, her Luna crest pendant gleaming at her throat. She had worn it every day since Philip's father died, even though she was no longer the active Luna. She touched it now, a deliberate gesture. "By the authority granted to the former Luna in matters of pack transition, I formally strip you of your title. You are no longer Luna of this pack."

She said something else—words about protocol and the good of the pack—but I stopped hearing her. The mind-link went next. It didn't snap. It peeled away, layer by layer, like skin. The constant hum of three hundred voices—questions, reports, the low background noise of pack life—went silent. I stood in a hall full of wolves and heard nothing.

Marilyn was still speaking. "You will vacate the pack house by sunset. Pack warriors will escort you to collect your personal belongings."

I looked at Philip. He was watching Camille, not me. His hand rested on the small of her back.

Two warriors stepped forward. I recognized them—Daniel and Marcus, wolves I had helped train when they first joined the pack patrol three years ago. They wouldn't meet my eyes.

"This way, ma'am," Daniel said quietly.

I turned and walked toward the hall's rear exit. My legs moved. My body obeyed. My wolf was still howling, but it was a distant sound now, like something trapped behind glass.

The pack parted to let me through. No one spoke. No one touched me.

I made it to the corridor before Philip caught up.

"Madeline."

I stopped. I didn't turn around.

"This is for the good of the pack," he said. "Shadowmere's alliance will secure our borders for the next decade. You understand that."

I turned slowly. He stood three feet away, his hands loose at his sides. He looked calm. Reasonable. Like he'd just explained a simple logistics decision.

"I'm taking Peyton with me," I said.

His expression shifted. "No."

"He's my son."

"He's the Alpha's son." Philip's voice dropped into Alpha tone—the commanding weight that could force a wolf's submission through sheer aural pressure. "He stays in the Alpha's house. You will not argue this."

The tone hit me like a physical blow. My wolf surged, clawing at the inside of my chest. I felt my canines start to extend and forced them back. My hands curled into fists.

Footsteps echoed behind Philip. Camille appeared in the corridor, and Peyton was with her. My son clutched Shadow, his grey stuffed wolf, against his chest. He was wearing the new jacket Camille had given him last week—expensive, with the Ironvale crest embroidered on the sleeve.

Camille's hand rested on Peyton's shoulder. She looked at me and smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

"Peyton," I said. I held out my hand.

He looked at me. Then he looked up at Camille. His chin tucked slightly to the left.

That was his tell. The thing he did when he was lying.

He didn't step toward me.

I pressed my fingers to the cold scar on my neck. The grief was a stone in my chest, smooth and heavy. I held it there. I did not let it crack.

"I'll come back for you," I said.

Peyton's grip on Shadow tightened.

I turned and walked down the corridor. Daniel and Marcus followed at a distance. I didn't look back.

I walked out of the pack house, across the grounds, and through the gate. When I reached the border, I stopped and looked at the Ironvale territory marker—a carved stone post that had stood there for three generations.

Then I kept walking.

By the time I reached Sera's house in Thornfield territory, it was past midnight. She opened the door before I knocked. She must have scented me coming.

"Come in," she said.

I stepped inside. The door closed behind me. Sera wrapped her arms around me and didn't say a word.

I let myself break for exactly one hour. I sat on her couch and shook and felt the empty place where the bond used to be. Sera sat beside me, solid and quiet.

When the hour was up, I straightened. I wiped my face. I pulled out the notebook I'd been keeping for the last three months—the one where I'd written down every strange meeting Philip had taken, every warrior reassignment he'd told me not to question, every time the border patrols had been quietly thinned.

I set it on the table between us.

"Sera," I said. "I need you to find out what Philip's been doing with Shadowmere."

Sera looked at the notebook. Then she looked at me. Her expression sharpened.

"I've been hearing things," she said. "Ironvale wolves showing up in Shadowmere territory. Wearing Shadowmere colors."

I nodded. "He's giving them something. I don't know what yet."

"I'll find out." Sera pulled the notebook toward her and started flipping through the pages. "What are you going to do?"

I thought of Peyton's chin tucking to the left. The way Camille's hand had rested on his shoulder.

"I'm going to get my son back," I said.

Sera looked up. "How?"

I didn't answer. I didn't know yet.

Three days later, a courier arrived at Sera's door with a sealed letter. The handwriting on the envelope was Marilyn's.

I opened it.

*You are required to return to the Ironvale pack house to assist with preparations for the Pack Banquet honoring the Shadowmere alliance. Report to the kitchens at dawn tomorrow. —Marilyn Ashford, Former Luna.*

Sera read it over my shoulder. "She wants you to serve them."

"Yes," I said.

"You're not going."

I folded the letter and tucked it into my coat pocket. "I am."

"Madeline—"

"Peyton is in that house," I said. "And something is wrong. I can feel it."

Sera studied my face. Then she nodded slowly. "Be careful."

I pressed my fingers to the scar on my neck. It was still cold. Still empty.

"I will," I said.

I left for Ironvale at dawn.
