Chapter 4

The Luna's chair had never felt so much like a witness stand.

Georgia called the session to order at ten o'clock sharp, her voice carrying the particular satisfaction of a woman who had been planning this for longer than she was willing to admit. Quarterly review of the Luna's pack duties. Routine. Standard. The kind of thing that appeared in the pack charter as a formality and had never, in seven years, been used as anything else.

Until today.

I sat with my hands folded on the table and my face arranged in the expression I had perfected over seven years of exactly these moments—attentive, composed, quietly grateful to be included. The cipher notebook was open on my knee beneath the table. My pen was already in my hand.

Elder Thorne spoke first. He was sixty-three, had served on the elder council since before Spencer's father died, and had the particular confidence of a man who had never once been asked to justify his opinions. He spoke about the Luna's role in pack strength. About the importance of a bonded pair presenting unified power. About how a Luna without a wolf created—he paused here, choosing his word with visible care—*imbalance*.

I wrote his name down.

Elder Cassidy went next. She was kinder about it, which was somehow worse. She spoke gently about the strain of an heir-less bond on pack morale. About how the younger wolves needed to see a future taking shape. Her eyes were soft and apologetic the entire time, and she looked at me once, briefly, before looking away.

I wrote her name down.

Two more after that. Each one a variation on the same theme, each one landing with the practiced rhythm of a performance that had been rehearsed. I cataloged them all. I kept my pen moving in the small, precise strokes of the cipher my father's Beta had taught me, and I did not press my thumb to my wrist once.

Seraphina was very still.

Not calm. Still. The difference mattered.

Then Georgia turned to Sloan.

"Our honored guest," she said, and the warmth in her voice was something I had never once heard her direct at me, "has shown remarkable strength in the face of terrible loss. I thought it fitting that she speak to us today. About motherhood. About what it means to raise a pup within a pack's protection."

Sloan's hand settled on Jrue's shoulder.

She spoke beautifully. Of course she did. Warm and self-deprecating and precise—hitting every note that the room wanted to hear, her voice carrying that practiced humility that I recognized now as performance, the same performance I had been running for seven years, just pointed in a different direction. She talked about Jrue's resilience. About how a child needs stability, and a pack, and a family that chooses him.

Jrue sat very straight beside her. He was watching the elders with those quiet, careful eyes.

I looked at him for exactly one second. Then I looked back at my notebook.

I wrote Sloan's name at the bottom of the list. Then I drew a small box around it, the way I marked entries that were going to need their own page.

The session ended forty minutes later. Georgia closed it with a few words about the pack's continued commitment to its values, and people began to move and talk, and Spencer caught my eye from across the room with an expression that was almost gentle—the expression he wore when he thought he was being patient with me.

I smiled back. Soft. Grateful. The usual.

I counted seventeen names in the notebook by the time I walked out.

---

The second intercept came just after four.

I was in the archive room with the cipher notebook and a cup of tea that had gone cold when I opened the channel and Spencer's voice came through, mid-sentence, talking to Sloan.

*—once she signs, the inheritance claim is airtight. Pack law is clear. Her mother's territories transfer through the adoption declaration. Permanently.*

Sloan's response was immediate and easy, the tone of someone confirming a plan they had reviewed many times. *That was always the arrangement. The one we made before the wedding.*

Before the wedding.

I stopped writing. My pen rested on the paper and I sat very still and let the full weight of that sentence land somewhere in the center of my chest.

Before the wedding. Before the bonding ceremony. Before Creed Sullivan put me under for a procedure I was told was a cyst removal. Before seven years of being told I was lucky to be kept.

All of it planned. Every piece of it, from the beginning.

I sat in the archive room for three minutes. I allowed myself exactly three minutes—the cold tea, the cedar smell, the distant sound of the pack house settling around me—and I felt the full, specific, clarifying weight of it.

Then I closed my eyes. Opened them. Picked up my pen.

I transcribed the exchange in full. Added it to the file. Opened the channel again.

Two more messages before midnight.

---

Spencer came to our quarters just after ten.

He had the document in his hand—a clean, formal packet, the pack record-keeper's seal on the cover page. He set it on the desk in front of me with the careful deliberateness of a man presenting something he expected to be received as a gift.

"I thought you should have time to look it over before we make it official," he said. His voice was even. Reasonable. The Alpha tone was there, but low—a current beneath still water rather than a command. "You've always wanted to be a mother. This gives that boy what he deserves. A real family. A real future."

I picked up the document.

I read it slowly. Every clause. Every line of the legal language that the pack record-keeper had drafted to transfer my mother's territories—her name, her bloodline, her land—into permanent inheritance for a child I had met four days ago. I read the signature line at the bottom with my name already printed beneath it, waiting.

Spencer was watching me. I could feel it.

"It's a lot of legal language," I said. I kept my voice soft. Slightly overwhelmed. The usual register. "I want to make sure I understand it properly before I sign."

A pause. Short. I felt the microexpression before I looked up to confirm it—the small tightening along his jaw, the fraction of a second where the reasonable mask slipped and something colder showed through.

Then it was gone.

"Of course," he said. "Take the time you need."

He left.

I waited until his footsteps faded down the corridor. Then I took out my phone and photographed every page—every clause, every seal, every line of language designed to make my mother's inheritance disappear.

I added it to the file.

Then I sat at the desk with the document in my hands and thought about the ceremony I was going to plan. Something formal. Something that required witnesses. Something that invited neighboring Alphas, and the Lycan King's court, and every elder who had spoken in that hall today.

Seraphina stirred in my chest—not pushing, not demanding. Just present. Warm and enormous and very, very patient.

For the first time in seven years, so was I.
