Chapter 1

Maya's POV

Being in the same class with a guy who makes me giggle and tickle each time I set my eyes on him or he sets his eyes on me is the greatest fantasy.

Kennedy Jackson is that guy.

I can remember back in those days when we were kids and I'd come to live in the Jackson's estate newly, we were so close, child besties. My parents were wealthy and noble, recognized in the whole of New York City but tragedy struck when no one expected it and our business crumbled. We were a huge telecommunication giant but fraud committed by some of the relatives who were executives in the company destroyed the massive wealth my parents built.

We sank into depth and at the bridge of despair, the Jackson's, the leading capitalist family in the US came to our help but as nothing comes for free, we had to pay them in another way. Though it would never be enough for the huge millions of dollars they gave us to settle our debts, my parents turned servants. I didn't know if it was quite a generational servitude since I was just a kid, I was just smart enough to grab some of that information into my head.

After my dad and mom served in the estate where the Jackson's lived, they retired. I was happy, thinking now we can return back to our home to live a happy life but it wasn't so.

“Maya, it's now your turn. Make sure you remain a good girl. We don't want any complaints.” Mom said as she packed with dad.

“What are you saying, mom? Am I not coming with you?” I remembered asking her with a twisted face.

“No, you can't. You have to serve the Jackson's family, they have done so much for us and our years of servitude isn't even enough to repay them. You have to continue after us, perhaps if you please them they might let you marry their son, your best friend and only then can you be freed.” She winked at me. Her last statement is quite sarcastic at the same time sounding true. I knew she wanted to give me a hope that will motivate me to stay.

Kennedy, my best friend which she was talking of, is the first and only son of the President of Jackson's Conglomerate. He's just three years older than me, since we were the only kiddos in the house, we often played together. Status wasn't a barrier, his parents treated me like their child and we attended the same elite school up till now we are in college.

I can remember later on when he reminded me of my mom's words. “I'll marry you when you reach eighteen,” he had said one day while playing with our toys in the nursery. I'd asked if we would continue to be best friends forever.

I had a very wide smile, my heart beamed with happiness as he mentioned this and as I grew up with the Jackson's, this became my daily assurance to be the good girl that my mom urged me to be.

Things changed however when we entered our teenage years, that's when Jemina, a girl that attended the same high school with us came into his life. This seemed to be a pretty big obstacle to my dream of being with him, amidst the struggles and relenting attention from Kennedy, I refused to give up.

I couldn't just wait to turn eighteen and remind him of that promise he made to me.

Before I knew it, I was turning eighteen.

""""""""""

Early in the morning, I woke up with a great enthusiasm and that enthusiasm was revealed in the way I did things. I made sure I had a very strong scented flavor in my body wash, the perf and body spray I applied were unthinkable, scents which are designed to last for twenty-four hours.

No wonder when I walked into class today, everyone turned their eyes to me. I had been someone no one dared to look at. Though I'm beautiful, it's disguised under my poor appearance. No one wants to mingle with someone who is poor. Due to my condition, I always dress in worn-out, sometimes patched clothes but today is quite different.

I used my savings to purchase myself a yellow crop top which reveals my tummy, a pair of designer popstar trousers and black designer sneakers. Everything cost three hundred dollars, a huge amount for a girl of my status. I did this to attack good luck, to attract my mate. My efforts aren't in vain as my instinct has identified the only guy whom she is fated to.

As I walked through the door with all eyes on me, I felt a strong but strange aura overtake me. I haven't felt this way before. A few seconds later, my heart screamed right inside me.

Looks like we're gonna get noticed by him today!

Kennedy Jackson in particular.

"What a fuck!" I scream in surprise as my gaze directs me to Kennedy, seated seven rows from the first row where I stay. If someone had told me I would be fated to a charming billionaire prince like him, I wouldn't believe it. Kennedy is a guy most girls are ready to die for, he is fucking handsome, bastardly rich but keeps his lifestyle introverted at times. I liked him this way, I loved him too much and was already desiring him deeply.

"Yeah, we've made it but I hope we will cope with an aloof nigga like him!" My instinct, who has become so excited, exclaims. I giggle.

"Hey Ken!" I smile, waving and taking myself to his seat where he is staring right at my direction. His charming blue eyes, dreamy and flirty looking at me makes me want to strip myself and walk naked before him.

He parts his lips to say something when the door opens and the course lecturer walks in. A grunt escapes my throat, my expectation hanging aloof with no hope of revival. This is the first time I have the perfect privilege to go and talk to him so close in class. He has always been aloof, fully aware that girls like him. I simply don't exist in his eyes, even at home. Now that the unexpected was to occur, the unexpected in a different dimension occurred which is our course lecturer walking in. Worst is that his class is three hours long and it's our last class for the day. After this, most students are mostly expected to go home as always.

"Settle down class, we've got a special topic to treat today!" Saying this, he brings out his long notes, hardcover, and starts to scan through it. This takes about ten minutes, then my mind returns to Kennedy, I steal flirty glances at him. On his face, it is supposed to be happiness but I find nothing but an expression of shock. My instinct tells me that. Being a dreamy-eyed guy, no one knows when he is angry or downcast except he shows it by his speech and actions.

Kennedy notices the way I look at him and the frequency, even while the lecturer is taking us to the class. He pulls off a sheet of paper, scribbles something on it and passes down to me, urging the guys on the lines of row to help me. When the letter reaches me, my hormones jump up, causing a sudden increase in my heart beat. I can't wait to see what's written on it. Then finally I unfold the paper and open it.

"Can you go online now, want to chat with you?" I raise my head to look at him and he nods. Kennedy is driving me crazy, he hasn't reciprocated any of my feeling of crush which I had for him, yet today he is the one asking me to come online so we can talk.

Readily, I log in to my WhatsApp account and send 'hi' to his account. No one would be able to wait if they were in the same situation as me.

He logs in a few seconds after me, the typing notification shows up, I hold my heart in my hands, crossing my fingers and praying it's gonna be the best conversation of my life. Kennedy chatting with you is exactly like the President of the States chatting you up, any girl who has encountered this privilege always has a life-long tale to tell. He is a celebrity among us.

"You like me, right? Sure."

My eyes roam back to him and his lips part slightly, into a not-too obvious grin, a grin you wouldn't easily notice except you take a closer and more steady look at him.

"Yes, I like you." I hastily typed and hit the send button delivering it to him.

"So since this is the last class for the day, can we meet before everyone in front. We need to see and speak with each other." He adds a disturbed emoji, then he talks of us being where everyone can see us. My heart starts to get anxious, if this is what he thinks, then why does he add a disturbed emoji, which seems mocking at the same time.

After the class, he walks abruptly to the podium where our lecturer is teaching from. He waves his hand to the crowd of packing students, they nearly snub him but when they look at who is talking, they all surrender. The hall becomes so quiet, everyone with expectant ears.

"Hello guys and ladies, I would love to call Maya Clinton to come on this podium!" A stern face accompanies, fear starts to grip me at his expression. "Listen to all I have to say, thanks."
