Chapter 5

Caelan Voss arrived at dawn.

I heard the shift in the pack house before I saw him. The guards outside my door went rigid. Their scent spiked—not fear exactly, but the sharp chemical edge of wolves suddenly aware they were being measured by something higher up the food chain.

Footsteps in the corridor. Measured. Unhurried. The kind of certainty that didn't need to announce itself.

The door opened.

He was alone. No retinue. No formal regalia. Just a tall male in dark travel clothes, his presence filling the room without effort. Cedar and winter pine—clean, cold, nothing like the layered jasmine that had contaminated my bond for months.

He didn't position himself at the center. He stood slightly to the side, leaving the door unblocked, and inclined his head.

"Vivienne Ashford," he said. Not Luna. Just my name. "I'm Caelan Voss."

I sat up slowly. My hands were steady. The wolfsbane purge had left me hollowed out, but I'd learned to hold my body like it wasn't.

"Lycan Prince," I said.

He didn't correct the formality. Just watched me with eyes that were too calm, too patient. Like he had all the time in the world and knew I didn't.

"How are you recovering?" he asked.

The question was so ordinary it felt like a trap. I gave him nothing. "The purge is progressing. I'm managing."

He nodded once. Didn't push. Didn't offer false sympathy or ask to see the scar. Just accepted the answer and moved on.

"I'm here investigating rogue activity in Ironvale territory," he said. "The corridor assault. I need to understand what you remember about the rogues' scent."

Legitimate. Professional. Except there was weight behind the question—something additional I couldn't name yet.

I answered precisely. "Unfamiliar. Not Ironvale pack. The lead rogue carried pine tar and wet earth. The others were less distinct. They moved like hired muscle, not coordinated hunters."

Caelan's expression didn't change, but something in his posture shifted. A fractional easing, like I'd confirmed something he'd suspected.

"Hired," he repeated quietly.

"Yes."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "And your Alpha. Where was he during the assault?"

My chest tightened. I kept my voice level. "You'd have to ask him."

Caelan's eyes stayed on mine. He didn't look away. Didn't let me deflect. But he also didn't use his Alpha tone—didn't compel, didn't command. Just waited.

I realized, with a cold shock of clarity, that he already knew the answer. He was asking me if I would say it.

I held his gaze. "The bond was open. He heard me."

Caelan went very still. The kind of stillness that wasn't calm—it was a predator deciding whether to move.

Then he inclined his head again. "Thank you for your time, Luna."

He turned toward the door. Stopped with his hand on the frame and looked back.

"One more thing," he said. His voice was quieter now, almost careful. "Your scent. Cedar and moonflower. It's unusual."

My wolf stirred.

For the first time since the branding, something moved in the silence where she used to be. Not speech. Not strength. Just a faint, tentative pulse—like a root testing soil, searching for water.

I didn't let it show on my face. "Is it."

Caelan's eyes tracked my expression with the precision of someone who noticed everything. "Very," he said. Then he left.

The door clicked shut.

I sat in the silence and pressed two fingers against the scar on my neck. My wolf was still there. Dormant, damaged, but not dead.

And the Lycan Prince had just told me he recognized my scent.

---

Lennox received the tribunal summons the next morning.

I heard about it from the young healer's assistant who brought my water. Her hands shook as she set the cup down, and she told me in a whispered rush: the Alpha had been found in his study holding the summons in both hands, staring at it like he couldn't make the words mean something else. His aura had flickered. The Beta had seen it.

I thanked her quietly. She left.

I lay back on the cot and stared at the ceiling. Ten days until my wolf woke or died. Twelve until the tribunal convened.

Lennox had just run out of time.

---

That evening, Avery made her move.

She arrived at the great hall in formal dress, Lennox at her side, and requested an audience with Caelan's retinue. The pack gathered to watch. I heard every detail later from three different sources, their accounts identical in the parts that mattered.

Avery had positioned herself as Lennox's chosen mate. Performed the role with flawless confidence. Smiled at the Lycan Prince and his guards. Spoke about pack continuity and functional leadership.

Caelan acknowledged her with formal courtesy. Then he turned the conversation back to the rogue investigation and declined to recognize her as Luna-equivalent without tribunal confirmation.

The hall had gone quiet. Avery's jasmine scent spiked—sharp, chemical, the biological tell of a wolf whose certainty had just cracked.

Lennox, standing beside her, absorbed the scent through their fresh bond. His wolf strained visibly toward the door. Toward the healer's ward. Toward me.

The pack saw it happen.

---

Caelan returned to my room that night.

No guards this time. Just him, standing in the doorway with his shoulders loose and his hands at his sides.

"The tribunal convenes in twelve days," he said quietly. "You'll be called to testify."

I sat up. "I know."

He stepped inside. Closed the door. Moved to the side of the room again—not blocking, not cornering. Just present.

"There's something else," he said. His voice was different now. Lower. Almost careful. "Your scent. It's not just unusual. It's royal."

My wolf surged.

Not speech. Not strength. But a sudden, violent pulse of recognition that hit me like a fist to the chest. My hands gripped the edge of the cot. My breathing went shallow.

Caelan's eyes tracked every micro-movement. "The Lycan King has been searching for a lost daughter for thirty years. Taken as an infant. Her bloodline was cedar and moonflower."

I couldn't speak. My wolf was thrashing now—not trying to surface, but trying to break through something that had been holding her down for a decade.

Caelan took one step closer. Not threatening. Just close enough that his scent wrapped around me—cedar and winter pine, clean and cold and utterly unlike anything I'd ever known through the bond.

"At the tribunal," he said quietly, "when you testify, your wolf may try to wake. If she does—if your bloodline surfaces in front of the Lycan Council—"

He didn't finish.

Because at that exact moment, the door slammed open.

Lennox stood in the frame, his Alpha aura flaring, his eyes locked on Caelan with the kind of rage that came from watching another male stand too close to something he still believed he owned.

"Get away from my Luna," Lennox said.

Caelan didn't move. Didn't even turn his head. Just kept his eyes on mine and said, very quietly:

"Is that what you are?"
