Chapter 2

I drove until the road stopped being mine.

Somewhere past the second mountain pass, the last thread of Ironveil's mind-link went dead in my chest. It didn't hurt the way I expected. It just went quiet — like a room after a fan is switched off, and you only notice the sound because it's gone.

The Silverpine border checkpoint came into view at dawn. Gray light. Pine trees black against a pale sky. Frost crusted along the shoulder of the road. I pulled over next to a low stone marker with a wolf's head carved into the face.

A delegation was already waiting.

I counted them as I stepped out of the car. Six figures. Two warriors flanking. A Beta in a charcoal coat standing one step behind a taller man in dark wool. And the man in dark wool was the one who mattered.

I didn't need anyone to tell me who he was.

He was mid-sentence when I closed the car door. Something about border rotations. His voice was low, deliberate, the kind of voice that didn't rise because it never had to. His Beta was nodding along, pen moving over a clipboard.

Then the wind shifted.

I watched it happen. I watched the sentence stop in his throat. His whole body went still — not the polite stillness of a man being professional, but the frozen stillness of a wolf catching a scent it wasn't prepared to find. His pen hand dropped a fraction of an inch. His dark eyes came up and locked onto mine, and behind them I could see his wolf pushing forward like something surfacing from deep water.

My chest bloomed.

Warm. Unwelcome. A pull under my ribs, quiet and steady, tugging toward him like a compass needle finding north.

No.

I clenched my jaw. My own wolf stirred — she had been half-asleep for hours, exhausted from the ceremony — and now she was lifting her head, ears forward, curious. I pressed her back down.

Sandalwood. Rain. That was his scent. It curled around my throat and my wolf hummed and I hated her a little for it.

The Beta noticed. I saw his eyes flick from his Prince to me and back, saw his brow tighten by a fraction, saw the exact moment he understood what he was watching. He said nothing. His pen didn't move.

The man in wool recovered within seconds. I had to give him that.

He stepped forward. His face resettled into diplomatic composure so smoothly I almost doubted what I'd seen. Almost.

"Ms. Stevens," he said. "Caspian Alexander. Welcome to Silverpine."

He extended his hand. It was steady.

I took it. His palm was warm. My wolf shivered.

"Your Highness." I let go faster than was polite. "I'm here for the advisory position. Nothing else."

His eyes didn't waver. "Understood."

That was all. No push. No comment. No performance of surprise at what I'd said. He turned his shoulder to indicate the road ahead and gestured me toward the black car idling at the checkpoint gate.

"Gideon will take your bags. We'll brief you at the pack house."

I walked past him without looking back. I could feel his gaze on my spine the entire way to the car, and I could feel him choosing not to speak.

The Beta — Gideon — met my eyes as he took my suitcase. His expression was perfectly neutral. But he'd filed it. I knew he'd filed it.

---

The first Silverpine intelligence briefing landed on my desk forty-eight hours later.

I read it in the small office they'd given me on the second floor of the pack house. Coffee in one hand. Barnaby — a golden retriever I'd already decided was staying — asleep across my feet under the desk.

*Ironveil eastern border — coordinated rogue breach, oh-two-hundred hours. Two Ironveil warriors deceased. Section of eastern fencing compromised. Ward signature absent.*

My finger traced the rim of the coffee cup once. Slowly.

Ward signature absent. Of course it was.

I kept reading.

*Within seventy-two hours of the breach, three Ironveil-allied packs have formally severed treaty obligations, citing defensive instability. Additional withdrawal notices anticipated.*

I set the report down. I did not feel triumph. I did not feel grief. I felt the clean, quiet register of a ledger balancing itself.

Five years I'd held that ward. Five years I'd sat across from those allied Alphas and talked them into terms that favored Ironveil. The ink hadn't even dried on some of those treaties.

I wondered how Marcus was holding up. He'd been running on four hours of sleep since the last audit season. He would be running on less now.

I closed the report.

---

It happened that night.

I was in bed. Barnaby was a warm weight against my ankle. The cabin was quiet in the way that only Silverpine's forests could be quiet — deep and layered, wind in pine needles, no city hum underneath.

And something pulsed against the severed edge of my mind.

Not a voice. Not a thought. A raw, agonized pressure, like a fist beating against a locked door from the far side of a canyon. It bounced. It scrabbled. It couldn't find purchase. The bond had been cut clean, and whatever he was throwing at it had nowhere to land.

But I felt the shape of it. The edge of it. A howl, reduced to a tremor at the outer rim of my consciousness.

Elias.

I lay still. My wolf lifted her head. She did not answer.

The pulse came again. Weaker. Then again, weaker still.

Then nothing.

I rolled onto my side. Barnaby shifted against my leg and huffed in his sleep.

I closed my eyes.

I did not dream of him.
