Chapter 4

The heavy oak door of my bedroom didn't just open; it splintered inward with a violent crash. Wood shards skittered across the hardwood floor. Kolson stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes entirely black. His wolf was in control, and he was furious. Behind his massive frame cowered Capri, clutching his shirt, her face buried in her hands as she unleashed loud, theatrical sobs.

"Are you out of your damn mind?" Kolson roared.

Before I could even open my mouth, the crushing, suffocating weight of his Alpha aura slammed into me. It hit me like a freight train. My spine collided hard with the plaster wall, pinning me in place. My inner wolf didn't cower or submit—she snarled, disgusted by him—but my human body was hopelessly trapped by his sheer supernatural force.

"You ruined her live stream! You humiliated her in front of millions of people!" Kolson snarled, stepping directly into my space.

"She killed my parents, Kolson!" I screamed back, fighting the invisible pressure crushing my chest. "She orchestrated the attack! She caused my miscarriage!"

"It was an accident! She was just making content!" he yelled, his voice echoing off the walls. The sheer absurdity of his words made my stomach churn. "Her career is everything to her, Aviana. You know how hard she's worked for this! You had no right to steal her phone!"

Then, the sobbing stopped.

Capri peeked out from behind his broad shoulder. The tears vanished instantly, replaced by a wicked, triumphant smirk. She stepped out of his shadow, walking right up to me while Kolson kept me helplessly pinned against the wall.

"You really think you can win against me?" Capri whispered. Her voice was no longer the sweet, chirpy tone she used for her followers. It was pure, dripping venom. She glanced at Kolson, but he didn't even flinch. He just stared blankly ahead, letting her do whatever she wanted. "I have him completely wrapped around my finger. I always have, and I always will."

She pulled a backup phone from her designer pocket, tapping the screen. "You ruined today's plan, but I have so many more scripts ready. Next week, we're doing the 'Terrified Luna' series. I'm going to lock you in the abandoned silver mines for a few hours. Your panic attacks will get me so many likes and brand deals. And Kolson?"

She patted his chest. "He's going to hand me the keys."

I stared at my fated mate, begging him with my eyes to deny it. To protect me. But Kolson just looked away, his jaw tight.

"It's just for a few hours, Aviana," he muttered. "It'll boost her engagement. We owe her that much."

My heart turned to absolute ice. The man standing before me wasn't my mate. He was a pathetic puppet, entirely lost to his toxic trauma bond.

I didn't pack a bag. I didn't leave a note. When midnight struck and the pack house finally fell silent, I slipped out the window of my quarters and vanished into the treeline.

The autumn air was freezing, but my blood ran hot with purpose. I moved swiftly in my human form, staying downwind of the border patrols. I knew the Shadowcrest security blind spots better than anyone. Every step away from the territory felt like shedding a heavy, suffocating skin.

I reached the neutral territory borders an hour later. The river roared over jagged rocks, splitting the land between Shadowcrest and the Lycan kingdom. Standing on the opposite bank, bathed in the silver moonlight, was a towering, imposing figure.

Lycan Prince Maximus Hamilton.

He didn't look surprised to see me. He stood with his hands deep in the pockets of his dark coat, his golden eyes glowing fiercely in the shadows. The raw, ancient power of his Lycan blood commanded the very air around him, yet it didn't suffocate me like Kolson's aura. It felt grounded. It felt like a shield.

I waded through the icy shallows, the freezing water biting at my calves, and stopped just a few feet from him on the rocky shore.

"You finally see him for what he is," Maximus said. His voice was a deep, resonant rumble that vibrated in my chest. There was no pity in his tone. Just cold, hard fact.

"My mate is dead to me," I said, my voice steady despite the shivering of my wet skin. "He belongs to her."

Maximus's lip curled in absolute disgust. "A weak Alpha ruled by a human app and a toxic childhood bond. He disgraces the title. And she desecrates our sacred laws for sport."

He took a slow step closer. He was massive, easily a foot taller than me, but I didn't back down. I met his glowing golden gaze head-on.

"I saw what you did on that live stream today, Aviana," Maximus murmured, a flicker of genuine respect softening his harsh, aristocratic features. "You have the spirit of a true warrior. Your parents would be proud."

The mention of my parents made my throat tighten, but I swallowed the grief. Now was not the time for tears. Now was the time for war.

"I need your help, Maximus," I said plainly, lifting my chin. "I have the files. The financial records. The mind-link transcripts. But I need power and influence to back my play. I want to destroy her, and I want him to watch his empire crumble."

Maximus extended a massive, scarred hand toward me. A dangerous, thrilling smile played on his lips, revealing the tips of his sharp canines.

"I've been waiting for you to ask, little wolf," he said softly. "Let's burn their sick world to the ground."

I reached out and placed my hand firmly in his. The alliance was sealed.
