Chapter 1

At 7:14 on a Tuesday morning, I walked into the pack clinic to adjust my mother’s IV and found Jolene Foster holding the plastic feed line.

Two Shadowmere enforcers flanked the door behind her.

The room smelled sickeningly sweet. Over the clean scent of rubbing alcohol lay a thick cloud of honeysuckle—and beneath that, Marcellus’s dark cedar musk. It clung heavily to the silk fabric around Jolene’s collar. She had spent the night in his bed.

"Drop the line, Jolene," I said. My voice was completely flat.

Jolene gave me a practiced, mournful smile. "Helen has suffered far too long, Penelope. Keeping her artificially tethered to life with wolfsbane antidotes is an unnatural violation of the Moon Goddess’s will. We must allow natural harmony to take its course."

"She took a poisoned arrow meant for your Alpha," I said, stepping between her manicured hands and the IV stand. "Touch that valve, and I will snap your wrist."

For three seconds, ten years of my unacknowledged authority held the room silent. The guards shifted their weight. Jolene’s smile thinned.

Then heavy footsteps hit the linoleum behind me.

Marcellus stopped in the open doorway. His broad shoulders blocked the light. His dark eyes found mine, and for one desperate beat, I expected the man who had shared my table for a decade to honor the blood debt he owed.

Instead, his expression turned to stone.

"Step back, Penelope," he said.

He didn't just speak. He dropped his Alpha tone like a hammer.

The biological command slammed into my spine like liquid lead. My joints locked instantly. My vocal cords snapped shut, choking off the breath in my lungs. My muscles turned to solid stone under the absolute force of his voice. In my chest, the unsealed mate bond we had carried for ten years shuddered, went entirely cold, and felt as empty as a stripped room.

*No,* I screamed behind clenched teeth, but not a single sound left my lips.

"Let her pass naturally," Marcellus said, keeping his right hand raised toward me, fingers spread to maintain the pressure of his aura.

Jolene didn't hesitate. She gripped the clear tubing and yanked it sideways.

The plastic hub snapped. Antidote fluid splattered across my boots and soaked into the floor.

In the hospital bed, my mother convulsed. Her back arched off the mattress. Black lines of resumed wolfsbane poisoning raced through the skin of her neck, blooming like rotten flowers. She choked, dark blood pooling at the corner of her lips, her eyes rolling back.

I stood three feet away, paralyzed in my own flesh, forced to watch her die.

It took fifty-two minutes. Marcellus never looked away. He kept his hand raised in command until her heart monitor flattened into a continuous, high-pitched scream.

He lowered his arm, smoothed his cuffs, and offered his elbow to Jolene. "Silas will handle the paperwork," he murmured, and walked out without looking at me again.

The command shattered.

I hit the floor on my hands and knees. But my inner wolf—silent and presumed dead since my sixteenth birthday—did not cower.

Deep inside my chest, something colossal slammed against its cage. A wave of suffocating heat ripped through my veins, and molten gold flared violently behind my eyelids. The low, tectonic grinding of an awakening Alpha bloodline shook my ribs with enough force to rattle my jaw.

*Get up,* a voice snarled from the dark of my mind.

I didn't shed a single tear.

I stood up, walked over to the stainless steel counter, and pulled an amber glass vial from my pocket. Every morning for ten years, I had brewed Marcellus a specialized wolfsbane-resistance tonic, balancing silver-leaf and mountain root so he could walk into rogue ambushes untouched.

I popped the cork. I tilted the bottle over the sink and watched the dark syrup spiral down the drain until the glass was dry.

He would never taste it again.

Thirty minutes later, when I returned from the supply closet with a clean shroud, the gurney was empty.

A terrified young nurse kept her eyes fixed on the floor. "Jolene ordered an immediate 'return to nature' burial beyond pack borders. Alpha Marcellus signed the dispatch. They dumped her across the southern river."

Rogue territory.

I ran across the border on foot, in human skin. It took two hours of frantic tracking through thorn thickets to follow the wheel ruts into the wasteland.

The smell reached me before the clearing did: wild pine, rotting carrion, and my mother’s fading lavender scent.

In a sunlit ditch, three feral rogues were tearing at the gray canvas wrapped around her body.

Rage exploded in my skull. I didn't think; I lunged.

I smashed a jagged oak branch across the nearest rogue's snout, the wood splintering into his eyes. Claws raked my collarbone, shredding my jacket and cutting flesh down to the muscle. I didn't feel it. I sank my human teeth into another wolf's throat, spitting rank fur and hot blood, kicking his ribs until the bone snapped under my heel. I fought like a cornered beast until the remaining two scrambled into the brush with bloody snarls.

Silence fell over the red dirt.

I collapsed across my mother’s cold chest, my torn arms wrapping around her shoulders. Her skin was gray, covered in tooth marks and gravel. And there, bleeding into the dead pine needles with no witnesses, the first sob tore out of my throat, ragged and ugly.

I stripped off my shredded flannel to wrap her head and hands, dragging her into a low rock hollow beneath thick briars. I smeared my own blood on the entrance stone to mask her scent.

By dusk, I dragged my battered body back to the Shadowmere perimeter fence, leaning against the wire to keep from collapsing.

Across the gravel driveway, Marcellus’s black truck was idling near the armory. Jolene leaned out the open passenger window, laughing under the yellow security floodlights, while two armed enforcers loaded heavy silver-staked crates into the truck bed for Quinton Ruiz’s gathering.
