Chapter 1

I always knew I was the backup plan. I just never let myself say it out loud.

Growing up in the Griffin household meant learning early that there were two kinds of daughters. There was Elena — golden, radiant, the one my parents pointed to at pack gatherings like she was a trophy they'd won. And then there was me. Alivia. The quiet one. The useful one. The one who stayed.

When Elena was sixteen, her wolf awakened in a blaze of silver light that the whole pack talked about for weeks. Mine never came. Thirteen passed, then fourteen, fifteen, sixteen. Nothing. Just silence where my wolf was supposed to be. The pack healers called it a stunted awakening. My mother called it an embarrassment. My father stopped bringing me to formal pack functions after a while. Why parade the broken one?

So when Elena ran — when she looked at the arranged mating with Alpha Ryker of the Ironveil Pack and simply decided she didn't want it — I was the one who stepped forward. Not because anyone asked me nicely. Because my parents sat me down and told me it was my duty. Because I had spent seven years quietly, stupidly in love with Ryker from a distance, ever since the night of my Come of Age Ceremony when his scent hit me like a fist to the chest. Dark cedar and smoke. I had told myself it meant something.

It didn't.

Three years as his Luna taught me that. Three years of managing the pack house, scheduling warrior rotations, sitting at his right hand at banquets while he looked through me like I was furniture. Three years of mixing poultices for the old battle wounds along his ribs that never fully healed, of tracking his diet so the internal scarring wouldn't flare up, of waking at two in the morning when his wolf was restless and sitting outside his door because I didn't know what else to do with the ache in my chest.

He never once asked how I was doing.

I told myself that was fine. I told myself I was building something. That patience was a kind of love, and eventually he would see me.

I was still telling myself that the morning I sat on the cold tile of the pack house bathroom, staring at the test in my hands.

Two lines. Clear as anything.

My fingers were shaking. Not from fear — or not only from fear. There was something else underneath it, something embarrassingly fragile and bright. Hope. The stupid, stubborn kind that survives even after everything tries to kill it. I pressed one hand flat against my stomach and thought: maybe now. Maybe this changes things. Maybe he looks at me differently when I tell him.

I gave myself exactly two minutes to feel that. Then I washed my face, straightened my shirt, and walked down the hall to his study.

The door was already open a crack. I could hear him inside, the low scrape of a chair, the rustle of papers. I knocked twice and pushed it open.

Ryker was sitting behind his desk. He didn't look up right away. He had that particular stillness he got when he was thinking through something difficult — jaw set, one hand flat on the desk surface, eyes fixed on whatever was in front of him. He was still wearing his training clothes from the morning session. There was a faint bruise along his jaw that hadn't been there yesterday.

I opened my mouth.

He slid a piece of paper across the desk before I could say a single word.

I looked at it. Then I looked at him.

He met my eyes for the first time in what felt like days. His expression was completely flat.

"Read it," he said.

I picked it up. The handwriting was his — sharp, deliberate, the letters pressed hard into the page like he'd been bearing down with the pen. It took me three seconds to understand what I was reading. Then three more to accept it.

A rejection speech. Formal. Every word in the correct ritual order.

The paper made a small sound as my grip tightened.

"Ryker." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I came here to tell you something."

"It doesn't matter." He leaned back in his chair. "Elena is back. She's in Ironveil territory as of this morning. I've already spoken with her."

The name landed like a stone dropped into still water. I felt the ripples move through me.

"I'm pregnant," I said.

Something shifted in his face. Not softness. More like a door closing.

"That's not possible," he said.

"I took the test this morning. Two lines, Ryker. I can show you —"

"I have a wolf-fertility block." His voice was even. Practiced. Like he'd rehearsed this part. "It's been documented. Whatever that test is showing, it isn't mine."

The words hit me somewhere below the ribs. I stood there for a moment, just breathing, the paper still in my hand.

A wolf-fertility block. I was his Luna. I had access to every medical record in this pack house. I had personally reviewed his healer files a dozen times to manage his wound care. There was no wolf-fertility block. There had never been a wolf-fertility block.

He was lying. Sitting behind his desk in his training clothes with a bruise on his jaw, looking at me with those flat gray eyes, and lying to my face about our child.

"You're lying," I said quietly.

"Read the paper, Alivia."

I looked down at it again. At the careful, formal lines of the rejection rite. At my own name written there in his handwriting, reduced to a formality to be discarded.

Somewhere deep inside me, in the place that had been silent for twenty-three years, something stirred.

It was small at first. Just a flicker of heat, low and unfamiliar. Then it grew.
