My Alpha Chose His Secretary Over His True Mate Chapter 1

At exactly eight o’clock on a Friday night, the mate mark on my collarbone went ice-cold.

Bryce stood across from me on the ceremonial altar of the Grand Hall. I wore the white silk Luna dress I had spent three months fitting. He wore his formal Alpha suit, but he didn’t smell like cedar anymore. He smelled like jasmine and honey. It was the exact perfume his secretary, Vanessa, had been wearing for the last six months.

He didn’t reach for my hands. He didn't speak the bonding vow.

Instead, he leveled his gaze at my face and spoke in a flat, carrying voice:

"I, Bryce, Alpha of Ashveil Pack, reject you, Freya Knight, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit me like an iron spike through the chest.

The mate bond snapped. It didn't just break; it felt like a heavy door slamming shut in an empty house. The warm pulse on the side of my neck died instantly, leaving behind a cold, hollow ache. Deep in my ribs, my wolf—sick and sluggish from the bitter tea Vanessa had brought me every morning this past year—reared up with a feral, teeth-bared snarl. She roared with pure fury, snapping at the air between us, before the shock hit her. Then she crashed down hard, collapsing into a silence so deep it felt like an organ had been carved out of my chest.

I swayed once. But I didn't fall. And I didn't beg.

I pressed my thumb hard against the dead skin on my neck, digging my nail in until the sharp pain grounded me.

Bryce didn't look at me again. He turned toward the front row of the assembly.

"Step forward, Vanessa," he said.

Vanessa was already moving. She had been standing at the edge of the aisle the whole time, dressed in crimson silk, perfectly poised. She climbed the steps with smooth confidence and took Bryce’s arm. Her fingers wrapped around his bicep with the easy familiarity of a woman who had practiced the gesture behind closed doors for months.

"Meet your new Luna," Bryce announced to the crowded hall.

No one gasped. Three hundred ranked wolves sat in dead silence, their eyes fixed on Vanessa’s bright, winning smile. Not a single person looked at the altar where I stood. Just like that, three years of keeping Bryce’s house, balancing his accounts, and shielding him from council politics were wiped clean.

"Dalton," Bryce commanded.

He dropped his Alpha tone into the word. The sheer weight of it slammed into the back of my neck like a dropped stone, trying to force my spine to bend. My knees shook. I bit the inside of my cheek until warm copper flooded my tongue, using the sting to fight the pressure. I forced my chin up and stared Bryce dead in the eyes until he looked away.

"Remove the rogue," Bryce said quietly.

Heavy footsteps came up the platform stairs. A hand clamped around my upper arm like a vice.

It was Dalton. My mother’s brother. My uncle.

He didn't look at my face. He gripped my arm with brutal efficiency and hauled me down the center aisle. My heels scraped across the polished marble. I passed families I had fed, warriors whose broken bones I had helped tend when our pack hospital was overwhelmed. Every single one of them stared fixedly at the floor.

Dalton dragged me through the heavy oak doors, down the gravel path, and straight to the edge of the northern forest.

The winter air hit me like a slap. Without my wolf to regulate my body heat, the frost bit into my bare shoulders, making my teeth chatter instantly.

At the pack boundary stone, Dalton let go of me. I stumbled, catching myself against the rough, icy granite.

He unbuttoned his coat and pulled out a short iron rod tipped with a heavy silver crest. He didn't hesitate. He caught my left forearm, turned my wrist upward, and pressed the burning silver directly into my flesh.

A hiss of steam rose between us. The smell of scorched skin filled the cold air.

Agony tore through my nervous system, white-hot and blinding. I locked my jaw, grinding my molars together until my gums bled, but I didn't give him a scream. Not a single sound.

Three seconds later, he pulled the silver away. A jagged, blistered brand marred my pale skin—the mark of an exiled rogue.

"Your link to the Ashveil pack mind is severed," Dalton recited, his voice completely flat, like an accountant reading off an invoice. "Your name is struck from the pack registry. Step across the line, Freya. You are no longer permitted on pack land."

He still hadn't looked into my eyes.

He turned around and walked back toward the lights of the hall. Behind him, the boundary wards flared blue and hummed shut with a sharp, electric snap.

The forest was pitch black. Snow fell in heavy flakes, sticking to my thin silk gown. My wrist throbbed with a sickening, rhythmic heat, and the poison still lingering in my blood made my legs feel like lead.

I stood alone in the dark.

I reached inside the collar of my dress. My fingers found the thin silver chain around my neck and closed tightly around the heavy, cold iron key resting against my collarbone—the key to my grandfather's private vault in the old mountains.

I tucked the key under my dress, pressed my burned wrist tight against my ribs to muffle the sting, and took my first step into the deep snow.

Behind me, Bryce’s voice boomed through the distant pack loudspeakers, carrying clearly over the frozen pines:

"Under territorial consolidation law, all Knight estate deeds are hereby transferred to the Alpha’s direct custody—"

Farther down the boundary line, the heavy thud of an axe bit into wood, beginning the work of chopping down my family’s crest from the border gate.
