My Alpha Humiliated Me While I Carried His Heir Novel Cover

My Alpha Humiliated Me While I Carried His Heir

At 5:47 a.m., three days before she meant to tell Alpha Jacob she was carrying his child, the mate bond shattered. The bite mark on her neck turned frostbitten, then numb, the chill crawling through her collarbone toward her heart. She was reviewing border patrol reports when Garrett knocked — a steady senior wolf, yet pale as death. "Luna," he said quietly, "I need to report something." She let him in and shut the door. In one brutal morning, a rejected Luna must face a shattered bond, a dangerous secret, and the Alpha who humiliated her — while his heir grows beneath her heart.

Chapter 2

The banquet hall smelled like roasted venison and cedar smoke, and every seat at the long tables was full except one.

Jacob's.

I stood at the head of the room in a plain gray dress, no jewelry, my hair pinned back. Forty-three envoys from eleven allied packs had driven or flown in for this. Some of them had crossed two state lines. They had come because Ironveil's alliance renewals were worth coming for, and because I had spent six years making sure that stayed true.

"Luna Adele." Envoy Hale from Redstone Ridge—no relation to Jacob, thank the Goddess—leaned in with his glass. "Will the Alpha be joining us before the toast?"

"The Alpha's schedule is his own," I said pleasantly. "Try the elk. It's from our northern range."

He laughed. He didn't push.

The next one did. And the one after that. By the third course I had answered the same question nine different ways, each answer polished and empty. I refilled glasses. I asked about their harvest yields and their border disputes and their pups. I remembered every name.

Inside my chest, my wolf paced.

She had been like that since the morning Garrett knocked on my door. Not clawing anymore—just walking, back and forth, back and forth, waiting for something.

Then the mind-link opened.

It happened the way a door blows open in a draft. Maren, one of my Deltas, careless with her channel—I felt her surprise the second she realized, but for two full breaths, the connection was raw and wide.

And I heard him.

Fire crackling. Voices. Jacob's laugh, loose and warm in a way I hadn't heard directed at me in years.

"—and this," he was saying, "is Fiona. My true companion."

Murmurs. Polite ones. I recognized at least two of those voices. Envoys. Envoys who had told my office they couldn't attend the banquet.

The link snapped shut.

*Luna—* Maren's voice, panicked. *Luna, I'm sorry, I didn't—*

*It's fine, Maren.*

*Luna—*

*It's fine.*

I set my wine glass down on the table. It made a small sound against the wood. Somewhere behind me, someone was telling a story about a bear.

My true companion.

Six years. Eleven treaties. Three border wars prevented. A pack that had been drowning in debt when I married into it and now sat at the center of every trade route in the Pacific Northwest.

My true companion.

I stood up.

I didn't need to raise my voice. I just waited, and the hall noticed, the way a room always notices when the person running it stops moving. Forks went down. Conversations died in rows, back to front.

"Thank you all for coming," I said. "Ironveil is honored. Before the toast, I have an announcement regarding our diplomatic structure."

Every face turned toward me.

"Effective immediately, I will no longer broker, negotiate, or guarantee agreements on the Alpha's behalf."

Silence. Complete, ringing silence.

"Agreements I have personally signed remain valid under my personal guarantee," I continued. "Any new terms, renewals, or amendments will require the Alpha's direct participation. Thank you. Please enjoy the rest of your evening."

I sat down.

Nobody moved. Then, slowly, the room came apart into whispers—sharp, alarmed, spreading table to table. Envoy Hale had gone gray. Across from him, the woman from Blackfen Hollow was already reaching for her phone.

They understood exactly what I'd said.

I had just told eleven packs that the man who signed their treaties couldn't be trusted to honor them, and that the only person who could had stepped away from the table.

I picked up my wine and drank it slowly.

---

The first inquiry arrived at the safe house before eight the next morning. Two more by nine. All formal, all sealed, all addressed to me by name—not to the Alpha's office.

*Who will co-sign the spring resource pact renewal?*

Jovie brought them in and set them on my desk without comment. He'd been awake as long as I had. He always was.

At eleven, Jacob kicked my door open.

He hadn't shaved. That was the first thing I noticed. In six years of marriage, Jacob had never once let anyone see him unshaven.

"You will stop this," he said.

I didn't look up from the ledger. "Good morning."

"You humiliated me in front of every ally we have."

"You weren't there."

He crossed the room in four strides and slammed his hand flat on my desk. The teacup rattled. "You're undermining my authority. Deliberately. In front of packs that answer to me."

I finally raised my eyes.

"They're not contacting me to undermine you, Jacob. They're contacting me because I negotiated their agreements. They know my handwriting. They've never met your Beta."

"I am the Alpha of Ironveil—"

"When does the Silvercrest timber pact renew?"

He stopped.

I waited. I let the silence sit there, wide and awful, and I watched his jaw work.

"That's not—"

"The month is enough. I'm not asking for the day."

His hand was still on my desk. It curled slowly into a fist.

He didn't know. He had never known. He'd never once asked.

I closed the ledger. The sound was very small.

"We're done," I said.

He stood there a moment longer, breathing hard, and I watched something flicker behind his eyes—something that wasn't rage. Something almost like the man who used to fall asleep with his hand on my hip.

Then it was gone, and so was he.

I heard it as the door swung shut behind him. Faint, through the ruined threads of a bond that shouldn't have been able to carry anything anymore.

A whimper.

His wolf.

I sat very still until the sound of his truck faded down the access road.

---

Jovie left before dawn the next morning, hood up, a folded list in his jacket pocket.

"Three things," I told him at the door. "Her pack of origin. Her current mating status. And where our wolfsbane went."

"You think they're connected."

"I think they're the same answer."

He glanced at the list. Twelve names. Border traders, half-rogues, a woman who ran a gas station outside the southern line and knew every truck that crossed it. Contacts I'd spent years building in the parts of our territory Jacob considered beneath an Alpha's notice.

"He never knew about these people," Jovie said.

"No." I pulled my coat tighter against the cold. "He never thought the edges mattered."

Jovie almost smiled. "That's usually where the rot starts."

Then he was gone into the trees, and I stood alone in the dark with my hand pressed to the cold, numb mark on my neck, and waited for the sun.
