Chapter 3

My wolf broke her silence at four in the morning.

I was alone in the kitchen. The pre-dawn shift was mine—Petra had reassigned it three days ago, another small cruelty disguised as logistics. I was elbow-deep in dishwater when the bond-ache hit.

Not the dull flicker I had grown used to. Not the ghost-pulse that kept me awake at night. This was sharp, immediate, a white-hot spike behind my sternum that made me gasp and grip the edge of the counter hard enough that my knuckles went bloodless.

And then my wolf surged.

She had been silent since the great hall. Three weeks of careful, deliberate quiet while I worked and catalogued and waited. I had thought maybe the suppression had reached her too—that whatever Easton had done to mute the bond had muted her along with it.

I was wrong.

She came forward with a snarl that rattled my ribs from the inside, raking at the bond like a wolf clawing at a locked door. Not grief. Not the howl I had been bracing for. Rage. Pure, focused, feral rage—at the thing strangling us, at the chemical lie wrapped around our throat, at the Alpha who had dared.

I let her.

Sixty seconds. I gripped the counter and I let her tear at the suppression with everything she had, feeling the muted connection shudder under the assault. It did not break. It did not open. But it moved—just slightly, just enough—and the sensation was not death.

It was something strangled trying to breathe.

When the minute was up, I pulled her back. She resisted, snarling, and then she went quiet again with a deliberateness that felt like strategy rather than surrender.

I dried my hands. I went to my quarters. I opened my journal to a clean page and I wrote:

*The bond does not ache like severance. It aches like suppression. There is a difference. I know what it means now.*

I dated it. I closed the journal. I pressed my thumb against the warm mark on my neck and I felt my wolf settle behind my ribs, waiting.

The Pack Banquet was held three weeks after Easton's declaration.

I served wine at the back of the hall. Petra had given me the assignment herself, her face carefully neutral, and I had taken the decanter without comment. The neighboring Alpha—Marcus Thorn, from the Riverbend Pack—sat at the high table with his Beta, both of them dressed in formal territorial colors. This was the alliance dinner Easton had been negotiating for six months. I had written half the treaty clauses myself.

Amber sat at Easton's right side wearing my collar and a silk gown the color of fresh blood. She leaned into him when he spoke, her hand on his forearm, performing intimacy with the studied precision of someone who had rehearsed it.

Easton dragged his jaw along her throat.

It was a public scent-marking. Deliberate. Dominant. The kind of display an Alpha made when he wanted every wolf in the room to understand exactly who his mate was. Amber tilted her head back, exposing her throat, and smiled.

Across the table, Marcus Thorn's expression went carefully blank. His Beta looked down at his plate.

I kept pouring.

Easton's hand tightened on Amber's waist. Not the loose, easy touch of a bonded mate. The grip of a man managing an image. His thumb pressed into the silk hard enough that I saw the fabric compress, and Amber's smile thinned at the edges before she smoothed it back into place.

I moved to the next table. Refilled a glass. Moved again.

Across the hall, Delia sat near the healer's alcove with her hands folded in her lap. Our eyes met. She gave the smallest nod—so brief I might have imagined it if I had not been watching for it.

I kept pouring.

The banquet lasted three hours. I refilled wine. I cleared plates. I stood against the wall during the toasts and I watched Easton's hand stay locked on Amber's waist the entire time, his grip never loosening, his jaw tight in a way that had nothing to do with affection.

When the neighboring Alpha finally stood to leave, Marcus Thorn shook Easton's hand with the mechanical courtesy of a wolf fulfilling a contract. He did not congratulate him on his mate. He did not ask to meet Amber formally.

He left.

I carried the empty decanter back to the kitchens and I added Marcus Thorn's name to my witness list.

---

Easton came to the Omega quarters that night.

I heard his footsteps in the corridor—the deliberate, measured pace of a dominant wolf who knew exactly how much sound he made and had chosen not to soften it. He stopped outside my door.

He did not knock.

"Alana." His voice came through the wood, controlled and flat. Not the Alpha tone. Not yet. "I know you're awake."

I sat on my cot and I said nothing.

"What I did was necessary." A pause. "The pack's stability required it. You understand that."

I pressed my thumb against the mark on my neck. It was warm.

"You will be protected as an Omega of this pack. You have my word. I ask only for your silence during the formal procedures."

The formal procedures. The alliance ratifications. The Council reports. The dozen small legal mechanisms that would cement Amber's position and erase mine from every official record.

I still said nothing.

"Alana." The Alpha tone bled into his voice now, just at the edges—a warning, a command he had not yet fully deployed. "This benefits no one if you make it difficult."

I looked at the door. I could feel him on the other side of it—not through the bond, which was still muted and strangled, but through the simple animal awareness of a wolf standing three feet away. He was afraid. Not of me. Of what I knew.

Except I did not know anything yet.

But I would.

Twenty minutes passed. His breathing was audible through the wood—controlled, deliberate, the rhythm of a man managing his own tells.

Finally, he left.

I opened my journal. I wrote the date. I wrote every word he had said, exactly as he had said it. And then I wrote:

*He is afraid of what I know. He does not yet understand that I know nothing yet—but I will.*

I closed the journal. I lay down on the thin cot. I pressed my hand flat against my chest and I felt my wolf stir, awake and waiting and absolutely, unshakably certain.

The bond ached.

But it was alive.
