Chapter 3

The rogue’s black claws pricked my skin. A warm bead of blood traced a slow line down my collarbone.

Beyond the locked iron door, the muffled bass from the main warehouse suddenly hitched.

Then came the sound of Jolene’s voice. It was high, breathless, and perfectly pitched to carry down the concrete corridor.

"Marcellus... help me... I can’t breathe!"

I knew her vitals hadn't even jumped. Her pulse was probably steady as a metronome. It was a practiced, delicate collapse.

A beat later, Marcellus’s voice tore through the drywall. Sharp. Urgent. Terrified.

"Jolene! Silas, clear the floor! Get the truck idling right now!"

For one hollow, pathetic second, something stupid in my chest waited. I waited for his heavy tread to turn down the hall. I waited for him to remember that he had sent me into the back rooms of a rogue den. I waited for the man who had eaten at my table for ten years to check the dark.

Instead, his boots hammered the opposite direction, toward the front gravel yard.

The heavy double doors of the compound slammed shut. A few seconds later, the low, familiar rumble of his black truck vibrated through the floorboards. The engine revved, tires spat gravel, and the sound faded into the night pines.

He was gone.

He hadn’t checked. He hadn’t sent an enforcer. He had left me in the dark with claws against my throat, all to carry a fainting liar to safety.

The last microscopic thread of what I felt for Marcellus Montgomery snapped. The void it left behind was cold and quiet.

"Looks like your Alpha threw you away, little bird," the lead rogue rasped. His breath smelled of spoiled meat and cheap whiskey. His yellow eyes widened, drinking in my stillness. "No pack. No wolf. Nobody to hear you scream."

His claws dug half an inch deeper into my flesh. Pain flared white-hot across my neck, blood soaking into my already torn shirt.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg.

Instead, I looked down at my left wrist.

Under the frayed cuff of my sleeve lay the silver-white scar. It was thin, slightly raised, carved into my flesh before I had words to ask why. My father had put it there. Helen had told me never to show it to anyone, never to let an Alpha see.

*When the dark takes everything,* my father’s forgotten whisper echoed in my blood, *call home.*

I didn't hesitate.

I drove my thumbnail straight into the center of the scar.

I pressed hard, tearing through the pale tissue until the skin split wide. Fresh, bright blood welled to the surface.

The reaction was instantaneous.

The mark didn't just bleed—it burned. A searing, blinding heat tore through my veins like molten gold. It wasn't pain; it was power. An ancient, terrifying pulse thrummed from my wrist, vibrating the concrete floor beneath our boots. The air turned heavy, tasting sharply of ozone and winter frost.

The rogue froze. His yellow eyes shrunk to pinpricks. His hand hesitated at my neck, nostrils flaring as he caught the sudden, electric shift in the air.

"What did you do?" he whispered, his voice cracking.

Hundreds of miles away, beyond the high crags and frozen timberline, something massive answered the call.

Then the world ripped apart.

The far concrete wall didn't just crack. It exploded inward.

A deafening roar shattered the drywall and sent cinderblocks flying like shrapnel. A shockwave of pure, crushing pressure dropped the two rogues behind the leader instantly to their knees. The dust billowed thick and gray, illuminated only by the flickering bulb above.

Out of the wreckage stepped a monster.

It wasn't an Alpha wolf. It was three meters of towering, primeval nightmare.

Massive shoulders scraped the ceiling beams, thick with midnight-black and silver fur. His claws were three times the width of any pack fighter's, long as daggers and black as obsidian. His aura didn't just demand submission—it suffocated the room, sucking the very oxygen out of our lungs.

A Lycan.

Quinton’s fighters surged into the hall, weapons drawn, shouting in panic.

The Lycan didn't roar. He moved with cold, horrifying speed.

A single backhand swipe sent the rogue leader flying across the corridor. His skull shattered against the iron door with a sickening crack, dead before he hit the ground. The beast lunged forward, catching two armed guards by their throats, crushing their windpipes in one fluid motion before tossing their bodies aside like ragdolls. It wasn't a fight. It was an extermination.

Blood coated the walls. In less than twenty seconds, the corridor went entirely still.

My knees gave out. I slid down the iron door, my strength finally drained, my head tilting back against the cold metal. My collarbone burned, and the wound on my neck dripped steady red onto my lap.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps approached.

The Lycan stopped inches from me. The heat radiating off his body was like an open furnace. His chest heaved, fur bristling, covered in dark gore that wasn't his.

I looked up into his eyes. They weren't the pale yellow of pack wolves, but deep, molten gold.

I didn't feel fear. I was too tired for fear. I just looked at him, my chin lifted, waiting for the end.

The giant didn't strike.

Slowly, carefully, the massive beast lowered himself to the blood-spattered floor. Enormous, furred arms slid beneath my shoulders and knees. He lifted me with impossible gentleness, pulling me flush against his broad chest.

He carried me out through the shattered wall, stepping over rubble and twisted rebar into the freezing night.

In the compound's gravel yard, a line of heavy armored trucks waited, black paint gleaming under the moonlight. On the door of the lead vehicle was a silver crest—a roaring wolf crowned in stars.

The Lycan Court.

He climbed into the back of the armored cabin, shielding my battered body from the mountain wind. The door slammed shut, cutting off the stench of rust and rotting rogues.

As the vehicle accelerated smoothly into the dark, a scent enveloped me.

It wasn't the honeysuckle of Jolene, or the stale cedar Marcellus carried.

It was dark cedar and the wild, sharp electricity of a thunderstorm.

Deep beneath my ribs, the inner wolf that had stayed silent for twenty-six years stirred in the dark, letting out a soft, low hum of recognition.

My vision blurred at the edges. My head fell back against the Lycan’s chest, and the darkness finally pulled me under.
