Chapter 2

“A day I thought I'd never see,” Leonidas muttered, his eyes fixed coldly on the grand hall ahead.

I clenched my fists beside him, my reflection merging with his in the gleaming glass. A beautiful lie. Everyone here, their armor polished, their silken robes pristine, gathered to witness a wedding soaked in coercion, resentment, and blood.

“Try not to scowl, Elara,” he whispered, mocking. “We wouldn’t want our guests doubting your… devotion.”

Devotion. The word tasted like ash. My throat tightened as I bit back a retort, reminding myself of the people watching—my clan, my elders—each one holding their breath as this union unfolded. The lives of so many hung by the thinnest thread.

“You’ll excuse me if I don’t play the part of the blushing bride,” I hissed.

He smirked, the glint in his eyes cutting deeper than any blade. “You’re already fulfilling your role,” he said, his voice cool, the words carrying an edge sharper than his steel. “The peace you wanted is yours—just as long as you play it right.”

The hall fell into a heavy silence. Eyes, expectant and cold, settled on us. The ceremony had begun. The High Elder took his place, his voice solemn as it echoed across the chamber.

“Today, two bloodlines join as one,” he proclaimed, his hands raised. “An alliance forged to end generations of violence and suffering.”

His words filled the room, Leonidas grasped my hand—hard, unyielding. His touch burned, like fire meeting ice, mocking the chill in the air and the emptiness inside me. I could feel his pulse, steady and ruthless, under his skin.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he murmured low enough for only me to hear. “And yes, Elara, you’ll hate every second.”

I forced my gaze to meet his, cold and unfeeling. He was the man I was bound to now, the man I was trapped with. Every breath I took felt like it was suffocating me under his watchful eyes.

“Do you have any last words of resistance?” he taunted, a cruel smile playing at the corners of his lips.

“Only that you’ll live to regret this,” I shot back, my voice bitter, barely above a whisper.

His grin widened, and in that moment, the High Elder raised his hands. The ancient vows began, heavy with history, bound with fate. I recited them, my voice hollow, my soul ripped with every word.

“With this union, I bind myself to you,” I said, the words dragging themselves from my throat like a wound opening deeper.

The applause that followed felt like a distant echo, as if the sound didn’t belong to me. It blurred around me, every face lost in the fog. I turned my gaze back to Leonidas. He looked satisfied, pleased even.

“Congratulations, wife,” he whispered in my ear, his voice as cold and sharp as the blade he carried. “Your new life begins now.”

“My new life? Or my sentence?” I whispered, my voice steady despite the storm building inside me.

His smile darkened, an unspoken promise in his eyes, something darker, something deadly. “Oh, don’t be mistaken. This is only the beginning.”

The night stretched on, draped in ceremonial dances and whispered conversations. Nobles approached us, each one offering congratulations, their smiles dripping with false sweetness. They came, sizing up this alliance, calculating the next move.

And Leonidas, ever the shadow, watched me like a hawk, his gaze never leaving mine. I felt it—the pressure of his eyes on me, daring me to break, daring me to show even a flicker of weakness. It was a game, a test, and I could feel every beat of it in my bones.

“You’re more stubborn than I gave you credit for,” he murmured as he handed me a glass of wine.

I took it, not sparing him a glance, my eyes locked onto his as I drank, the bitterness of the wine matching the bile rising in my throat.

“Is that admiration I hear?” I asked, my voice laced with sarcasm. “How out of character for you.”

He smiled—false, a carefully crafted mask. “It’s not admiration, Elara. It’s… anticipation.”

The words hung between us like a rope tightening. The darkness in his eyes unsettled me, something far deeper than what I could comprehend.

“You think I’ll break,” I said, my tone steady, but the anger beneath it was raw. “That I’ll cower under your threats?”

He leaned closer, his words brushing against my ear like a whisper of poison. “You misunderstand, Elara,” he said softly. “It’s not fear I want from you.”

My pulse quickened, unease creeping through my veins. “Then what is it, Leonidas? What sick game are you playing?”

He paused, considering, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, almost imperceptibly, he said, “Loyalty.”

I scoffed, the anger I’d been holding back slipping free. “Loyalty? From me? After everything you’ve done?”

His grip tightened around my hand, his face so close now that I could feel his breath against my skin. “Yes. And know this, Elara—any betrayal will be met with blood.”

A cold chill ran down my spine as his words cut into me, as chilling and unforgiving as the winter wind. His gaze never faltered, and I knew he meant every syllable.

“Then perhaps you should start by watching your back,” I replied, my voice unwavering, the defiance settling into the core of my being.

His smirk twisted darker, more dangerous. “Is that a threat, wife?”

“No, merely a reminder,” I said, my words as sharp as a blade.
