Chapter 4

Because Mark had a fear of motion sickness, George drove as slowly as a snail.

For the first time ever, I was late for work.

How ironic! My boyfriend finally offered to drive me to work, and I ended up being late.

If I had known this would happen, I would have just taken the subway. There goes my perfect attendance bonus for the month.

At the end of the workday, George texted me again, saying he would pick me up.

I quickly replied, "No need, the subway is really convenient for me."

In the past, I used to rush home after work every day, just to make sure I could cook a warm meal for George before he got off work.

Every morning, I would wake up half an hour earlier than him, just to carefully select his outfit for the day.

Not only that, when he worked from home, I played the role of his assistant—organizing his documents, making coffee, arranging his schedule...

But now, I don't want to spend all my time on him anymore.

After all, I'm quite capable at work, and I've sacrificed too many opportunities for him.

Conveniently, my company recently took on a new project, and they needed someone to lead it.

I volunteered, and even the boss praised me for suddenly becoming more ambitious.

That day, I worked late and took a taxi home after having dinner at the office.

When I entered, I found George sitting on the sofa, smoking with a dark expression.

As soon as he saw me, he extinguished his cigarette and questioned me with resentment.

"What's going on? Why are you so late? Do you know I haven't eaten yet?"

I looked at him without any expression.

"What else could I be doing? Working, of course. If you're hungry, why didn't you order takeout?"

"You're getting bold now, aren't you? Is this household lacking your salary, or has your boss lost his mind and decided to make you the big shot?"

Apparently, in George's eyes, I'm only fit to be a low-level employee who barely scrapes by, not someone who can handle big responsibilities. He is not worthy of shouldering such an important responsibility.

He must have forgotten that I once had better options, that I could have earned more than him. But he kept brainwashing me, saying that women working hard outside is too tough, that it's his job to support the family.

So, I gave up the management position my father arranged for me at his company abroad.

I stayed in the country, found a random job, and declined promotions and raises, settling down as a low-level employee for three years.

Now, he has the nerve to mock me. What a shameless jerk!

I couldn't be bothered to argue with him, so I went straight to take a shower.

When I came out, George was eating takeout alone.

He didn't even ask if I had eaten. How selfish he is! How did I not see it before?

I had rushed to finish a proposal at work, but there was a part I wasn't satisfied with.

Seeing that it wasn't too late, I opened my laptop to make some revisions.

George silently walked in and hugged me from behind.

In the past, whenever he initiated intimacy, I would always cooperate.

But tonight, I suddenly felt repulsed by his touch.

I pushed him away.

"Can't you see I'm busy? Don't disturb my work."

With a snap, George angrily closed my laptop.

"Busy, busy, busy—what could you possibly be so busy with? The world won't collapse without your brilliance!"

I turned around and just stared at him quietly, a cold smile forming on my lips.

"Am I busier than you? You mean, besides being a brilliant professional, you still have time to accompany your little assistant, and now you've finally found time to be with me, don't you?"

George's face turned dark, but he was too proud to admit any fault.

"You're insane. I'm done with you!"

After saying that, he walked out expressionlessly.

"George, let's break up."
