Chapter 4

The news reached me through Declan at half past noon.

A text, plain and dry as pack bulletins always were: *V. Bishop announced pregnancy at pack house gathering this morning. Alpha Montgomery confirmed. Banquet scheduled, full moon minus four days. Neighboring packs invited.*

I read it twice. I set the phone on the counter.

Then I pulled the soup bones from the freezer.

There is something about the slow work of it—rinsing the bones, the cold water going cloudy, the particular weight of the stockpot—that has always quieted the part of my mind that wants to spiral. I learned it from an Omega named Petra who ran Ironvale's kitchen for thirty years before her knees gave out. She taught me that the broth doesn't care what's happening outside the pot. You give it heat and time and it becomes what it's supposed to be. That's the whole lesson.

I had the bones in the pot and the onions halved and charring in the dry pan when I heard boots on the porch.

Kieran knocked. He always knocked.

"It's open," I said.

He came in and read the room the way he always did—a single sweep, quiet, cataloguing without commenting—and then he pulled out the chair at the far end of the kitchen table and sat down. He did not ask what had happened. He did not ask what I was making. He folded his hands on the table and watched the window.

My wolf noticed him the way she always noticed him. That low, involuntary pull, like a tide responding to something it didn't choose. I kept my hands on the work.

The broth simmered for two hours. The cottage filled with the smell of it—bone and bay leaf and the faint char of the onion—and neither of us spoke, and the silence was not uncomfortable, which was the part I kept not knowing what to do with.

When it was ready I ladled two bowls without asking. I set one in front of him and kept one for myself and sat at the opposite end of the table.

He looked at the bowl. He looked at me.

He picked up the spoon and ate.

I watched him for one unguarded second—the way his shoulders had dropped a fraction, the way he held the spoon like a man who had been eating alone for a very long time and had forgotten that it could be otherwise—and then I looked at my own bowl.

"I'm going to the banquet," I said.

"I know," he said.

I looked up. He was already looking at me, and I held it this time—the full weight of his storm-grey eyes—and did not pull away. Something in my chest went very still.

"She's faking it," I said. "The pregnancy. Maren's bloodwork, the batch numbers, three unmated warriors who can verify the scent by nose. I have all of it."

He nodded once. "Then we go."

*We.* I noticed the word. I let it sit there without touching it.

"I need you behind me," I said. "Not beside me. Not ahead. Behind."

"Understood."

"If Lucas—"

"I will not move unless you are in danger." His voice was even. Absolute. "Your case. Your evidence. Your pack."

I nodded. I finished the broth. Outside, the light through the east window had gone the color of old brass, and the pines were dark against it, and somewhere past them the SUVs sat at the turnout, holding their distance exactly.

---

He came two days before the banquet.

I heard him before I saw him—the particular cadence of Lucas's footsteps on gravel, a sound I had known for twenty years, and my wolf went very still inside me, the stillness of something that has stopped being afraid and started being ready.

I opened the door before he reached it.

He stopped at the edge of the temporary boundary line—the invisible perimeter that pack protocol required him to acknowledge, even as Alpha, even here. He was in a grey jacket, his dark gold hair pushed back, and his face wore the expression I had watched him use on subordinates for two decades: patient, magnanimous, the look of a man doing someone a favor by speaking to them at all.

"Jo." He hadn't called me that in years. "This has gone far enough."

The Alpha tone arrived with the next sentence—not a shout, never a shout with Lucas, just a pressure that landed behind the eyes and in the back of the throat, a command dressed as conversation.

"Withdraw the petition. Leave Ironvale. You made your point at the banquet—everyone saw it, no one believed it, and the kindest thing I can offer you now is the chance to go quietly before this gets worse for you."

I felt it press against me. The old Jolene would have felt it in her knees.

Instead I felt something else—a silver heat rising from the base of my spine, unhurried and enormous, flooding outward through my skin like light through a cracked door. My wolf did not surge. She simply expanded. Filled the doorframe. Filled the morning.

Lucas stepped back.

One full step, involuntary, his heel catching on the gravel, and his face did something I had never seen it do in twenty years of marriage—it went blank with something very close to fear.

I watched him recover. I watched him pull his Alpha face back into place over the fear like a man straightening a crooked picture.

"I'll see you at the banquet, Lucas," I said.

I closed the door.

My hand was steady on the handle. My wolf settled back into her warmth inside me, satisfied, and I stood in the quiet kitchen with the canvas bag on the counter and the sealed packet inside it and four days until the full moon.

I went back to the table. I opened the journal.

I had work to do.
