Chapter 2

The heavy oak door of our private quarters closed behind us with a decisive thud. I leaned against it, my fingers still clutching my Luna pendant as I faced Robert. The silence between us stretched taut like a bowstring ready to snap.

"You need to explain," I finally said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Now."

Robert paced before the fireplace, his Alpha aura flickering with agitation. Through our mate bond, I could feel his wolf clawing at his consciousness—restless, conflicted, drawn to the scent that had disrupted our carefully constructed world.

"Her name is Emma Cole," he began, running a hand through his dark hair—a nervous gesture I'd come to recognize over our years together. "We dated in college. On and off for about ten years."

"Ten years?" The words felt like ice in my mouth. "You never mentioned her."

He stopped pacing, his eyes meeting mine with something like desperation. "Because it wasn't important. It was toxic, Fiona. We were terrible together."

"Yet you kept her in your life for a decade," I observed, moving to the window that overlooked our territory. The moon hung heavy in the sky, a silent witness to our unraveling.

"I never knew she was my fated mate," Robert insisted, his voice breaking slightly. "I swear it, Fiona. The scent... it never manifested like this before."

I turned to face him, studying the man I'd built my life around. "And now?"

"Now I..." He faltered, pain flashing across his features as he pressed a hand to his chest.

I gasped as a sharp, tearing sensation ripped through my own chest—the first physical manifestation of our fracturing mate bond. Robert stumbled toward me, his eyes wide with alarm.

"Fiona!" He reached for me, but I stepped back.

"Don't," I whispered, another wave of pain washing through me. "Just don't."

---

The full moon hung like a silver medallion above the forest clearing as our pack gathered for the monthly run. I stood at the edge of the group, Scarlet pressed protectively against my side. The air was thick with tension—everyone knew about Emma's claim and Robert's reaction.

"Remember what I told you," I murmured to Scarlet. "Stay close to Marcus during the run."

She nodded solemnly, her young face serious beyond her years. "What about you, Mom?"

"I'll be fine," I assured her, though the ache in my chest suggested otherwise.

A commotion at the edge of the clearing drew everyone's attention. Emma strode into the gathering, wearing running clothes that hugged every curve. She'd been invited as a "guest"—Robert's decision, not mine.

"Alpha," she greeted Robert with a slight bow that somehow managed to be both respectful and intimate.

Robert's nostrils flared as her scent wafted toward him. I watched his pupils dilate, his breathing quicken. The primal response of an Alpha to his supposed fated mate.

"Let's begin," I announced, stepping forward with the authority of Luna. "Tonight we honor the Moon Goddess with our run."

The pack shifted into their wolf forms, a chorus of snarls and growls filling the night air. I transformed smoothly, my silver-white wolf form emerging as Scarlet's smaller russet one pressed against my flank.

We took our positions at the head of the formation—Robert's massive black wolf form beside mine, Scarlet and Marcus slightly behind us. The pack followed in ranks according to their status.

As we began to run, I felt Robert's presence through our bond, but it was distracted, fractured. Emma's wolf—a sleek brown creature with calculating eyes—kept pace near the front, her scent deliberately amplified.

Halfway through the run, I realized Robert was no longer beside me. Through the trees, I caught glimpses of his black form veering away, following Emma deeper into the forest. The pack's energy shifted as whispers passed through mind-links—confusion, doubt, judgment.

I maintained my position at the front, refusing to show weakness even as my heart splintered further.

---

The post-run gathering was held in the clearing, bonfires blazing as wolves returned to human form. I stood among our elite warriors, a glass of wine untouched in my hand as I watched Robert emerge from the trees—alone.

Emma appeared moments later, her smile triumphant as she approached the group. Her eyes found mine across the firelight.

"It's interesting," she said loudly enough for everyone to hear, "how a rogue can rise to Luna status through manipulation rather than birthright."

The warriors shifted uncomfortably, their gazes darting between us.

"But we all know," Emma continued, moving closer to Robert, "that a true Alpha's heart belongs to his fated mate."

I felt the weight of every stare as my Luna aura expanded outward, cold and controlled. The pain in my chest was nearly unbearable, but I would not show weakness—not here, not now.

"Miss Cole," I said, my Luna tone vibrating with authority. "You have overstepped your welcome."

Robert looked between us, conflict etched across his features as his wolf howled within him.

"Marcus," I called to our Gamma, never taking my eyes off Emma. "Please escort our guest off pack grounds immediately."

Emma's smile faltered as two warriors moved to flank her. The look she gave me promised this was far from over—and deep inside, where our mate bond was slowly tearing apart, I knew she was right.
