Chapter 3

Elias Thorne had twenty-two hours to make a miracle, and he did it in nineteen.

Louisa sent him to me at dawn, a lean, silver-haired man from the Ashwood Pack who measured me without a single wasted word, his pins moving like he'd done this a thousand times in his sleep. "Black-and-gold," he murmured, studying my shoulders, my waist, the color of my eyes. "Not the gold Kinsley Webb wears. The gold that costs something." He didn't ask why. He didn't ask about Jace at all. When Louisa's name opens a door, apparently it opens it all the way.

By the second evening, I stood in front of the same mirror where Jace had stripped the mantle off my shoulders, and I didn't recognize the woman looking back.

The gown was black silk that moved like water, cut low across the collarbone, with gold thread worked through the bodice in a pattern like flames caught mid-rise. No sleeves. No shield. My hair I left down, loose over my shoulders for the first time in five years, because Jace had always said pinned-up hair looked "more composed." I hadn't washed away the pull of my own scent with the floral suppressant oil the Luna attendants kept stocked in every bathroom. Tonight, I let it breathe.

Blackthorn and wildfire. My wolf's scent, finally unshackled.

I walked into the banquet hall alone. No escort. No hesitation. The doors were still open from the receiving line, and I simply stepped through them like I belonged there, because I did.

Conversation didn't stop all at once. It stuttered, table by table, like a wave losing its rhythm. I felt it before I saw it — heads turning, glasses pausing halfway to lips, a Beta from the Thornfield Pack forgetting the end of his own sentence. My scent moved through that hall before I did, and unmated Alphas lifted their heads like wolves catching a scent on the wind for the first time in years.

I didn't look at the dais. I didn't need to.

I crossed to a table near the center, where a cluster of allied representatives sat discussing the coastal trade corridor dispute that had been dragging on for two seasons. I pulled out a chair myself before anyone could rise to do it for me, and I said, "I hope I'm not interrupting. I've read the Ashwood proposal on the northern route. It has a flaw in the toll structure."

The Ashwood delegate — the same woman in dark green who'd whispered behind her champagne glass the night before — blinked at me like I'd spoken in another language. Then she leaned forward, genuinely interested. "Go on."

So I did. I talked tariffs and patrol schedules and seasonal migration routes for the better part of an hour, calm and precise, while somewhere behind me I could feel Jace's attention like a physical weight pressed against my spine.

I never turned around.

I could feel his wolf clawing at him — I knew that particular silence in the bond, the static hum that meant his inner Wolf was awake and straining. Five years of my scent hidden under lavender oil and quiet obedience, and tonight it hit him unfiltered, undiluted, impossible to ignore. He couldn't cross the room to me without admitting, in front of every allied Alpha in that hall, that the woman in black and gold outshining his new Luna was the mate he'd humiliated the night before.

So he stayed on the dais. And I never gave him the satisfaction of looking.

I didn't need to see his face to know it was the longest night of his life.

By morning, I had moved out of the Alpha quarters.

It took less than an hour. I packed the wooden box, my clothes, the black-and-gold gown folded carefully in tissue paper, and I carried everything myself to a small room in the east wing — the kind given to unranked staff, with a narrow bed and a window that looked out over the kennels. I didn't ask permission. I didn't leave a note.

Then I did the second thing.

Louisa had found it buried in an obscure clause of pack law, the kind no one bothered reading because no one expected to need it: an unmarked mate retains full authority over her own end of the mind-link. A marked Luna loses that right the moment the bond is sealed. I had never been marked.

So I closed the channel.

I felt it happen — a door swinging shut somewhere behind my ribs, the low hum of Jace's presence in my mind going abruptly, permanently silent. For five years that hum had been background noise, comforting in its constancy. Now the quiet felt like the first full breath I'd taken since I was eighteen.

That afternoon, Marcus Doyle knocked on my door. He didn't come in. He stood in the hallway with his hands in his pockets, looking like a man who'd rather be anywhere else.

"Jace wants you in his study," he said.

"Tell him no," I said.

Marcus studied me for a long moment — really studied me, the way he hadn't in years. Then he nodded once, turned, and walked away without another word.
