Chapter 2

I heard Preston's footsteps in the corridor at exactly seven-fifteen that evening.

I'd been waiting in the common sitting room just outside the Alpha quarters, positioned where he couldn't miss me when he rounded the corner. A medical journal lay open on my lap — something about accelerated bone-knitting protocols in adolescent wolves — but I hadn't read a single word in the past twenty minutes. I was listening. Tracking his approach the way a Healer tracks a patient's pulse.

When he appeared, I looked up and smiled.

"Preston," I said warmly. "You're home early."

He stopped. Just for half a second, but I saw it. The micro-pause. The way his shoulders went tight before he forced them to relax. His scent hit me a moment later — winter sage, faint as always now, but underneath it, woven through like a stain, was that cheap vanilla-and-rose blend I'd smelled in my armory.

Sky's perfume.

Seraphine's growl was silent but absolute. *We see it. We smell it. He reeks of her.*

I kept smiling.

"Autumn." His voice was smooth, warm, everything an Alpha's voice should be when greeting his Luna. He crossed the room and bent to kiss my forehead. I let him. His lips were cool. "I thought you weren't back until Thursday."

"The summit wrapped early," I said lightly. "They condensed the last two panels. I figured I'd come home and surprise you."

His hand rested on my shoulder. I could feel the slight tension in his fingers, the way he was calculating behind his eyes. Surprise, yes. But not the good kind. Not relief. This was the surprise of a wolf who'd been caught off-guard and was rapidly adjusting his strategy.

"That's wonderful," he said. His smile widened. "I missed you."

I tilted my head, studying him the way I'd study a fractured bone through a diagnostic scan. "Did you? You didn't call once while I was gone."

"You know how it is during pack training season," he said easily. "I didn't want to interrupt your work. You're always so focused at those summits."

It was a good deflection. Reasonable. The kind of answer that would satisfy most wolves.

But I wasn't most wolves.

"Of course," I said. I closed the journal and set it aside. "How was training this week?"

"Intense." He sat down beside me, his posture casual, one arm draped along the back of the couch behind my shoulders. "We've been running the advanced combat drills. Sky Guzman's been showing real improvement."

There it was. Her name, dropped into the conversation like it was nothing. Like she was just another warrior in his pack.

I nodded thoughtfully. "Sky. She's the one with the shifting issues, isn't she? The repeated stress fractures in her femur and tibia?"

"She's been working through it," Preston said. His tone was careful now. Measured. "I've been giving her extra attention. One-on-one sessions."

"That's very generous of you." I kept my voice light, interested, the way a Luna should sound when discussing her Alpha's mentorship of a struggling pack member. "I should check her records. Make sure the bone density is stable before she pushes too hard."

Something flickered across his face. Too fast for most wolves to catch, but I was a Healer. I saw everything.

"I'm sure she's fine," he said. "She hasn't complained."

"Wolves with chronic injuries rarely do," I said. "Especially when they're trying to impress their Alpha."

His arm tightened slightly behind my shoulders. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to remind me he was there. That he was bigger. Stronger.

That he was the Alpha.

"You sound tired," he said softly. "Long drive?"

"A little." I let my head rest against his shoulder, playing the part. The devoted Luna. The trusting mate. "I think I'll turn in early tonight."

"Good idea." He kissed the top of my head. His scent wrapped around me — winter sage so faint I had to strain to find it, and underneath, always underneath now, that sickly-sweet vanilla that didn't belong. "I have some pack business to handle tonight anyway. Gamma reports. I'll be in late."

Of course he would.

I stood, smoothing my Healer's tunic. "Don't work too hard."

"Never." His smile was perfect. Warm. Utterly convincing.

I walked back to our quarters, feeling his eyes on me the entire way. I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I knew exactly what he was thinking: relief. Calculation. The quiet certainty that he'd managed the situation, that his Luna suspected nothing, that he was still in control.

Let him think it.

Inside our bedroom, I locked the door and pulled out my phone. A single text to Mikael: *He knows I'm home. Proceed as planned.*

The reply came thirty seconds later: *On it. First batch of treasury records attached. You're going to want to see this.*

I opened the attachment.

The spreadsheet was dense, color-coded, meticulously organized in the way only Mikael could manage. But even at a glance, the pattern was obvious. Transfers. Small enough not to trigger automatic audits, frequent enough to add up. Three years' worth of systematic embezzlement, routing pack funds into a private account registered under a shell corporation.

Preston's shell corporation.

I scrolled further. Mikael had highlighted specific dates, cross-referenced them with pack event logs. Every major transfer corresponded with a summit I'd attended, a conference I'd spoken at, a certification exam I'd passed. Every time I'd earned recognition, Preston had stolen a little more.

Seraphine's voice was ice in my mind. *He's been feeding off us. Off everything we built.*

"I know," I whispered.

I saved the file to my memory-stone archive. Added a timestamp. Began drafting my analysis notes in the clinical shorthand I used for complex diagnostic cases.

Subject continues pattern of asset misappropriation correlating directly with mate's professional achievements. Hypothesis: pathological response to perceived status threat. Requires further evidence to establish intent and duration.

My phone buzzed again. Another message from Mikael, this one with two PDF attachments.

The first was a letter. My acceptance to the Lycan King's Royal Healer Fellowship, dated eighteen months ago. I'd never seen it. Never knew it existed.

The second was an invitation to present at the Continental Healer Conference in Vienna, sent fourteen months ago.

Also never received.

Both had been intercepted through the pack's central correspondence system. Both had been marked as "reviewed and declined on behalf of Luna Brooks" by the Alpha's office.

By Preston.

I sat down on the edge of the bed, staring at the screen.

All those months I'd wondered why the fellowship committee never responded. Why the conference organizers went silent. I'd told myself I wasn't good enough yet. That I needed to prove myself more. Work harder.

And the whole time, he'd been deleting my future.

I activated the memory-stone again.

"Evidence log, continued," I said quietly. "Subject has systematically intercepted professional correspondence intended for his mate over a minimum eighteen-month period, effectively sabotaging career advancement opportunities without mate's knowledge or consent. Pattern suggests deliberate, sustained campaign to limit mate's institutional standing and external professional network."

I paused. Took a breath.

"Preliminary assessment: Subject exhibits clinical markers of pathological narcissism with controlling behavioral patterns. Mate bond deterioration likely accelerated by Subject's inability to tolerate mate's independent success. Recommend immediate escalation of evidence collection and preparation of formal rejection protocol."

I stopped recording. Set the stone down.

Outside, I heard Preston's footsteps in the corridor. Heading away from our quarters. Toward the private recovery den on the east wing.

Where Sky would be waiting.

Seraphine growled. *Let us follow him. Let us see.*

"No," I said softly. "Not yet. We don't chase. We document. We build the case. And when we're ready—"

*We destroy him.*

"Exactly."

I pulled out my tablet and opened a new file. Started drafting the mate-bond rejection statement I would deliver before the full pack when the time came. The formal language was already forming in my mind, precise and unshakable.

I, Autumn Brooks, Head Healer of Ironpeak, reject you, Preston Lane, as my mate and Alpha.

But not yet.

First, I would give him enough rope to hang himself.

And I would make absolutely certain the entire pack was watching when he did.
